Five years ago, Juliet Rothwell dived into the sea after a stranger's sinking car and dragged him out alive. A year later, she married him on paper to keep her late father's dealership out of her cousin's hands. Her family has made Grayson Wilder wash their cars and eat his dinner in the garage ever since. None of them knows the quiet man with the sponge owns Sable, the most coveted car in the world, or that someone ran him off that coast road for it. He stayed hidden for one reason. A chairman's wife is the easiest target on earth. Then two strangers drove off with Juliet in her own Sable, and Grayson stopped the car with a command only the chairman holds. Now a crooked detective wants him in a cell, her cousin is smiling too much, and a man who calls himself the governor has stolen that command and can stop any Sable in the city. Chapter One: The Emergency Line

The Rothwell family made their son-in-law eat his dinner in the garage, beside the cars he washed.

Tonight two men drove off with his wife in a Sable, and every Sable on earth answers to him.

It began the way every dinner began, with Cressida Rothwell at the garage door holding a plate out at arm's length.

"Don't drip on my floor," she said, and went back to her guest before Grayson Wilder could thank her.

He set the plate on the workbench beside a bucket of soapy water and the chamois he'd been using on her Sable. Roast lamb, already cooling. Through the half-open door he could see the long table, the candles and the good silver that only came out when someone mattered.

Tonight that someone was Laurent Bexley. He sat at the head of the table with a leather folder by his elbow and the easy smile of a man who already knew how the evening would end. His family's motor group owned showrooms across the country, and now it wanted Rothwell Motors, the Sable dealership Juliet's late father had built from a single showroom.

"Let's be honest with each other," Laurent said, topping up Cressida's glass himself. "Sable's franchise review is almost here, and your numbers won't survive it. When they pull the badge, you'll own an empty building. I'm offering to buy it while it still has a name on the front."

"It's a generous offer," Hayden said. Juliet's cousin had agreed with everything Laurent said since the soup. "More than generous, Jules. Sign it before dessert and we can all stop pretending."

"Pretending what?" Juliet asked.

Cressida set down her fork. "That your father's business can be saved by a girl with a spreadsheet and a husband who washes cars."

Camille laughed, then covered her mouth as if it had slipped out. She was Juliet's oldest friend, and she had never learned when to stop. "To be fair, he's very good at it. Laurent, at least let Juliet's husband park your car on the way out. He'd do it for free. I'm not sure anyone's ever paid him for anything."

The whole table laughed. In the garage, Grayson picked up his fork and kept eating.

He had heard worse in four years of marriage. From the doorway he could follow every sound in that room, the click of Laurent uncapping his pen, the soft slide of the folder across the tablecloth, the silence that came after.

"I'm not signing," Juliet said.

"Juliet." Her mother's voice dropped ten degrees.

"Dad built that place with his own hands. The review isn't over, and I'm not handing it to anyone because they asked nicely over lamb." A chair scraped back. "I'm going to the dealership. The numbers won't fix themselves."

Grayson expected the front door. Instead her heels crossed the kitchen tiles and she appeared in the garage doorway, still in the green dress she'd worn for a dinner she never wanted, her car keys already in her hand.

She didn't say a word to him. She took the plate out of his hands, turned, and carried it back to the dining room. Through the doorway he watched her set it down on the white tablecloth, directly in front of her mother.

"He eats inside," she said. Then she walked out the front door without looking back at him once.

Nobody touched the plate. After a moment Cressida pushed it an inch away with one finger, and Laurent closed his folder with a polite little smile, like a man with all the time in the world. Grayson picked up the chamois again. It was easier than walking into that room.

Twenty minutes later, his phone buzzed against the workbench. It wasn't a call. It was a red banner he had only ever seen in tests, an alert built for Sable's emergency centre. VEHICLE SOS. DRIVER: JULIET ROTHWELL. Years ago, without telling a soul, he had routed her emergency button so it would never reach a stranger's headset first. It would reach him.

He opened the line and muted his own side before the car's speakers could give her away.

At first there was only road noise and a man's voice, low and bored, saying something about the next turn. Then Juliet, so close to the microphone that her breath crackled.

"Two men," she whispered. "They forced their way in at the lights on Marrow Street and pushed me into the passenger seat. We're on the coast road, going out of the city. Please hurry."

The line went quiet except for the engine. Grayson was already moving. The key hook by the door held one set, Cressida's, on the silver fob she never let him touch without asking. He took it. Her Sable was still wet from his sponge when he reversed it out past Laurent's car in the drive, past the dining room window where Cressida was rising from her chair. He didn't slow down.

At the first red light, he opened an app no Sable customer had ever seen. It had no logo and no menu, only a black screen and a single empty field. He typed a string from memory, the code only one person alive held. The screen changed, and a map unfolded. Eight kilometres ahead on the coast road, a small white marker carried Juliet's plate. He touched the marker and gave it one command.

The marker began to slow. It drifted to the edge of the road, eased onto the shoulder and stopped. Grey text appeared beneath it. ENGINE DISABLED. ALL DOORS LOCKED. EXCEPTION: FRONT PASSENGER. Grayson put his foot down.

The coast road ran black and narrow between the cliffs and the sea. When his headlights finally found her car, it sat dark on the shoulder with its hazards blinking. Juliet stood a few metres away, barefoot, her heels in one hand and her other arm wrapped around herself against the wind. Inside the car, two men were pounding on the glass.

He was out before his engine settled. He shrugged off his jacket and put it around her shoulders, and only then did she seem to realise who he was.

"Grayson?" Her teeth were chattering. "How are you here?"

"Are you hurt?"

"No. I don't think so." She glanced back at the car. "My door locked the second I shut it. Theirs won't open at all. They've been at it for five minutes."

He held the jacket closed at her throat and kept himself between her and the car. The driver had stopped hammering. He was staring at Grayson through the glass, breathing hard.

Then a phone lit up on the dashboard. The screen faced the windscreen, bright in the dark car, and Grayson read it before he could look away. The sender was saved as the Governor.

"A Sable never stops by itself. If it stopped, he's alive, and he's close to her. Find him."
