Chapter 1

The extravagant, spacious family home of Wesley Graham was lit with decorations and lights, illuminating the whole room.

It was Dorcas Graham's birthday today—the family’s matriarch.

She was dressed in her elegant, expensive dress and was looking slightly younger despite her age.

“Grandma, over the years, I have observed that you love fancy things, so I decided to get you a designer bag worth over half a million dollars.”

Dorcas grinned.

Then a young man dressed in a perfect gray suit stepped forward.

“Grandma, as your good soon-to-be son-in-law that I have always been,” Mario Caleb started, “I bought this for you." He put the wrapped box down carefully. "It's jewelry worth over two million dollars.”

Dorcas's grin grew wider.

"Bless you, Mario. You'll truly make a good son-in-law, unlike the piece of trash we already have!"

Just then, out of the blue, Henry Daniel, the eldest son-in-law of the family, spoke, "Grandma, could you lend me four hundred and fifty thousand dollars, please? The nurse just called to say that my mother's condition has worsened and that they need the money to carry out a surgical operation on her. Please, help me, I promise to pay you back.”

The entire family opened their mouths in great astonishment.

They stared at him.

How could Henry be this shameless? Today is Dorcas Graham's birthday, and instead of gifting her, he's seeking to borrow money?

Before anyone could bat an eye….

Pa!

Dorcas raised her hand and slapped Henry fiercely across his face.

"You, bastard!” She growled. "You aren't just useless but unashameable as well!”

Henry clutched his hurting cheek, head lowered in both shame and embarrassment. "Ple—please, Grandma," he stammered, his lips shaking from emotion, “I don't want anything to happen to my mum. She's the only thing I have left in this world.”

A tear formed in his eyes as he pleaded desperately, not minding the slap.

A dark, stormy cloud suddenly appeared beneath Dorcas's eyes as she shot Henry a dangerous stare. She bit her lips furiously, about to respond when—

“Grandma, please, don't take it hard on Henry; he's clearly not thinking straight," Margaret, Henry's wife, hurriedly said on his behalf.

Margaret was considered the beauty goddess of the city, and suitors with wealthy backgrounds didn't cease from coming her way despite her married status. However, she had turned them all down even though the whole family wanted the complete opposite.

Dorcas turned sharply to her. Her expression didn't change. "Just take a look at the piece of trash you've gotten married to! He has been nothing but a leech on us! And I want him kicked out of this house for good!”

Margaret bit her lips nervously. “Henry was only trying to save his dying mother, Grandma.”

"Then he should go and work or perhaps explore other alternatives,” Dorcas replied curtly. “And not come to me!"

At the side, Henry's heart sank. He hadn't been staying idle; he had been applying for different jobs, but hadn't been granted any.

At this moment, Mario Caleb, Shirley's fiancè, Margaret's cousin, the one who had gifted Dorcas the jewelry worth over two million dollars, spoke condescendingly.

"We need a cleaner, a toilet cleaner to be precise, and I'll consider having him employed just for the sake of the Graham's family.”

He turned to face Henry. "Or what do you think, Henry? The pay is huge.”

“Awwnn, that's a generous gesture, Mario!” Shirley, Margaret's cousin, praised her fiancè. “You're so kind!"

Then she turned. "Won't you consider jumping on the offer, huh? Application might close soon. At least, be useful to yourself this once and stop living off my niece.”

Henry swallowed, taking in the obvious humiliations, but chose to ignore them all by not responding.

Dorcas then spoke again, still referring to Margaret. “If you want me to help him, then you must divorce him immediately, and I'll consider paying for his mother's treatment."

Her gaze fixed on Margaret's as she continued. “Agreed?"

Margaret looked at her with disbelief. “No, Grandma, I won't divorce Henry," she replied politely.

Dorcas's nose flared up with rage. “How dare you! What's good about this asshole, even?" She barked.

She was still ranting when Henry, shoulders slumped, face drained of color, finally spoke in a low voice after being silent for a long time, “Margaret, I'll leave for the hospital now to see Mum.”

"How about the payment for her treatment?" Margaret asked, worry and concern laced in her voice.

“Don't know."

“Don't worry, I'll go with you. We might use my card to settle part of it. I've got some money in it," Margaret offered.

“Try any of that, and you're no longer part of this family! You can choose to stay with that miserable bastard for the rest of your life!" Dorcas shouted in an icy manner.

Margaret halted, taken aback by Dorcas's remark. She hadn't anticipated that at all. However, before she could regain herself, Henry had disappeared out of sight.

But as if nature was totally against him today, rain started to drizzle and subsequently began to pour heavily, beating Henry mercilessly as he headed to the hospital.

Soon, he arrived at the hospital, completely drenched and drained.

Ignoring the onlookers’ stares, Henry headed to the cashier department to bargain if the payment for his mother's treatment could possibly be extended; however, he was told by the nurse in charge that the payment had been settled.

“Huh?” Henry raised an eyebrow in shock. "Are you sure of what you're saying? And who's this person?" He asked, the cold that had gripped him instantly vanishing.

“Yes, Mr. Henry, but I have no idea who this person is," the nurse responded.

Henry's face twitched with confusion. How does that even make sense?

Someone paid for his mother's treatment already? Impossible!

He knew no one—no one from the wealthy circle who could possibly help him. The only people he knew were the Grahams, but they had coldly refused to assist him.

Just at that moment….

"Don't worry yourself, young master, I paid for it.”

A voice said from behind.

Chapter 32The moment Henry mentioned Steve's name, the receptionist didn't bother to argue. She knew this restaurant had been sold, and before the original chairman sold it and left, he had introduced a man to them. That man's name was Steve Housel. Vividly remembering that, the receptionist looked at Henry with respect even though she was stumped at first. How could this young man be the new chairman? Then again, Henry was dressed so casually when he walked into the restaurant and had even ordered a meal. Could it be that he was disguising himself? Coming to think of it so closely, the receptionist swallowed—no wonder he had summoned the courage to approach DeSmoker and his men. He was doing his job as the chairman!Flashing a respectful smile across her face, the receptionist bowed her head. “Ah, Sir! You're welcome! We were expecting to see you! Glad you came." Henry smiled back. “Please, come with me, Sir." The receptionist then led Henry to one of a vase room upstairs.

Chapter 31Henry didn't respond. Meanwhile, despite the sharp pain he was experiencing, Jonathan couldn't help but snort after Henry finished his call and returned to the room. “What can a miserable son of a nobody possibly do? He’dbetter anticipate what's coming after him. I pray they do to him much more than they did to me.”Two minutes passed. Then, “Fake call, just as I suspected,” DeSmoker said before barking at his men again. "What are you still waiting for? Break his kneecaps, grab the lady, and let's leave!” Right after his command dropped and his men were about to take action, DeSmoker's phone suddenly buzzed inside his pocket and started to ring. DeSmoker frowned as he reached out for his phone. Looking at the screen, he raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Boss? Why's he calling me now?” he muttered, then raised his hand to stop his men. "Quiet, it's Boss calling." His men halted. DeSmoker answered the call, pressing the phone against his ear. He hardly opened his mouth

Chapter 30Margaret hadn't taken notice of Henry until the moment he asked that question. She turned, and her brows furrowed in surprise.“Henry?" Henry was stunned as he turned to see Margaret right in the restaurant.Margaret walked up to him and asked. "What are you doing here?” Henry frowned; her earlier treatment back at the manor, now flashing through his head, but he kept it cool. “I should be asking you that. Why are you here?"Margaret sighed. "After what happened in the morning, Jonathan decided to treat me to a meal, so we came here on our arrival from the hospital; however,” her eyes burned with anger as they darted toward DeSmoker, "they barged into the room, said he liked me and that I should spend my night with me; when I resisted, they started to drag me away, and when Jonathan intervened, he had his men beat him up.”She halted, pointing at where Jonathan was lying."That's him over there. He's bleeding badly.”When Margaret was finally done, she didn't believe she

Chapter 29The men moved at the speed of light; before Jonathan could blink his eyes just once, one of the men with the beer bottles aimed one of them at Jonathan and smashed it on his head as hard as he could. Crack! The bottle shattered with a high-pitched sound, sending broken glass across the room. Patrons scrambled back. “Ahh!" Jonathan yelped in pain as the bottle exploded on his head, but the man didn't stop there. He lifted the remaining bottle and swung it down at his head again, the latter harder than the previous. Margaret flinched at the scene and involuntarily dropped to her knees in front of DeSmoker, her face filled with fear for Jonathan. "Please, I'll go with you; just tell your men to stop! Please, they might kill him!” She let out a cry; she clasped her hands together in front of her as she interceded for Jonathan. However, DeSmoker's expression was cold as he glanced down at her. “That's his punishment for acting so arrogant earlier. But as for you, you're st

Chapter 28All gazes moved toward the direction. The men dragging Margaret away suddenly paused. DeSmoker slowly turned. Jonathan shot up onto his feet, his eyes red. He might have been afraid of these men earlier, but watching them try to take Margaret away was something he couldn't stand to watch happen. His face tightened.Margaret looked at him with visible surprise on her face. Even though she knew Jonathan still wanted her so badly, she hadn't expected him to stand up for her like he was doing, not against these kinds of men. Striding forward, Jonathan pointed his finger at DeSmoker, his voice trembling with fury. “DeSmoker, or whatever your name is, I don't care to know, but she said she's not interested in you, and you can't force her!" DeSmoker's men exchanged surprised glances before looking at their Boss. How dare this man talk to their Boss like that? Their faces turned dark. "How dare you talk to DeSmoker with that kind of tone?”One with two beer bottles marched

Chapter 27Steve cleared his throat. “Young master, the thing here is, Golden Crest was covertly planning to sell the business because the owner could no longer afford the rising cost of keeping it afloat, so rather than allowing his years of hard work to collapse under mounting debts, he decided it would be better to sell it to someone with enough resources to revive and expand the business. Therefore, I felt it would be best to purchase it for you since it's a popular and fast-growing business.”What?Henry staggered slightly, feeling a shock wave surge through him. “You did what?" His eyes widened in great surprise, as if he had just heard him wrong.Steve nodded. "Yes, young master. I bought it for you as one of your future assets. The legal ownership transfer documents for you being the new chairman of the restaurant have been finalized already, so since you're coincidentally in one of your assets, I want you to get the required papers signed before leaving.”Henry shook his he
