CHAPTER 1: THE ANNIVERSARY
Alexander learned how invisible a man could become while standing at a sink full of dirty dishes.
Cold water ran over his hands as he scrubbed plates that did not belong to him in a house that never truly felt like his. Soap bubbles slid down his wrists. Behind him, laughter floated from the living room. The servants were watching television, and no one asked if he needed help. A plate slipped from the counter and shattered near his feet. One of the maids glanced over, then quickly turned away as if she had seen nothing. He crouched and picked up the broken pieces himself. For three years, that was how long he had lived here as Aurelia's husband. Three years as the live-in son-in-law everyone politely greeted and secretly pitied, but he had only five days left now. The agreement would end soon. He rinsed the final plate and placed it neatly beside the others. His reflection stared back at him from the metal sink, an ordinary face, calm eyes, nothing worth remembering. That is exactly how he preferred it. If people knew who he really was, this quiet life would disappear overnight. He dried his hands and carried Aurelia's clothes to the basin. Hand-washing. She never had time for it. He did. He worked through each piece carefully, the way he did everything in this house, quietly and without complaint. When he was done, he hung them to dry and moved to the kitchen. Aurelia worked harder than anyone he knew. She chased success like she was afraid to slow down. Even when stomach pain bent her over in silence, she still went to work the next morning. That was why he stepped away from the company. Aurelia Cosmetics was named after her, and they founded it together after graduation. He invested the first million dollars that gave it life, but she became its face, its driving force, and watching her succeed felt like enough. He finished the last of the preparations and checked the time. It was 6:40 PM. A small smile appeared before he could stop it. Tonight mattered to him. It was their third anniversary. Downstairs, the dining room glowed with candlelight. He had spent the afternoon preparing everything himself. Her favorite dishes filled the table and warm light softened the quiet space. Two gifts rested at the center. A silver contract folder and an unlimited black card. Inside the folder was the partnership agreement Aurelia had been chasing for nearly a year. Harbr International. The industry leader. She believed that this opportunity was still out of reach. She did not know he had already secured it. He checked his phone, but there were no messages from her. He called her. She answered quickly, but her voice sounded distracted. "Yes?" "Are you still at work?" he asked. "Mm. I'm busy tonight, a lot is going on." Voices and movement filtered through the line, the busy noise of a crowd somewhere. He hesitated. He wanted to say happy anniversary but instead he said, "Don't work too late." She sighed softly, not sounding angry but just tired. "If it's not important, don't call, okay? I'm overwhelmed," she said. The call ended. On the other side of the city, Aurelia was not at the office. She was standing in the open drop-off area outside the airport, holding a welcome banner with both hands, her hair slightly damp from the heat. Beside her, Vivian was watching her with the particular expression of someone who had a lot to say and was deciding how much of it to actually say. "So," Vivian started, tilting her head slowly. "A woman who complains about getting a tan if she checks the mailbox is standing outside in the afternoon heat. Holding a banner. After lying to her husband about working overtime." She paused. "Is it embarrassing to admit you came all this way to pick up your first love?" Aurelia's face went red so fast it was almost impressive. "It's a business relationship," she said firmly. "Stop reading into things." "Right." Vivian pulled out her phone and pretended to be very interested in the screen. "A business relationship. With a handmade welcome banner." Aurelia ignored her. She had come in the black Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss, a limited edition coupe of which only one hundred existed anywhere in the world. Money alone could not get you one. Alexander had spent three weeks arranging it for her using connections she did not know he had. She believed she had gotten it herself. He had never told her otherwise. "What are you doing tonight?" Vivian asked. "Dinner. I booked Stellar Grand." Vivian lowered her phone. "The whole hotel?" "The banquet hall. I reserved it three months ago. Family elders are coming, a few business contacts." A short silence. "Aurelia," Vivian said carefully. "Your wedding reception was at a nice restaurant. You booked a hotel banquet hall for his first night back." "That is completely different." "Is it?" "A husband and a first love are two completely different things, Vivian." Vivian opened her mouth, looked at Aurelia's expression, and closed it again. Then Nahir appeared through the arrivals gate, luggage trailing behind him, sunglasses pushed up on his head, easy and unhurried the way he always was, like the world had been quietly rearranging itself to make his entrance smooth. Aurelia moved before she fully decided to. She crossed the distance quickly, took the small towel from her bag, and gently pressed it against the sweat on his forehead. Then she held out her water bottle. Her own, already half-drunk. He took it without hesitating. "You came yourself," he said, looking at the banner with a small smile. "Don't make it a big deal," she said. Vivian, standing three steps back, quietly raised her phone and took a photo. She looked at it for a second. They were standing close together in the afternoon light, Aurelia looking up at him with something open in her face, Nahir looking down at her the way someone looks at something they had been thinking about for a long time. They really did look good together. She put her phone in her pocket and said nothing. Back at the villa, Alexander was sitting at the table with the untouched dinner in front of him and the candles burning lower. He had been telling himself since the call ended that she was busy. She was always busy. This was not new. Since college, she had run at a speed that left everyone around her slightly breathless. He had learned to wait instead. He was good at waiting. He looked at the empty chair across from him. Her grandfather had asked for three years. He had given three years. He had held up his end of every part of this arrangement, quietly, without complaint, and whatever he had expected to feel at the end of it, this particular kind of waiting had not been it. He was still sitting there when his phone rang. It was Jake. He answered. "What happened?" "Boss, there's trouble," Jake said quickly. "The Black Dragon Gang is causing trouble and plans to smash up Stellar Grand Hotel." Alexander straightened. "They chose that hotel?" "Yeah. Their boss claims he can handle any consequences." He frowned. Stellar Grand was more than an investment. It was territory under his protection. No criminal group should have dared touch it unless they wanted to test him. He glanced once more at the untouched dinner table. Aurelia would not be home anytime soon. He grabbed his jacket and left quietly. He walked out and closed the door behind him. The cool night air cleared his thoughts as he rode his motorcycle through the city. He had no idea where the night was about to take him.Expand

The Outcast Son-In-Law: Rise From Ashes CHAPTER 24: REKINDLED FLAMES
That night, the apartment was quiet except for the soft hum of the air conditioner. Aurelia had decided not to leave. Instead, she used every trick she knew to close the distance between them. She moved with slow, deliberate grace, touching his arm, leaning close, and whispering words she knew would stir old memories. She had always possessed a great figure, and after nearly three years of marriage, Alexander knew every curve, every sensitive spot, and every way she liked to be touched. At first, he tried to resist. The pain from the past few weeks still lingered in his chest. But Aurelia was persistent. She kissed his neck gently, ran her fingers through his hair, and pressed her body against his in ways that made it hard for him to think clearly. The familiar scent of her perfume, the softness of her skin, and the way she looked at him with both desire and regret slowly broke down his defenses.Eventually, the walls he had built crumbled. They spent a long, pleasant night together.

The Outcast Son-In-Law: Rise From Ashes CHAPTER 23: UNWELCOME GUESTS
The next morning, Alexander was drinking water when the doorbell rang. He opened the door and found Aurelia and Nahir Virel standing outside.Aurelia spoke first. “We came to apologize.”Alexander’s face remained cold. “There’s no need. Leave.”Aurelia frowned. “Alexander, don’t be so petty. It was Nahir’s welcome dinner that got interrupted. Even he doesn’t mind, so why can’t you just let it go?”Alexander’s anger rose. “So I’m the one who interrupted your happy little moment? Our wedding wasn’t even as grand as the welcome dinner you threw for him.”Aurelia pouted. “But he just came back from abroad. A guest is a guest.”Alexander’s voice grew sharper. “Then why did you drink on his behalf? You have a low tolerance for alcohol, yet you still drank for another man. When people said you two make a perfect couple, you didn’t even refute it. What exactly am I to you? A husband is a husband, and a boyfriend is a boyfriend?”The more he spoke, the angrier he became. Memories from the past

Before heading home, Alexander stopped by the supermarket near the residential complex. He walked through the brightly lit aisles, picking out fresh vegetables, tender meat, rice, and a few spices. Today had been a long and eventful day, but it ended on a surprisingly good note. He had finally managed to find a job for the first time in his life he had personally gone out to interview and work for someone else. The result turned out pretty well. Feeling a rare sense of accomplishment, he decided to reward himself with a proper home-cooked meal.Back at the apartment, he tied on an apron and began cooking. The rhythmic sounds of chopping and the sizzling in the pan brought him unexpected calm after the chaos of the day. Her nose twitched as she caught the delicious smell. She couldn’t take her eyes off

The Outcast Son-In-Law: Rise From Ashes CHAPTER 21: THE HELP-WANTED SIGN
Alexander crouched down and gently helped the injured owner to his feet. The older man was still shaking, his forehead covered in blood from repeatedly slamming it against the floor. His breathing was shallow and painful from the blows Brother Scar had delivered with the steel rebar.“You need to go to the hospital,” Alexander said firmly, supporting the man’s weight with one arm.Mr. Chen shook his head weakly. “No… no hospital. I’m used to this kind of thing. I’ve been running this gym for over twenty years. I have medicine at home and know how to take care of myself. I’ll be okay.”Alexander frowned but didn’t push further. He could see the pride in the older man’s eyes, the kind of stubborn dignity that refused to show weakness even after being humiliated and beaten. He helped Mr. Chen sit on the folding chair he had brought out earlier and checked the worst of the injuries. The cuts on his forehead were messy but not dangerously deep. The bruises on his side would hurt for week
