Daniel stared at Michael, struggling to take in what the lawyer had just said. Someone in the building was secretly reporting their meetings to Victor Okafor, the uncle who had run the family business while Daniel struggled to pay his bills.

"Are you telling me my uncle knows I am here?"

Michael nodded slowly. "I believe he does. I cannot say who is giving him information, so we must be careful about what we discuss and whom we trust."

Daniel leaned back and looked at the documents on the desk. He had come for answers about his grandfather, but he was beginning to see that the inheritance was only part of a much bigger problem.

"Then start from the beginning. Who was my grandfather, and what exactly did he leave me?"

Michael opened the folder and turned the first page towards him. "Chief Emmanuel Okafor founded the Okafor Empire more than thirty years ago. It began as a small trading business and grew into a company with interests in property, construction, transport, manufacturing and technology. By the time he retired, it was one of the most valuable privately owned businesses in the country."

Daniel listened in silence. He knew very little about his father's family. His father had died when he was young, and the few relatives who remained never spoke about business.

"Your grandfather wanted you to grow up without depending on his wealth," Michael continued. "He believed money changes the way people treat you. He wanted you to learn the value of hard work before you inherited anything."

Daniel shook his head. "Then why did he disappear? He asked me to hide my name, and then he was gone. I spent years wondering why my family had so little. If he wanted me to learn hard work, he could have told me the truth."

"You have every reason to feel that way," Michael said. "He knew his decision might hurt you. He believed keeping you away from the business was the safest choice. I cannot defend everything he did, but I can show you what he left behind."

He pointed to a list of companies. Daniel recognised none of the names, but the figures beside them made him look twice: office buildings, shopping centres, factories, transport companies, land in several cities and shares in other businesses.

"All of this belongs to the Okafor Empire?"

"Yes. Based on the latest independent valuation, the empire is worth several billion dollars, although the final figure depends on its debts, market conditions and a financial review."

Daniel slowly put down the papers. For years he had counted every naira before buying food, worrying about rent, searching for better work, while an empire had existed under his family name.

"Do I own everything now?"

"Not immediately. The will names you sole heir, but the transfer must follow legal process. You will need to verify the documents and complete the required procedures before taking control."

Michael then took a sealed envelope from the folder, stamped in dark blue with the Okafor emblem. "Your grandfather left you a personal letter. I was to give it to you only after explaining the inheritance."

Daniel opened it carefully. The handwriting on the thick cream paper matched an old birthday card his grandfather had once sent him. He began to read.

My dear Daniel,

If you are reading this, I have left this world, and it is time you learned the truth. I know you may feel betrayed. I will not ask you to forgive me without understanding why I chose as I did.

I wanted you to stand on your own feet, even when the world refused to help you. Wealth opens doors, but it also attracts people who pretend to love you while they wait to destroy you.

The Okafor Empire is yours to inherit, but do not mistake ownership for victory. Some within the company have forgotten what it was built for. Some have stolen from it. Others have waited patiently to take everything.

Trust evidence more than promises, and never let anger make your decisions. There is one person you must watch carefully. He has the Okafor name and has stood beside our family for years, but do not assume that blood makes a man loyal.

Use what you inherit to protect those who cannot protect themselves.

Your grandfather,

Emmanuel Okafor

Daniel read it twice. By the last line his hands were shaking.

"Is he talking about Victor?"

Michael hesitated. "He does not name anyone, and I will not accuse a man without proof. But your uncle has managed the company's daily business for years, and some transactions do not match the reports submitted to the board."

"How much is missing?"

"We do not know. The first review found several suspicious transfers, but the accounts are complicated. We need an independent investigation."

Anger rose in Daniel, but he remembered the warning. "If my uncle has been stealing, I want him investigated. I do not care how powerful he is."

"I understand, but be patient. If we move too quickly, the people involved may destroy evidence or move the money. Suspicion is not proof."

Daniel agreed, though it was hard to accept that his own family might have betrayed his grandfather. Michael handed him a black card with the Okafor emblem printed in gold.

"A temporary ID. It will get you into the first board meeting once your legal position is verified. Until then, make no public claims about the inheritance."

Daniel studied it. Seeing his name beneath the emblem, he felt connected to his grandfather's empire for the first time.

"What happens next?"

"We verify everything legally, then prepare you for the board. Some of those people have worked there for years. They will question your experience, your authority and your right to lead."

Daniel thought of how Beatrice and Adrian had treated him the night before. If strangers could humiliate him for being poor, how would people behave once they learned he had inherited billions? He stood and tucked the letter into his jacket.

"I do not expect a warm welcome. I only want the truth, and to know what my grandfather expected of me."

Michael rose too. "There is one more thing before you go."

Daniel stopped at the door.

"Your uncle has called my office three times this morning asking whether you have received the will. He has demanded an emergency board meeting tomorrow. I believe he means to challenge your right to the company before you can take your seat."

Daniel looked at the card in his hand. Only hours ago, his wife's family had called him worthless. Now he faced a powerful uncle who would do anything to keep him from his inheritance. He had no experience running a billion-dollar company, and wealth alone would not protect him. But he had one advantage: his enemies had underestimated him for three years. He slipped the card into his pocket, determined not to let them make that mistake again.

As he left the building, his phone rang. It was Amara.

"Daniel, where are you? My mother says Adrian phoned her. He claimed you are pretending to be the heir to a rich family, and that you might be involved in something dangerous. She wants me to come home immediately."

Adrian already knew about the meeting. Before Daniel could answer, fear filled her voice.

"Please tell me the truth. I do not understand what is happening."

"Amara, I will explain everything. But promise me you will not trust anything Adrian says."

There was a brief silence. Then she whispered, "Daniel, I think he is already on his way here."

  • The Woman Who Should Be Dead

Daniel stood motionless in the living room, staring at his phone as if the woman might call back if he waited long enough. Her voice had sounded weak but familiar, and her words refused to leave his mind. Amara watched him with growing concern."What happened? Who called?"He slowly lowered the phone. "She said her name was Grace. She said she knew what happened to my grandfather. When I asked who she was, she said she was the person he believed was dead."Amara covered her mouth. "Do you think it was your mother?""I do not know what to think anymore."Daniel had spent years accepting that his mother was gone. He remembered the day his relatives gathered around him and explained that he would never see her again. He remembered crying until he fell asleep, and his grandfather holding him and promising he would always be protected. Now every memory seemed to hold a question he had never thought to ask.Michael arrived within half an hour. He studied the number and tried calling it, but

  • The Secret About His Mother

Daniel stared at Samuel as if he had spoken another language. His mother had died when he was a child, and he had lived for years with the memory of losing her. Now Samuel was saying she had been trusted with a secret that could change everything he believed about his family."What do you mean my mother had the ledger?" he demanded. "She died years ago. How could my grandfather have given her anything?"Samuel gripped his arm. "I know how this sounds. But your mother knew more about the Okafor family than you were ever told. Your grandfather trusted her because she was the only person who questioned his decisions without wanting anything from his wealth."Before Daniel could ask more, the two men from the black car came closer. One was tall and broad-shouldered. The other had a scar running from his left cheek to the edge of his jaw."Mr Adeyemi," the tall man called, "you have caused enough trouble. Come with us and nobody needs to get hurt."Samuel stepped behind Daniel. "Do not lis

  • Adrian's Hidden Connection

Daniel could hardly believe what he was seeing. The name on Zara's document was clear. Adrian Cole, the wealthy man who had insulted him and tried to turn Amara against him, was tied to the suspicious transactions at the Okafor Group."Could this be a trap?" Daniel asked Michael as they left the café. "Adrian may have placed his name there to make us suspect him.""That is possible," Michael replied. "We must verify the records before drawing conclusions. I do remember hearing that Adrian's family did business with your uncle years ago, but I never knew it went beyond ordinary dealings."Daniel stopped at the kerb. "Why would Adrian want money from my grandfather's company when his family is already wealthy?""People with money often want more, especially when they think they will not be caught. But we should not assume greed is his only reason."Daniel put the document inside his jacket. He had meant to spend the day preparing for Samuel, but Zara had changed everything. If Adrian wa

  • The Man Behind The Ledger

Daniel did not sleep for the rest of the night. He sat on the edge of his bed with the phone in his hand, rereading the last message from Michael's number. He had no way of knowing whether the lawyer was safe or whether someone else held his phone. Every minute made him more anxious, but he knew that rushing into the street without a plan could deliver him straight to his enemies. At six in the morning he called again. The phone rang several times before a man answered."Who is this?" Daniel demanded. After a pause, a familiar voice replied. "Daniel, it is me."Relief washed over him. "Michael, where have you been? I thought something had happened to you.""Something nearly did. I was followed last night and had to switch off my phone and hide. I am using another line now. Tell me, did you receive a message from my number?""Yes. It told me not to go to the railway station."Michael was silent for a moment. "I did not send it."Daniel heard him breathe out. "Someone does not want you

  • A Meeting In The Dark

Daniel read the message for the third time, hoping he had misunderstood it. The words had not changed. Someone knew he had found Samuel Adeyemi's notebook, and that person was determined to stop him from meeting the missing witness. He looked across the living room at Michael, who had come to the apartment shortly after Daniel's call."Someone must be watching us," Daniel said. "They knew what we found in Samuel's office, and they know about tomorrow's meeting."Michael adjusted his glasses and studied the screen. "Then Samuel may be in greater danger than we thought. And we cannot assume the railway station is safe.""Then we cancel.""If Samuel is the only person who can explain what happened to your grandfather's original documents, cancelling gives our enemies more time to find him. We must go, but carefully."Daniel walked to the window. People were returning from work, and the streetlights were coming on. Everything outside looked normal, yet he could no longer trust it. A man w

  • The Missing Witness

Daniel stood beside the dining table with the phoneagainst his ear. The witness to his grandfather's final will had been missing for three days, and the document that could name that person had been stolen. He could no longer believe in coincidence."Michael, do you know who the witness is?""I know the name, but I must check it against the original records first. Your grandfather had me keep some details confidential until the inheritance process began, and the missing document held information that is not in the ordinary copy of the will.""Why did you not tell me earlier?""Because I only learned this evening that the witness was missing. The number on file had been disconnected, and nobody at the person's former office knows where they have gone."Daniel walked to the window. The street was quiet, and most of the neighbouring lights had gone out. He wondered whether the sender of the threatening message was watching his apartment. "Send me the name as soon as you confirm it.""I
