The Mysterious Lawyer

Daniel stood beside the road for several minutes after the call ended, staring at the unknown number. His grandfather, Chief Emmanuel Okafor, was supposed to have died many years ago, yet a lawyer had just told him the old man had passed away only three days earlier and left him an empire worth billions.

He could not understand why anyone would hide such a truth. If his grandfather had been alive all those years, he had never once visited. He had watched Daniel struggle with money, live in a small apartment and endure the insults of his wife's family. And why reveal himself only after death?

He called Amara twice without an answer, so he put his phone away and walked towards the main road to find a taxi. As he walked, he kept remembering her face when her mother ordered him out. He had never asked her to choose between him and her family. He had only wanted her beside him when people treated him unfairly.

It was almost ten o'clock when he reached the apartment. He unlocked the door quietly. The living room was dark except for the small bulb above the kitchen door. Amara's handbag lay on the sofa with her shoes beside it.

"Amara?"

"Is that you, Daniel?" she called from the bedroom.

"Yes, I am home."

She came out with red eyes and a tired face, her jewellery removed and a simple nightdress replacing the red dress. "I am sorry about what happened at the party. I should not have allowed things to go that far."

Daniel looked at her for a moment. "Why did you wait until we got home to say that? You saw how your mother treated me. You heard Adrian. I stood there as your husband, and you made me feel like a stranger."

Amara lowered her eyes. "I know, and I am not proud of it. My mother has always wanted me to marry a wealthy man. Whenever I disagree with her, she threatens to stop supporting me and tells everyone I have disappointed her."

Daniel sat down and rubbed his forehead. "I never asked you to fight her. I only wanted you to tell her I deserve respect, even without the money she wants."

She sat beside him, though she seemed afraid to look at him directly. "I know you have tried your best. But I worry about our future. We have bills to pay, and I want us to have a better life without always asking my parents for help."

Daniel understood. Money had caused many arguments between them, and he had often wondered whether the marriage would survive if nothing changed. He was not ready to tell her everything until he knew whether the lawyer was honest, but he could not stay silent.

"Things might change soon," he said. "I received a strange call tonight from a man who said he was my grandfather's lawyer. He spoke about an inheritance."

Amara frowned. "Your grandfather? I thought he died long ago."

"So did I. The lawyer says he was alive all these years and left me a business empire."

She stared at him. "Daniel, are you serious?"

"I do not know yet. He wants me to meet him tomorrow morning."

She was quiet for a while. "I hope it is not a trick. Many people pretend to be lawyers to steal money. Be careful who you trust."

"I will ask to see the documents and have everything explained before I decide anything."

Amara rested her head against the sofa and closed her eyes, relieved that he had not been carried away by the promise of sudden wealth. Daniel said no more that night. He showered and lay down beside her, but sleep would not come. Who had his grandfather really been? Why had he hidden his identity? What had happened three days ago? And who was trying to stop Daniel from learning the truth?

The next morning he woke before six and dressed in a clean white shirt and dark trousers. He wrote down the questions he wanted to ask and put the paper in his pocket. Amara was still in bed.

"Where are you going so early?" she asked sleepily.

"To meet the lawyer."

"Call me when you arrive, and do not sign anything until you have read it carefully."

He smiled faintly. "I promise."

The taxi took him to a large office building in the business district. At reception, a woman greeted him politely.

"I am here to see Mr Michael. He asked me to come this morning."

She checked her computer. "He is expecting you, Mr Okafor. Take the lift to the twelfth floor, where his assistant will meet you."

As the lift doors closed, Daniel felt his nerves rise. He was about to learn whether everything he knew about his past had been a lie.

On the twelfth floor, a young man in a grey suit approached him. "Mr Daniel Okafor? I am Peter. Please follow me."

Peter led him down a quiet corridor and opened the door to a large office. A middle-aged man with neatly combed grey hair stood behind a wooden desk, holding a thick brown folder.

"Mr Daniel," he said, extending his hand, "it is good to finally meet you."

Daniel shook it and sat down. "Before we begin, I want everything explained clearly. Who was my grandfather? Why did he hide from me? Why would someone want to stop me from learning the truth?"

Michael set the folder on the desk. "You have every right to ask. But I must warn you that the answers may change everything you believe about your family."

He opened the folder and took out an old photograph. Daniel leaned forward. It showed a much younger version of the grandfather he remembered from childhood, standing among several wealthy businessmen. One of them Daniel recognised at once: Victor Okafor, his father's brother.

"Why is my uncle standing beside my grandfather?" he asked.

"Your uncle has known the truth for many years," Michael said. "In fact, he is the person who has been controlling the empire you are about to inherit."

A chill ran through Daniel's body. "Then why did he let me live like this?"

Michael looked him in the eye. "Your grandfather believed the only way to protect you was to keep you away from the family business. Unfortunately, that decision may have given your uncle enough time to take control of everything."

He pushed another document across the desk. Daniel saw his full name printed at the top. Beneath it, a statement confirmed that his grandfather had named him sole heir to the Okafor Empire, subject to the conditions set out in the will. For the first time, Daniel began to suspect that the poverty he had endured was connected to a much larger family secret.

"Mr Daniel," Michael said, "before you decide whether to accept this inheritance, you need to know something else. Your uncle has already been told you are coming."

Daniel looked up sharply. "How is that possible?"

Michael closed the folder.

"Someone in this building has been reporting our meetings to him."

  • The Woman Who Should Be Dead

Daniel stood motionless in the living room, staring at his phone as if the woman might call back if he waited long enough. Her voice had sounded weak but familiar, and her words refused to leave his mind. Amara watched him with growing concern."What happened? Who called?"He slowly lowered the phone. "She said her name was Grace. She said she knew what happened to my grandfather. When I asked who she was, she said she was the person he believed was dead."Amara covered her mouth. "Do you think it was your mother?""I do not know what to think anymore."Daniel had spent years accepting that his mother was gone. He remembered the day his relatives gathered around him and explained that he would never see her again. He remembered crying until he fell asleep, and his grandfather holding him and promising he would always be protected. Now every memory seemed to hold a question he had never thought to ask.Michael arrived within half an hour. He studied the number and tried calling it, but

  • The Secret About His Mother

Daniel stared at Samuel as if he had spoken another language. His mother had died when he was a child, and he had lived for years with the memory of losing her. Now Samuel was saying she had been trusted with a secret that could change everything he believed about his family."What do you mean my mother had the ledger?" he demanded. "She died years ago. How could my grandfather have given her anything?"Samuel gripped his arm. "I know how this sounds. But your mother knew more about the Okafor family than you were ever told. Your grandfather trusted her because she was the only person who questioned his decisions without wanting anything from his wealth."Before Daniel could ask more, the two men from the black car came closer. One was tall and broad-shouldered. The other had a scar running from his left cheek to the edge of his jaw."Mr Adeyemi," the tall man called, "you have caused enough trouble. Come with us and nobody needs to get hurt."Samuel stepped behind Daniel. "Do not lis

  • Adrian's Hidden Connection

Daniel could hardly believe what he was seeing. The name on Zara's document was clear. Adrian Cole, the wealthy man who had insulted him and tried to turn Amara against him, was tied to the suspicious transactions at the Okafor Group."Could this be a trap?" Daniel asked Michael as they left the café. "Adrian may have placed his name there to make us suspect him.""That is possible," Michael replied. "We must verify the records before drawing conclusions. I do remember hearing that Adrian's family did business with your uncle years ago, but I never knew it went beyond ordinary dealings."Daniel stopped at the kerb. "Why would Adrian want money from my grandfather's company when his family is already wealthy?""People with money often want more, especially when they think they will not be caught. But we should not assume greed is his only reason."Daniel put the document inside his jacket. He had meant to spend the day preparing for Samuel, but Zara had changed everything. If Adrian wa

  • The Man Behind The Ledger

Daniel did not sleep for the rest of the night. He sat on the edge of his bed with the phone in his hand, rereading the last message from Michael's number. He had no way of knowing whether the lawyer was safe or whether someone else held his phone. Every minute made him more anxious, but he knew that rushing into the street without a plan could deliver him straight to his enemies. At six in the morning he called again. The phone rang several times before a man answered."Who is this?" Daniel demanded. After a pause, a familiar voice replied. "Daniel, it is me."Relief washed over him. "Michael, where have you been? I thought something had happened to you.""Something nearly did. I was followed last night and had to switch off my phone and hide. I am using another line now. Tell me, did you receive a message from my number?""Yes. It told me not to go to the railway station."Michael was silent for a moment. "I did not send it."Daniel heard him breathe out. "Someone does not want you

  • A Meeting In The Dark

Daniel read the message for the third time, hoping he had misunderstood it. The words had not changed. Someone knew he had found Samuel Adeyemi's notebook, and that person was determined to stop him from meeting the missing witness. He looked across the living room at Michael, who had come to the apartment shortly after Daniel's call."Someone must be watching us," Daniel said. "They knew what we found in Samuel's office, and they know about tomorrow's meeting."Michael adjusted his glasses and studied the screen. "Then Samuel may be in greater danger than we thought. And we cannot assume the railway station is safe.""Then we cancel.""If Samuel is the only person who can explain what happened to your grandfather's original documents, cancelling gives our enemies more time to find him. We must go, but carefully."Daniel walked to the window. People were returning from work, and the streetlights were coming on. Everything outside looked normal, yet he could no longer trust it. A man w

  • The Missing Witness

Daniel stood beside the dining table with the phoneagainst his ear. The witness to his grandfather's final will had been missing for three days, and the document that could name that person had been stolen. He could no longer believe in coincidence."Michael, do you know who the witness is?""I know the name, but I must check it against the original records first. Your grandfather had me keep some details confidential until the inheritance process began, and the missing document held information that is not in the ordinary copy of the will.""Why did you not tell me earlier?""Because I only learned this evening that the witness was missing. The number on file had been disconnected, and nobody at the person's former office knows where they have gone."Daniel walked to the window. The street was quiet, and most of the neighbouring lights had gone out. He wondered whether the sender of the threatening message was watching his apartment. "Send me the name as soon as you confirm it.""I
