The service tunnel was dark and narrow, the air thick with the scent of oil and rust. Kael leaned against the wall, catching his breath as he studied the woman who had just saved his life. Jyn was young—probably in her early twenties with sharp features and a confident smirk that didn’t quite match the tension in her eyes.
“Who are you?” Kael asked again, his voice low.
Jyn shrugged, leaning casually against the opposite wall. “I told you. Jyn. And before you ask, no, I’m not with the Corps. I’m more of a….. free agent.”
Kael narrowed his eyes. “Why did you help me?”
“Let’s just say I have a vested interest in that little toy you’re carrying,” Jyn said, nodding toward the terminal in Kael’s pack. “The Quantum Ascendant Protocol isn’t something you want to leave in the Corps’ hands.”
Kael’s grip tightened on the strap of his pack. “What do you know about it?”
Jyn’s smirk faded, replaced by a look of seriousness. “Enough to know it’s dangerous. And enough to know you’re in way over your head.”
Before Kael could respond, the sound of boots echoed through the tunnel. The Shadow Operative was still out there, and they weren’t alone.
“We need to move,” Jyn said, pushing off the wall. “Follow me.”
Kael hesitated for a moment, then nodded. He didn’t trust Jyn, but he didn’t have many options. They moved quickly through the tunnel, Jyn leading the way with the confidence of someone who knew the spire’s layout by heart.
After a few minutes, they reached a hidden door that led to an abandoned storage room. Jyn tapped a code into the keypad, and the door slid open with a hiss. Inside, the room was filled with old tech and dusty crates, but it was relatively safefor now.
Kael set the terminal on a nearby crate and activated it. The screen flickered to life, displaying the encrypted file. “Zara said it would take a few hours to decrypt this. Do you have the tools to speed that up?”
Jyn raised an eyebrow. “You’ve been to the Void Market? And you met Zara? Impressive.”
“Focus,” Kael snapped. “Can you help me or not?”
Jyn grinned and pulled a small device from her pocket. It was a sleek, black decryption module, far more advanced than anything Kael had seen before. “Let’s see what we’re dealing with.”
She connected the module to the terminal, and the screen lit up with lines of code. Kael watched intently as the decryption process began.
“So,” Jyn said, breaking the silence. “What’s your plan once we crack this thing?”
Kael frowned. “I don’t know yet. But if the Corps is this desperate to keep it hidden, it must be important.”
Jyn nodded. “Important enough to get us both killed. But hey, that’s part of the fun, right?”
Kael didn’t respond. His mind was racing with possibilities. The Quantum Ascendant Protocol, the Architect’s legacy, the URS’s glitches it all had to be connected. But how?
The terminal beeped, and the screen displayed a new message:
“Decryption Complete. Accessing File: Architect’s Gambit.”Kael’s heart skipped a beat. He leaned closer as the file opened, revealing a holographic projection of a massive, intricate structure a space station unlike anything he’d ever seen.
“What is that?” Jyn asked, her voice filled with awe.
Kael studied the projection, his mind racing. The station was shaped like a double helix, with glowing nodes along its length. At its center was a massive, pulsating core.
“It’s the Nexus,” Kael said, his voice barely above a whisper. “The heart of the URS. And according to this, the Quantum Ascendant Protocol is the key to controlling it.”
Jyn whistled softly. “Well, that explains why the Corps wants it so badly. But why would the Architect leave something like this hidden? And why now?”
Kael didn’t have an answer. But as he stared at the holographic projection, a single thought burned in his mind: The Architect’s legacy is the key. And I’m the only one who can unlock it.

No official name. Just Site Zero.”Jyn muttered. “That’s comforting.”Kael’s voice was steady. “What’s buried there?”The man’s human eye darkened. “The first ones.”Kael frowned. “The first what?”The man turned to them, his expression unreadable. “The first soldiers of the Universal Ranking System.”A silence fell
