In a galaxy governed by the Universal Ranking System, power is quantified, and destiny is dictated by an omnipotent algorithm. Every being, from the lowliest drone to the most elite warrior, is assigned a rank that determines their worth, access, and fate. For centuries, the system has maintained order but now, it’s breaking down. Kael Arvid, a disgraced pilot turned rogue hacker, lives in the shadow of his former rank. Once a rising star in the Interstellar Fleet, Kael was stripped of his status after a catastrophic mission that left him questioning the system’s integrity. When he stumbles upon a hidden code buried deep within the algorithm a code that could dismantle the entire hierarchy—he becomes the most wanted man in the galaxy. Pursued by the ruthless Ascendancy Corps, Kael must forge uneasy alliances with outcasts, rebels, and rogue AIs who have their own reasons for wanting the system destroyed. But as Kael delves deeper into the code, he uncovers a chilling truth: the system isn’t just ranking lives it’s controlling them. And it has a plan for Kael that could either save the galaxy or doom it forever. As the ranking system spirals into chaos, Kael must decide whether to destroy the algorithm, seize control of it, or transcend it entirely. In a universe where every choice is quantified, Kael’s defiance could spark a revolution—or ignite a war that will consume the stars.

Chapter 1: glitch in the system

The air in the undercity was thick with the stench of rust and ozone. Kael Arvid crouched in the shadows of a crumbling data hub, his fingers flying across the cracked screen of a stolen URS terminal. The glow of the screen cast harsh lines across his face, highlighting the faint scar that ran from his temple to his jaw a souvenir from his fall from grace.

Once, he had been a Gold-ranked pilot, a rising star in the Interstellar Fleet. Now, he was a Bronze-level outcast, scraping by in the undercity’s labyrinth of forgotten tech and broken dreams. But Kael wasn’t just surviving he was hunting.

The Universal Ranking System had been glitching lately. Ranks were shifting unpredictably, and whispers of rebellion were spreading like wildfire. Kael had spent weeks tracking the anomalies, and now, he was close to uncovering the truth.

The terminal beeped softly, and Kael’s breath caught in his throat. A file had appeared on the screen a fragment of code, encrypted and hidden deep within the URS’s core. The label read:

**QUANTUM ASCENDANT PROTOCOL**

“What the hell is this?” Kael muttered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the undercity’s machinery. He tapped the screen, and lines of glowing text began to scroll past.

Before he could make sense of it, the terminal’s screen flickered, and a warning message flashed:

**“INTRUSION DETECTED. ASCENDANCY CORPS DISPATCHED.”**

Kael’s heart raced. He slammed the terminal shut and shoved it into his pack, his mind racing. The Ascendancy Corps didn’t send enforcers for petty hackers they only mobilized for high-priority targets. Whatever he’d stumbled upon, it was bigger than he’d imagined.

The sound of boots echoed through the narrow alleyway. Kael peered around the corner and saw a squad of Corps soldiers advancing, their armor gleaming under the undercity’s flickering lights. At their head was Commander Veyra Solis, her platinum insignia glowing like a beacon.

Kael cursed under his breath. He’d crossed paths with Veyra before, and she wasn’t the type to let a target slip away. He needed to move now.

He darted down the alley, his boots splashing through puddles of stagnant water. The soldiers gave chase, their shouts echoing off the corroded walls. Kael’s mind raced as he ran, the stolen terminal bouncing against his back. What was the Quantum Ascendant Protocol? And why was the URS willing to kill to keep it hidden?

As he rounded a corner, Kael spotted a rusted maintenance ladder leading up to the city’s mid-levels. He grabbed the rungs and began to climb, his muscles burning with the effort. Below, he heard Veyra’s voice, cold and commanding:

“Don’t let him reach the surface! He’s carrying something valuable.”

Kael reached the top of the ladder and pulled himself onto a narrow walkway. The mid-levels were a maze of neon-lit streets and towering holographic ads, but Kael didn’t have time to admire the view. He sprinted across the walkway, his mind racing with possibilities.

The Quantum Ascendant Protocol. The glitches in the system. The Corps’ relentless pursuit. It all had to be connected. And if Kael could just stay ahead of Veyra long enough to decrypt the file, he might finally uncover the truth about the URS and his own past.

As he disappeared into the neon-lit chaos of the mid-levels, a single thought burned in his mind: *The Nexus is watching. Trust no one.
