It was the seventieth birthday party of Cecilia Meyers, the matriarch of the Meyers family. It was a big party and a lot of people who were invited to the party took this chance to show off their wealth, in order to impress her.

The party was full of life, drinks and laughter, snacks and gossips, Clarissa and Brian Meyers had huge smiles on their faces as they chatted lightly with people, being the main hosts of the party, they had to oversee each happenings and activities. They looked like the perfect society couple, being that there were a aristocrats attending the party, they used this opportunity to show off Malia, their daughter who was a beauty.

Well…Malia being Malia felt so full of herself, she looked around the room and upon not seeing the person that she least wanted to see, she had a huge smile on her face, which caused most of the men present to be entranced by her beauty.

She was indeed a beauty, the red gown she was putting on had a long train at the back, it hugged her figure greatly.

She was an actual model to every lady who was attending the party and a real sight for the men to behold. The ladies fawned around her, giving compliments each minutes to get in her good side. All this while she was busy enjoying herself, she never suspected that anything could go wrong.

A man was pinned to her side, he grinned as praises on how he and Malia looked like the perfect couple were repeated by anyone’s they came across, no one cared enough to remember that Malia was married to someone else.

Wow” there were whispers amongst the guests “who is the man on Malia’s side?”

“They look so perfect together like they were made for each other.”

“This is definitely a match made in heaven.”

“I don’t recognize him but I would give anything to gain his attention.”

The celebrant, Cecilia Meyers was sitting on a chair reserved for her, the greetings, gifts and best wishes directed towards her didn’t go unnoticed by her. “Malia,” She suddenly called her granddaughter, who whispered something to the man besides her before leaving him.

“Grandma.” Malia held her grandmother’s hand with a coquettish smile on her face.

“Good child, I don’t see that your annoying husband somewhere, I’m glad he didn’t show up to jinx my birthday party.”

A frown instantly appeared on Malia’s face. “Grandma, can we not talk about him? He is so useless and couldn’t get a gift for grandma.”

“Do not mind that loser, instead, what do you think of Rafael?” Cecelia threw a glance at the man that had stuck to the side of her granddaughter all evening.

Malia blushed before looking away. “I think he is okay, Grandma.”

“He is both handsome and very rich. A perfect match for my granddaughter,” Cecilia let’s out a pained sigh. “ I wish he appeared a few years earlier, you wouldn’t have to be married to that loser with nothing to his name.”

All of a sudden, the loud chatters suddenly stopped, the laughter ceased, for a moment Malia feared that something bad had gone wrong but instead….

Rhys walked in, looking all disheveled with bloodstains on his clothes, he ignored the strange looks he received as he walked towards where Malia and her grandmother were. “I wish you a happy birthday, grandmother.” He presented the gift box he was holding with a smile on his face.

Malia hissed, shock flashed in her eyes but it instantly disappeared. “Why are you here? Why do you look dirty? Are you trying to anger grandma?”

Rhys still had a smile on his face as he responded. “No way. I was involved in an accident on my way here, I instantly hurried over here so I didn’t have the time to change.”

There was the look of disdain in the eyes of Clarissa as she hurried over, pushing Rhys to the side. “Mother-” Rhys had just said this before he was silenced with a slap.

“How can you be so useless? Look at yourself, can you compare to the people around here?” Clarissa glared at him openly. Currently, everyone else present stared at Rhys with disdain, like he was an ill fated person, a jinx.

“Aunt, you shouldn’t get yourself worked up over some useless-”

“And who are you to speak?” Rhys addressed the man who has approached Clarissa.

“Won’t you be quiet!” Malia glared at Rhys, she walked towards Rafael sporting a smile on her face. “You should be careful not to offend anyone here.” Rafael held onto Malia’s waist possessively, smirking at Rhys.

“Do not forget that you are married, Malia.” Rhys had a frown on his face, he didn’t want to cause a scene.

“It was an arranged marriage loser,” Rafael taunted him. “We both know that you stole Malia from me, you robbed her from making her choice. It would be better to right that wrong before it’s too late.”

“What gift did you get for grandma? Why don’t you let us see?” Malia smiled sweetly at Rhys, her mind was conflicted but she doesn’t let it show.

“It’s an antique pen.”

“Ha! You got a pen for your grandmother?” Rafael burst into laughter. “How then are you able to take care of Malia? Oops I forgot you are poor-”

Rhys lost it and threw a punch at Rafael’s face, Malia slapped Rhys in return. “How dare you? Get out from here! Get lost, I don’t ever want to see you again, better still sign the divorce papers.”

“Your grandfather-”

Malia interrupted him. “I don’t care! I need my freedom.”

Rhys clenched his fist, he glanced at everyone that was present, his eyes were cold and unfeeling. “I would divorce you but you all would definitely regret this.” He walked away, with his head held high.
