Chapter 9

The moment the Ladies of Helen stormed out of the gym, the atmosphere twisted. Every head in the room tilted toward Jared with a blend of disbelief, annoyance, and outright confusion.

Whispers started like sparks… then spread into a full wildfire.

“Did he really reject Shelly?”

“He must be crazy.”

“Bro thinks he’s Invincible Man because of $25 million.”

“Isn’t this the same guy whose girlfriend dumped him yesterday?”

“And Lisa isn’t even half as pretty as Shelly. What the hell is wrong with him?”

The murmurs thickened with judgment, jealousy, and mockery. Some people looked at Jared like he was mentally unstable. Some like he was arrogant. Others like he was simply too foolish to understand the blessing he had just spat on.

But Jared didn’t care at all.

He simply continued his workout, switching machines, his breaths steady, his posture calm. Sweat slid down his arms and neck, and he adjusted the weights without acknowledging a single person around him.

The more silent he remained, the louder they whispered.

That was how crowds were. Desperate for drama. Desperate to judge. But powerless to touch a man who knew exactly who he was.

Minutes passed before Angela reappeared, smirking as though she had been waiting for the perfect moment to return.

“So,” she said, crossing her arms, “why did you turn down Shelly? Something wrong with your head?”

Jared didn’t break his rhythm. “It’s none of your business.”

Angela flinched at the bluntness. “Wow. Pride. Arrogance. That’s what will destroy you, Jared. You think that because the Joackins might pay you $25 million, you’re suddenly on top of the world? You think you’re better than Shelly Adams? Jared, that girl comes from a billionaire family. You’re from nothing.”

Jared finally slowed the machine and turned to her with a look so calm it irritated her soul. “I don’t care who her family is.”

Angela scoffed loudly. “Of course you don’t. Because you’ve lost your senses. A few hours ago you were begging me for jobs, and now you act like you’re King Jared the First.”

Jared didn’t answer. He simply changed machines.

Angela wasn’t done. She stared at him long and hard, trying to make sense of what had happened. This wasn’t adding up in her head.

This guy prayed for crumbs yesterday.

Yesterday, she could steal 40% of his income and he would thank her for it because he didn’t want to lose the opportunity.

So why was he talking like this now? Why didn’t he bow to Shelly like every other man? Why was he so confident in his words?

Dozens of questions ran across her mind.

But then she smirked again—because she realized Shelly had left. The coast was clear. And she finally had the chance to punish Jared without anyone stepping in.

She walked up to him and, before he could react, reached over and pressed the stop button on the machine he was using.

The equipment shut down.

Jared exhaled slowly. “Why did you do that?”

Angela folded her arms triumphantly. “Because you’re not a registered member of this gym. You can’t use our equipment unless you’re on a plan. So maybe go find a playground or a field somewhere. Something that fits your level.”

Jared stared at her for a moment… then chuckled lightly. The sound of it made Angela’s eyebrow twitch in irritation.

“Fine,” he said. “Let’s register then. I’ll become a member now.”

Angela burst into laughter. “With what money? You think we’ll put you on a tab? Jared, you’re still broke. That $25 million hasn’t even landed yet.”

Jared smiled. “Lead the way to the desk.”

The confidence in his tone made Angela pause for a moment. But then she smirked again. She smelled an opportunity to humiliate him. Publicly. Brutally.

“Sure,” she said. “Come with me. And don’t worry—Shelly isn’t here to save you this time.”

Jared ignored her and walked behind her toward the reception desk.

The receptionist looked up as they approached, already wearing a mocking smile. Angela leaned down and whispered something to her, and the receptionist rolled her eyes at Jared.

Angela snapped her fingers. “Give him the price list. Let him see reality.”

The receptionist handed Jared a laminated sheet. He scanned it casually.

Star Plan – $20,000/month.

 Titan Plan – $50,000/month.

 Platinum Elite Plan – $100,000/month.

Angela and the receptionist stared at him like wolves waiting for a rabbit to wander into their jaws.

“That’s the list,” Angela said sweetly. “Which plan can your broke self afford?”

The receptionist added with a snort, “Honestly, why are we even doing this? Everyone knows Jared can’t afford even the cheapest option. He’d have to scrub toilets for sixteen hours a day for a whole year to get the Star Plan.”

Angela smirked. “Don’t worry. This is exactly what I want. I’m just waiting for the moment he embarrasses himself. Then I’m calling security. They’ll drag him out and teach him a lesson for the disrespect.”

The receptionist smiled in agreement. “Brilliant plan, Angela.”

Jared stared at the list like someone reading a children’s menu. Then he sighed dramatically, shaking his head.

Angela and the receptionist exchanged looks and burst into laughter.

“Reality settling in?” the receptionist asked mockingly.

“This gym is not for people like you,” Angela added. “Go back to begging for jobs.”

Jared smiled faintly. “I want the Patron Plan.”

Both women froze.

“WHAT?” they said in unison.

Jared placed the price list on the desk. “I said I want the Patron Plan.”

The receptionist laughed so hard she nearly fell off her chair. “The Patron Plan is not for students! It’s for people with net worth over $500 million! Even the Joackins can’t join—it’s above their level. The Ladies of Helen only got in because their parents paid for them!”

Angela cackled. “Do you know how ridiculous you sound? Jared, the Patron Plan costs—”

“Twenty-five million dollars yearly,” Jared finished for her calmly.

The receptionist blinked.

Angela blinked.

Jared continued, “So check me in for that plan.”

Angela slammed her hand on the desk. “Are you stupid?! You’re just going to spend all the Joackins’ money on a gym subscription? For what? To pretend you’re rich?”

Jared shrugged. “Let me handle my foolishness. Do your job.”

Angela’s jaw shook with anger. “You think you’re smart, huh? The Joackins haven’t even paid you yet. And we don’t do ‘pay later’ for the Patron Plan.” She turned to the receptionist proudly. “Tell him!”

Before the receptionist could speak, she leaned closer to whisper something into Angela’s ear.

Angela’s eyes widened… then relief washed over her face.

“Ohhh…” she said slowly. “Right. I almost forgot.”

She turned back to Jared with a triumphant smile.

“One small detail: you need proof of funds or a direct corporate endorsement before you can even speak to the director.” Her tone dripped with satisfaction. “Meaning—you don’t qualify.”

Jared tilted his head slightly. “Then take me to your director. I’m not dealing with you or the receptionist. Your level can’t authorize my plan anyway.”

Both women froze.

“You—” Angela pointed at him in disbelief. “You think you can talk like that to me? To us?!”

“You’re the gym’s supervisor,” Jared said calmly. “You’re not qualified to sell the Patron Plan. So take me to someone who is.”

Angela trembled with fury.

The receptionist stiffened, staring at Jared like he had gone insane.

Angela leaned forward and hissed, “Fine. Let’s go to the director. And I swear, when she laughs in your face, I’ll make sure security throws you out myself.”

“Lead the way,” Jared said.

Angela spun around and marched toward the hallway, heels clicking aggressively.

The receptionist muttered under her breath, “This will be fun.”

Jared followed behind them, hands in his pockets, steps relaxed.

Jared spent the rest of the afternoon at the university gym, needing somewhere to burn off the steam boiling inside him. The chaos of the morning—the downfall of Professor Bernard, the shock of Director Hill’s surrender, the roaring crowd—had left a tension in his chest that only physical exertion could dissolve. He had once come here every day, not to train but to wipe equipment, scrub mats, and take whatever degrading tasks Angela could cook up just so he could earn enough to eat. But today, he was here for himself. No more scrubbing machines. No more dusting lockers. No more bowing his head.He was Jared Diamond again. Heir to trillions. Owner of holdings that stretched across states. A man who, with one phone call, could freeze or collapse almost any business in the city. Nobody on this campus knew it yet—but they would. He had been running on the treadmill for almost thirty-five minutes, drenched in sweat. His breathing was steady and relaxed. Chaos was already brewing around the lunch lounge before Director Hill even arrived. Kirby, convinced that she was about to witness Jared’s final downfall, flicked her hair sharply and turned to her friends.“Start recording,” she ordered. “I want every moment caught on camera. When the director gets here, we will show him that this criminal snuck his way back into the school.”Her friends obeyed immediately, pulling out their phones like paparazzi waiting for a star’s meltdown. Professor Bernard, energized by the attention, puffed out his chest and raised his voice.“Everyone gather around!” he barked. “A student is about to face consequences for defying the rules of this university!”In seconds, hundreds of students flooded the space—whispers, gasps, and curious glances filling the room. Some came because they despised Jared, but many came because they felt something was wrong with the way he had been expelled. Still, nobody dared challenge the system openly.Brad and Becky watched
