"Mary."

Edward’s voice was hoarse, cracking under the weight of betrayal.

Mary glanced past him and into the apartment—one look was enough.

Her face darkened, her lips curling in disgust.

"So you found out. Good. Saves us the trouble."

She waved her hand like swatting away a fly.

"You and Susan should get divorced immediately. Frankly, everyone’s been saying you should’ve been kicked out of the Carey family a long time ago."

Mary's words pierced his already broken heart like arrows, one after another.

"Does Dyson agree too?" Edward couldn't help but ask.

His father-in-law, Dyson Carey, got along well with him.

Mary let out a mocking laugh.

"Dyson? It doesn't matter what that old man thinks. This is bigger than him now.”

“Once the MC&Dickens Group finalizes their partnership with the Morgans, the entire Carey family will rise. He can’t stop it."

With a disdainful look at Edward, she twisted her bulky waist and walked into the house like a proud hen.

Edward said nothing more. The indifference of Susan and Mary left him completely desolate.

... ...

At night, Edward staggered through the empty streets, the bottle of alcohol in his hand now had been empty, too.

Alcohol could numb his nerves, help him momentarily forget his troubles.

But at the same time, it made him lose his vigilance.

Edward was unaware of the danger that was quietly approaching.

"Boss, the client this afternoon was really generous!"

"Stop nagging, follow him closely, wait for a chance."

"Boss, he just turned into an alley."

"Hurry up, finish him off there!"

... ...

"Who... who are you?"

The pain in his body made Edward slightly more sober. Struggling to sit up against the wall, he looked at the three individuals before him.

In the moonlight, he could make out some details of these three people.

Two of them looked like insignificant street thugs, while the leader held a gun, posing a significant threat.

As none of them replied, Edward felt uneasy.

Perhaps they were not robbers.

Could it be for revenge? But he had always been kind and never made enemies...

No! William! William Michael!

"Did William Michael hire you guys to kill me? If you want to kill me, please let me know the truth." Edward pleaded humbly, his tone nervous and even fearful.

But he grabbed a handful of gravel from the ground with his right hand quietly.

There was a moment of silence.

"Heh..."

A light chuckle broke the silence of the night.

The leader spoke, "One hundred thousand dollars for a drunkard's limbs, you're quite valuable."

As he spoke, he kicked Edward's body with his foot.

"Don't worry, it will be quick! We won't take your life. But your limbs won't be spared."

"Tom, Jerry, catch him, don't let him move." The leader ordered.

Completely sober, Edward's inner danger alarm rang loudly, urging him to counterattack quickly.

But he forcibly suppressed his nervousness and fear. He couldn't act rashly; he needed to seize the opportunity to escape.

Bang!

Just then, a noise came from a nearby trash can, startling all three men to stop simultaneously.

"Who's there?"

The opportunity has come!

Edward immediately threw the gravel in his hand at the three men, then scrambled away towards the end of the alley without looking back.

Passing by the trash can, he noticed a white cat staring at him intently.

Thank you, little kitty!

Reacting swiftly, the three men chased after him, shouting angrily, but found Edward ahead getting closer and closer to the exit of the alley.

Seeing their “target” slipping away, the leader stopped, pulled out the gun from his pocket.

Aim! Shoot! Both in quick succession!

"Help! Help!" Edward shouted as he rushed towards the street.

He knew that once he made it to the public, he would be safe.

However...

Bang!

A gunshot rang out.

What, can’t I drop by? I am your landlord, you know.”She gave him a teasing wink, like this was the most natural thing in the world.Edward chuckled, but his eyes flicked to Catherine, who was standing stiffly behind her boss, looking like she wanted to disappear into the floor.Jessica caught the glance and let out a quiet sigh.“About this morning…” Her voice turned serious.“My friend—my subordinate—was out of line. I’ve already scolded her for it, but I felt she owed you a proper apology. That’s why we’re here.”Edward raised an eyebrow.
