Chapter 7:

Elias looked thrown aback by the question. His mind goes blank as he opened his mouth to speak. However, Aurelius immediately cut in before he could answer.

“Chairman Zhao gifted it to us yesterday.”

The attendant frowned. “That’s impossible. This suit was personally custom made six months ago, there is only one in Kairen City and it belongs to Young Master Wei.”

Everyone looked towards the commotion. It seems the Chen family will never get a single second of rest before running into trouble.

Elias’ jaw clenched tightly as anger coursed through his veins.

“Are you accusing me of stealing?! You have no proof!”

The attendant didn’t reply immediately. He closed the distance between them both and showed everyone the markings on the left sleeve.

Boldly written there was R.W—Riven Wei.

Elias’ face went red with shame instantly. His mind flew to when Riven had accused him of wearing his clothes, turns out the punk was telling the truth after all.

“How did it come to your possession, Mr. Chen?”

Elias pursed his lips. He didn’t know what to say at all. This wasn’t possible. His eyes flew to where Riven and Odessa stood, watching the ordeal.

His jaw grinded against each other. Riven must have sew his initials into this suit when no one was looking and he definitely bribed this attendant as well.

Yes, that must be it!

“Elias, explain yourself!” Old Lady Chen commanded.

Elias sneered softly. Even his grandmother wouldn’t stand up for him, she had abandoned him to protect the family’s reputation.

“He bribed you didn’t he?” Elias said with a knowing smirk.

The attendant frowned slightly. “What do you mean?”

“He definitely bribed you to stop me and he must have sewed his initials into the suit when no one was looking and have you stand here to prove that he’s right!” Elias repeated maliciously. “Look at him, even if he’s the Wei heir, he’s living off past glory! He has absolutely nothing to his name. What did he even offer you for your help?!”

The attendant’s face went red at the accusation.

“Mr. Chen,” he said coldly. “I have served the Zhao family for almost all my life and I wouldn’t jeopardise myself for this.”

He looked towards Riven.

“Master Wei, this suit belongs to you. Should I have him remove it immediately?”

Everyone turned to Riven while Elias stiffened at the side.

Riven glanced at Elias for a beat before responding. “Forget it. He seems rather fond of wearing my clothes and since he likes them so much, let him keep wearing them.”

“You..!”

Elias’ face went crimson.

“And who do we have here?” A voice spoke from the crowd.

The guests gave way as Valentin Gao and an older man walked towards the Chen family.

“Still clinging to Ms. Chen I suppose,” Valentin said with a sneer, disgust written all over his face.

He turned towards the older man beside him and gestured towards Riven.

“Grandpa, this was the man who fabricated lies about me and had the media house carry them out,” he narrowed his eyes on Riven. “How he was able to do that so quickly I have no idea and he also claims to be the Wei’s heir.”

“Master Gao, a pleasure to meet with you once again,” Old Lady Chen greeted with a patronising smile.

“Old Lady Chen,” Master Gao responded curtly. “I hear that this man here is your son-in-law.”

Old Lady Chen’s smile instantly disappeared and was replaced with a frown.

“It was an unfortunate incident and it’s all my granddaughter’s fault, Master Gao. Whatever trouble they have caused, the Chen family has nothing to do with it.”

Master Gao studied Riven lazily with a raised brow, he let out a cold snort.

“So this is the man who claims to be the Wei’s heir?”

He shook his head slowly.

“Valentin, you have truly disappointed me.”

Valentin blinked with confusion. “Grandpa?—“

“The grandson of a tiger shouldn’t waste his time quarreling with stray dogs.”

Valentin regained his composure, his face breaking into a smirk.

“Grandpa, I told you that he was nothing special. Just someone who climbed out of the trash,” he walked closer towards Riven. “Yesterday you relied on rumors to humiliate me. Today, you are hiding behind the Chen family. Isn’t your life pathetic?”

Riven didn’t seem affected by Valentin’s words. He stared at him calmly.

“It seems you didn’t learn your lesson.”

“You!” Valentin almost exploded with rage.

“Young man, you claim to be the Wei’s heir,” Master Gao said with a little curiosity. “Who can verify your identity? What right do you have to say you belong to stand among the six great families?”

“I don’t owe you any explanation,” Riven responded blankly.

Master Gao instantly became irritated. “Nonsense! The truly capable never fear to prove themselves. This is pure arrogance!”

Valentin glanced at Odessa. “Ms. Chen, have you considered that you have married a man who can’t even prove who he is?”

Odessa pursed her lips slightly looking at Riven.

Alyssa sneered loudly at the side. “Of course, she wouldn’t say anything. Odessa is hell-bent on destroying this family!”

Master Gao straightened his shoulders, his face cold and icy.

“Young man, since you insist that you’re the Wei’s heir, I have no business with that. But humiliating my family is one thing I will not tolerate,” he began. “Kneel and apologize to my grandson, slap yourself ten times and I will pretend none of this ever happened.”

“Hehe, you better kneel. My grandfather is being generous now, and not everyone gets to see him being generous,” Valentin said with a vicious smirk.

“You’re not qualified,” Riven replied.

The banquet hall instantly went silent.

“Odessa, tell your husband to kneel. If he wants to bring us down with him, I will disown you both!” Old Lady Chen sounded.

Odessa tugged on Riven’s hand. She knew how influential Master Gao was.

“Riven… just apologize once.”

Riven quietly removed her hand. “I have done nothing wrong.”

“Young man, I am running out of patience here,” Master Gao seethed.

Riven looked towards him, expression devoid of emotion.

“Did you look into whether the news was true or false?” He raised a subtle brow. “Enabling your grandson will destroy your family one day.”

Master Gao’s eyes widened, his nose flaring from rage.

“How dare you?!”

He stepped closer towards Riven about to put him in place but his eyes spotted the mark on the side of his neck.

His face instantly went pale, his knees going weak that they almost gave out.

“I told you grandpa. He is uncouth and he deserves to rot in jail!” Valentin exclaimed. “For speaking to my grandfather that way, you are definitely courting death!”

SMACK!

A hard, loud slap echoed in the hall. Valentin’s head flew to the side as blood dripped from the corner of his mouth, a red handprint glaring on his skin.

Master Gao’s lips trembled.

“That… that mark!” His pupils shank violently, he took one step backwards. “You…”

THUD!

Before anyone could blink, Master Gao fell to his knees.

“Master, forgive me!”
