Shen Wuyin dipped his head briefly. His mind rummaged through Yun Li’s memories searching for a possible connection Yun Li might have with the old man.

But found none.

The old man glanced at the dead bodies of the brothers briefly, before returning his gaze to Shen Wuyin.

“Your combat skills are impressive.” The old man said, a small smile pressed on his lips.

Shen Wuyin lifted a brow before tilting his head slightly.

“Who are you?”

“Oh, my bad.” The old man muttered. He took a step back, sun rays dazzled in his pupils. “I am Luo Yuyan, leader and founder of the Baiyun Sect.”

A fragment of Yun Li’s memory flooded Shen Wuyin’s mind.

The Baiyun Sect was one of the most formidable sects in the eastern region, acclaimed for their impeccable healing techniques and combat techniques. Unlike the Tiaxun Sect they weren’t feared, but their praises were sung like a mantra.

Shen Wuyin stared at him for a few seconds. “What brings you to the Ashen Sky Clan?” He asked his voice firm.

The old man's smile deepened. “I was invited to for the treatment of Qin Rou.” He responded.

Qin Rou.

A fragment of Yun Li’s memory played in his mind.

Qin Rou was the head of the Ashen Sky Clan. For half a decade, he was diagnosed with Withering Meridian Syndrome.

“Then I suppose you are an Alchemist.” Shen Wuyin said.

The old man nodded.

“Then why are you here?” Shen Wuyin lowered his head and picked up the coin bags. “In the woods?”

The old man snorted. “I was at the main market moments ago…I saw how you thrashed the sellers. And was returning from the main market when I saw you going after a shadow.” He said.

Shen Wuyin stared blankly at him. A sect leader standing before me with so much interest in his eyes, he thought.

“Techniques are viable, but a cultivator with combat skills is invaluable.” The old man's eyes glimmered softly. "I've watched countless geniuses over the years. Yet none moved the way you did.”

“The Ashen Sky is a waste land for skills like yours.” He added. “As the leader and founder of the Baiyun Sect, I formally invite you to join our sect.” Luo Yuyan pressed his fist together and dipped his head slightly.

Shen Wuyin’s brows knitted. He watched Luo Yuyan for a moment longer, his mind wandered through the possible benefits of joining the Baiyun Sect.

He is right, Shen Wuyin thought, the Ashen Sky Clan is truly a wasteland. The so-called high grade cultivators here are toddlers in adult pants, he scoffed.

Luo Yuyan lifted his head.

“You don’t need to worry so much, Son.” A small smile curved on his lips. “Your family is also welcome to my sect.”

Shen Wuyin straightened his posture, before he could process a thought, Luo Yuyan interjected.

“As my invitee, I’ll cater for your family. On arriving, treatment will start for your mother.” He said, and rested a hand over Shen Wuyin’s shoulder. “So you don’t need to worry.”

Shen Wuyin raised a brow. “How did you know about her illness?”

Luo Yuyan smirked. “You might be the poorest in all of Ashen Sky, but you certainly are the most famous.” He scoffed.

Right. Bad news spreads faster than good ones, Shen Wuyin thought.

“After seeing your moves at the market, I asked a few about you.” Luo Yuyan said.

Luo Yuyan placed a hand on his shoulder. “Think about my offer.” He said calmly before turning away.

“And when I do, how do I reach you?” Shen Wuyin asked.

Luo Yuyan paused mid-step. He lifted his hand slightly into the air. A golden brown scroll tied with a purple ribbon materialized into his grip.

Without turning back, he flicked his wrist, tossing the scroll toward Shen Wuyin.

Shen Wuyin caught it effortlessly.

“That’s my invitation, show it to the guards at the border.” Luo Yuyan said, before walking away.

Opening the scroll, Shen Wuyin stared at the writing in it.

“Luo Yuyan’s private guest.” It read. A phoenix symbol rested on the side.

Luo Yuyan’s words replayed in his mind.

Making his way out of the woods, he approached Bai Xue.

Her eyes dazzled as they fixed on the coin bags.

“oh thank goodness…” She gasped, her voice cracking.

A few of the onlookers stood beside her, their jaws slackened as they watched Shen Wuyin.

“No way…”

“He defeated them?”

“This can’t be possible.”

On reaching Bai Xue, Shen Wuyin dropped the bags before her.

She didn’t hesitate. She grabbed the bags and took a step back.

“At least you’re useful.” She snorted before walking away, giggling like a child.

“The amount of ingrates in this clan needs to be studied.” Shen Wuyin scoffed.

Looking around, his gaze fell on his grocery bags beside a tree nearby.

He walked over and grabbed them, before heading home.

The onlookers watched him disappear into the far end of the street, their lips remained parted, their brows knitted.

“Yun Li defeated the Shadow thieves?”

On arriving home, Shen Wuyin unpacked the groceries.

“Brother, how did you get so much money?” Qing asked, her brows furrowed as she glanced over the

Vegetables. Rice. Meat. And a few more.

Those were food items they haven’t had in ages.

“I got the money from exchanging useful information to Tianji Hall.” Shen Wuyin responded.

Mei stroked her chin repeatedly.

“What kind of information could you have possibly given to obtain this amount of money?”

A small laugh escaped Shen Wuyin as he watched her.

She asks so many questions for a child her age, he thought.

“What’s funny?” She pouted.

“Nothing is.” Shen Wuyin scoffed. “Give me a helping hand.”

Mei shook her head and moved to assist him.

“Yun Li?” His mother called out, her voice barely above a whisper.

Shen Wuyin turned to her.

“Yes ma?”

“Come sit with me.” She said,

Shen Wuyin rushed over to her.

Crouching beside her, she took his hands in hers.

“Yun,” She began, her lips trembling with each word. “Whatever you do, do it right. No matter what the world says….” A dried cough tore from her throat. Blood began trickling from her nostril.

Shen Wuyin wiped the blood quickly with his fingers.

Mei rushed over with a cup of water and handed it to Shen Wuyin.

Raising his mother’s head slightly, he lifted the cup to her lips.

The Samsara Dispelling Art could reverse the poison effect on her, but it would crumble her soul, he thought, compassion flickering his gaze as he watched her.

After a few sips, she continued speaking.

“Fight for what is yours and do it wholeheartedly.”

Shen Wuyin nodded and smiled softly. “Please take rest, I’ll arrange your meal.”

He set a pillow at her back and put her to lean on the wall.

“Luo Yuyan.” He muttered under his breath. “She needs urgent treatment and only he can make that happen now.”

As they sat down to eat, Shen Wuyin cleared his throat and broke the news.

“What!”

“Baiyun Sect?”

“Yun, why so sudden?”

“I was invited by the elder Luo Yuyan earlier.” Shen Wuyin responded.

Mei and Qing’s eyes widened. “You were invited by the sect leader?”

Shen Wuyin nodded.

“Mother, this is a great opportunity for us.” He said. “Finally we get to leave this clan.”

His mother remained quiet for a moment, before nodding slightly.

He took out the scroll and showed them.

“For Luo Yuyan to invite you into his sect, then truly, Yun you’ve got what it takes.” His mother said.

Shen Wuyin took her hand in his, while patting her hair with his free hand.

“I’d arrange for a carriage, we’ll leave by morning.”

Outside,

A tree's branch extended over the house, casting an enormous shadow.

"The Samsara God king reincarnated with half his abilities?" A thunderous voice scoffed. Despite the intensity of its voice, no one could hear it.

"How disappointing."

"His vessel is weaker than I expected.”

Why wasn’t I informed about it?” Lin Xue lowered himself beside Luo Yuyan, his gaze locked on the ground as though it held the answer. “His mother is Xiao Lengyue, one of the merchants at the main market.” Luo Yuyan glared at him for a second, sending shivers down Lin Xue’s spine. “He is only here for a visit,” Lin Xue said quickly. “He asked to participate in the Meet, nothing more…” “To show off,” Luo Yuyan cut in sharply.
