Karyl freed her arms from his grip. "Don't get ahead of yourself, Reeds. Do both of us a favour and leave. You have nothing to prove to me."

"No, let's humour him," Zayn Raymond said, appearing before them with his glass of whiskey. "I overheard how your husband plans to destroy me."

Karyl stiffened in shock to find Zayn. "I'm sorry, Mr. Raymond. Have you been listening?"

"Every single word," Zayn said, keeping a shitty smile on his face. "Hello, Reeds. Fancy seeing you here."

Zayn reached out for a handshake but Reeds refused to shake his hand. "I don't shake the hands of a scum," Reeds said coldly.

"Reeds!" Karyl frowned. "That's Zayn Raymond you're talking to. Show him some respect."

"I know who he is," Reeds retorted. "He's a scumbag that wants to bed you. You shouldn't be entertaining guys like him."

Zayn chuckled as he drew back his hand. "On the contrary, Mr. Reeds Parker. Your wife and I are strictly here on business. We were just about to round up a $3 million deal before you interrupted us. By the way, this is an exclusive bar. How did you managed to get in?"

Reeds took two steps forward until he was close to Zayn. "I'll give you an answer after you explain what you're doing out late with a married woman, you adulterer!”

Zayn's smirk faltered for a second. He hated how Reeds had figured him out so easily and was calling out on his evil intentions.

In order to save face, Zayn turned to Karyl, feigning anger. "This is preposterous, Karyl Rogers. I understand your husband doesn't like me but for him to accuse me like that? It seems I'll have to drop our deal."

Karyl faced Reeds, her face burning in anger. "For crying out loud, Reeds. Look at what you've done. You want to ruin my life, don't you?"

Reeds lips ran dry. "You're defending him? Can't you see he's trying to seduce you to bed him? He's a scum, that's what he is."

"Enough," Karyl yelled at him. "I can't afford to lose this deal. You're too broke and unemployed to help me." Karyl turned to Zayn and started pleading. "Forget what he said, Mr. Raymond. He doesn't mean it."

Reeds chimed in. "You don't have to beg that rat for scraps, Karyl. I'll bag you that $5 million order in no time."

Hearing this, Zayn laughed and mocked, “You don’t have a job or any savings—someone who lives off Karyl like you, can you really come up with five million dollars?”

Reeds let out a disdainful chuckle. “Five million dollars? Is that supposed to be a big number? I can take care of it with just one phone call.”

"Pfft." Zayn burst out laughing at Reeds’ words. “Karyl, your husband might really be losing it. Five million is a small number?”

Karyl's face turned livid. She was fuming at Reeds and growled, “Reeds! You’ve truly disappointed me! I used to think you were just useless, but at least grounded. I never imagined you'd be such a petty, boastful man!”

Reeds remained calm, looking at Karyl as he said, “You’ve never believed in me, Karyl. But I’ll prove myself. Just let me make one call.”

“Go ahead then, make the call. I’d love to see how you embarrass yourself,” Zayn said with a sneer, eyes full of contempt as he looked at Reeds. He didn’t believe for a second that Reeds knew anyone important—after all, if he did, would Karyl still be sneaking out in the middle of the night to drink with him?

Reeds took out his phone, ready to make a call, only to realize it had run out of battery and shut off at the worst possible moment.

“Damn it!”

He cursed under his breath. That’s when he remembered—he had spent the entire evening waiting for a call back from Karyl and had forgotten to charge his phone.

Zayn burst out laughing. “So this is your so-called five million dollar investment? Using an excuse like that to cover up your failure? What a creative story!”

“Is this your plan?” Karyl asked hoarsely, her voice laced with anger. “To humiliate me in front of my clients just to protect your pathetic ego?”

She shot him a fierce glare, and Reeds could see it in her eyes—she was completely disappointed in him.

But he hadn’t lied. He really did have the ability to make it all happen.

“It was just an accident...”

Reeds tried to explain, but was cut off by her fury:

“Get out. ”

What could he do?

And now, with his phone dead, he couldn’t even show her the photos Zayn had sent him.

“Give me a little more time—the five million dollar investment will come through soon. Karyl, Zayn isn’t who you think he is. Just trust me, this once.”

Reeds pleaded with her.

Reeds returned to the hospital later that afternoon. Today was the day Karyl would be discharged, and he intended to be the one to take her home. The sliding doors of the hospital hissed open, the sterile scent of antiseptic filling his lungs as he strode through the lobby.Nurses glanced his way, but he ignored them and made his way to the elevator. As the elevator began its ascent, Reeds leaned back against the wall, hands casually slipping into the pockets of his denim jeans. He thought about the road ahead—about mending what had been broken in his marriage. For Seraphina’s sake, he was going to let everything from yesterday go. None of it mattered now. Not when their daughter needed her parents. Not when they had a chance to start anew. His only concern at this moment was bringing Karyl home. He would take her to meet Seraphina and somehow, they would fix what was left of their marriage. They had to. Not just for their daughter, but for themselves.Reeds smiled faintly, the co

The Next morning, at the late hours of 11.am, Zayn stirred and groaned as he sat up and yawned. He had slept well last night after his uncle assured him of destroying Reeds. He wondered if Lord Donovan had worked out a plan already. He could hardly wait for his revenge on Reeds. Before he step down the bed, a soft knock came at the door."Master Zayn," a maid called, her voice nervous and tensed. "You have an urgent call from the office. They say it cannot wait." Zayn scowled, running a hand through his disheveled hair. "At this hour? Tell them to—" Another knock, more insistent. "They said it’s critical, sir." Grumbling, Zayn swung his legs off the bed and sauntered to the phone mounted on the dresser. He snatched the receiver and barked into it. "This better be fucking important. Calling me at this time of the hour. Have you no sense of timing?"The moment the line connected, Zayn's world collapsed. "Zayn! What the hell is going on?" a furious voice shouted. It was from his

  • Melanie Carter

Reeds could only stare at the woman as she stepped into the light. She had flawless ebony skin, as flawless as Snow. Her bright brown eyes were sharp and intelligent, framed by long lashes. Her full lips were red and curled into a professional smile. She wore a snow-white shoulder-length wig that glowed under the moonlight above. Her figure was accentuated by the blue female suit she wore, tailored to perfection, hugging her wide hips elegantly. In one hand, she held a clipboard, while the other rested at her side as she stood a few feet from Reeds. "My name is Melanie Carter. I’ll be taking over Mr. Prescott’s duties effective immediately," she introduced herself. Reeds blinked. Her voice carried a slight British undertone. He turned sharply to Archibald. "When did you do this?" Archibald clasped his hands behind his back, his expression calm and unreadable. "Melanie was one of Prescott’s most capable subordinates. Given his… sudden dismissal, it was only logical to promote h

Lord Donovan’s countenance darkened, his eyes glinting with cold fury. "How dare he," his lips curled into a scowl as he growled. "Who does this Reeds think he is? To lay hand on my nephew, does he have a death wish?"Zayn swallowed hard, his voice trembling with rage and pain. "Uncle, he—he claims to be the heir to the Higgins family. But that can’t be true, can it? The Higgins family hasn’t even announced an heir yet!"Lord Donovan released Zayn’s chin and straightened. He stroked his salt-and-pepper beard thoughtfully, his gaze distant. After a long silence, he murmured, "It’s possible. I’m a core member of the Higgins family, and even I don’t know who the heir is! If Reeds really were the heir, I would’ve known!"Zayn’s eyes widened in shock. "What? You don't know who the heir is? How is that possible?""Because the family’s matriarch has kept it a closely guarded secret—even from me. Only a handful of her most trusted confidants know the truth. She’s never fully trusted me, des

The moment Reeds was gone, Evelyn turned to Karyl. "I still can't believe Zayn would do something like this to you. Let's sue him.""We can't, mother," Karyl muttered, lowering her head. "Zayn has friends and allies in high places. Moreover, he's my company's major shareholder. I'm afraid after what transpired today, my company would be no more.""I hate to admit it but you're right, Karyl," Hubert said, stroking his chin. "If you plan to go up against someone like Zayn, you need someone equally wealthy."At that very moment, an idea sparked inside Karyl's brain. She glanced sharply at Chris who stood up by the side, watching her with a modest smile on his face. "Chris," she began, her eyes pleading. "This might come out wrong but I have no other choice. My husband is completely useless to me. You're the only person I can turn to right now."Chris kept his smile fixed, eyeing her closely. "What do you want, Karyl?"Karyl took a deep breath. "The Thompson family has powers and resourc
