Neph

Back home, Rin saw his mother sitting on a chair, closely observing the strange dark-blue stone placed on the dining table.

“I’m home!” he said as he walked toward her.

Without even turning her head, she replied, “Ok.”

Madame was too busy and clearly too captivated by that object.

“What did you figure out about it?” Rin asked with curiosity.

“It’s fascinating,” she simply said, still lost in thought, her eyes fixed on the stone.

“How so?”

“We’ll postpone the visit to Marc and George’s parents for a few days. I’m tired today,” the young woman said as she stood up, took the stone, and walked toward the stairs, looking extremely exhausted.

Okay… maybe once I get mine, I’ll understand what’s wrong with her, Rin thought.

Speaking of Neph… I should continue without going outside. Outside is dangerous.

He paused, then sighed.

Even inside is dangerous in a way.

Then he heard his mother speaking again as she went upstairs.

“By the way, you should try getting closer to the Aurore family’s daughter tomorrow at university.”

A Neph is an object born from the strong will of an individual to become something or achieve something.

In other words, when your desire to become or achieve something is strong enough, that will manifests into a stone. That stone helps you accomplish it for reasons unknown.

And that stone is the Neph.

For example, if someone has the strong will to become a police officer, that will creates a stone. That stone is the Neph. It helps them achieve that goal in a supernatural way because this world contains supernatural abilities. Due to differences in willpower, Nephs vary in strength.

Rin finally understood what was happening with his mother.

She is an inspector, investigating Marc and George… and she found the stone this morning next to her bed. Rin thought.

So her obsession with solving the case as an inspector might have created the stone? An inspector relies on reasoning and ideas… that explains why she thinks faster and gets ideas so quickly. Rin felt enlightened.

But that wasn’t all.

A Neph never leaves its owner. Even if stolen or destroyed, the will that created it reforms it. So to truly destroy it, you must destroy the will behind it.

But even that might become useless if the owner has already assimilated part—or all—of its power. Destroying or stealing it wouldn’t erase what has already been absorbed.

Another wave of information flooded his mind.

A Neph user is more powerful than a normal magician, due to the nature of the Neph.
