The armored glass of the VIP elevator shattered inward in a cascade of lethal, glittering hail.

Before the first glass shard touched the plush carpet, Jaxith tackled Elena to the floor, twisting his body mid-air to take the brunt of the impact. Automatic gunfire ripped through the shaft, turning the gold-trimmed metal frame of the elevator into a shredding machine. Tracers burned bright red lines across the dim space, smelling of ozone and burnt copper.

"Down!" Jaxith barked, his voice tight against her ear.

Elena didn't scream. She didn't hesitate. The moment her back hit the floor beneath Jaxith’s solid weight, her hands were already moving. She unclipped a matte-black suppressed pistol from the hidden holster strapped to her inner thigh, racked the slide with a sharp metallic clack, and aimed straight through the broken window.

*Pfft. Pfft.*

Two precise shots echoed through the chaos. Outside the elevator, a masked gunman clad in heavy tactical armor dropped from the steel cables, his body falling fifty stories into the abyss of the atrium below.

"That's one," Elena hissed, her dark eyes flashing in the dark. She was pressed beneath Jaxith, her chest heaving against his, but her hands were steady as granite. "You said Viper's men were outside the building, Vance!"

"Plans change when a ten-billion-dollar Excommunicado contract gets broadcast to the entire underworld," Jaxith replied smoothly. He didn't sound panicked; he sounded dangerously amused.

He pushed himself up onto one knee, grabbing Elena by the wrist to pull her to her feet just as another heavy caliber round punched through the control panel. Sparks showered over them, and the elevator shuddered violently before plunging into a free-fall down the high-rise shaft.

Gravity vanished for two horrifying seconds. Cables snapped above them like dying guitar strings, screaming in metallic agony.

Elena reached for the emergency brake lever, but Jaxith grabbed her waist, pulling her back against his chest. "Forget the mechanicals!"

"We’re going to hit the basement at two hundred miles an hour!" Elena shouted over the rushing wind.

"No, we aren't."

Jaxith closed his eyes for a split second, tapping directly into the Sovereign Core pulsing in his bloodstream.

*Sovereign Domain: Absolute Shadow.*

A wave of pitch-black energy exploded from Jaxith’s body, instantly filling the plunging elevator box with a dense, viscous fog of pure Shadow Mana. The shadows didn't just obscure vision; they solidified, wrapping around the elevator cab like dozens of massive, dark tendrils.

The terrifying free-fall ground to a sudden, bone-jarring halt. The elevator hung suspended in mid-air, suspended forty floors above the ground by invisible, writhing dark cables rooted deep within the building's steel skeleton.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Inside the box, all emergency lighting had been completely swallowed by the darkness. Elena could only hear the heavy rhythm of her own breathing and the calm, steady heartbeat of the man standing directly behind her, his chest pressed firmly against her back.

"What... what kind of power is this?" Elena whispered, her fingers tightening around her pistol. She could feel the raw, unnatural cold radiating off him—a dark, ancient force that defied every law of physics and modern science.

"The kind of power that keeps you alive," Jaxith murmured into her hair. His hand rested on her waist, his thumb lightly stroking the smooth silk of her crimson dress, sending a different kind of heat coursing through her veins. "Your head of security didn't just sell your family's vault codes, Elena. He gave the Obsidian Syndicate the exact layout of Rostova Manor."

Elena froze, her posture going rigid in the dark. "My father is still in the study."

"I know," Jaxith said. "Which is why we aren't going down to the lobby to deal with the press."

With a flick of Jaxith’s wrist, the solid shadows holding the elevator cab parted slightly, revealing the emergency maintenance hatch above their heads. He reached up, tore the steel hatch off its hinges with raw, mana-infused strength, and tossed it aside like scrap metal.

"Up," Jaxith ordered, offering her a hand.

Elena didn't waste time asking questions. She grabbed his hand, pulled herself up through the opening, and hauled herself onto the roof of the elevator cab. Jaxith followed a second later, moving with effortless, predatory grace.

The elevator shaft was a vertical tunnel of concrete and steel, lit only by the distant red emergency strobes of the floors above. Climbing up the heavy support cables were six tactical enforcers wearing night-vision goggles, their submachine guns aimed directly down at the hatch.

"Target spotted! Fire!" a voice rasped over their comms.

Before the mercenaries could squeeze their triggers, Jaxith stepped in front of Elena, his dark suit jacket catching the dim red glow of the emergency lights.

"My turn," Jaxith whispered.

He thrust his right hand forward, his fingers clawing at the open air. The dark shadows pooling around the elevator shaft responded instantly, rising like liquid obsidian. They formed sharp, razor-thin blades of solidified dark mana that shot upward through the shaft with terrifying speed.

A chorus of muffled screams echoed in the enclosed tunnel. Metal weapons were shredded into pieces, armor was pierced like wet paper, and all six mercenaries were ripped from the cables, plunging down into the darkness below.

Not a single drop of blood touched Elena’s red dress. The shadows acted as a living shield, sweeping the debris away before it could reach her.

Elena watched the display with a mix of awe and cold calculation. "You aren't just a disgraced billionaire returning for his inheritance. You’re a monster."

Jaxith turned to face her, stepping close until the toes of his dress shoes touched her heels. He reached out, his long fingers gently catching a stray lock of dark hair that had fallen across her face, tucking it behind her ear. His touch was feather-light, completely at odds with the violent carnage he had just unleashed.

"I am whatever I need to be to burn the Vance name to the ground," Jaxith said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with intoxicating intensity. "And right now, I need to be your husband."

Elena’s lips curved into a sharp, dangerous smirk. "Fiancé, Vance. Don't rush the contract. We haven't even survived the night."

"We will survive," Jaxith stated with absolute certainty. "Because if anyone is going to kill you, Elena... it’s going to be me, after you break our deal."

"Is that a promise?" she purred, leaning into his touch for a fraction of a second, letting her lips brush against his jawline before she pulled away and pointed her pistol toward the maintenance door on the 45th floor. "Break the lock. We have a syndicate to crush."

Jaxith smiled—a cold, ruthless expression—and slammed his palm against the heavy steel door.

The reinforced deadbolts shattered under the impact of his Shadow Mana, blowing the heavy door off its frame and slamming it into the corridor outside.

They stepped out onto the executive penthouse floor, where a wall of floor-to-ceiling glass overlooked the sprawling, neon-lit metropolis of Aethelgard. In the distance, blacked-out military helicopters were already circling the skies above Rostova Manor, their searchlights cutting through the heavy rainstorm brewing over the city.

Jaxith pulled a encrypted satellite communicator from his pocket and pressed a single speed-dial key.

"Kaelen," Jaxith spoke into the comms, his voice cutting like a razor. "Initiate Phase Two. Activate the Shadow Syndicate cells across the Eastern District. Tell them the Sovereign has returned."

*"Understood, My Lord,"* a deep, icy voice responded over the speaker. *"And the Obsidian Syndicate forces surrounding Rostova Manor?"*

Jaxith looked over at Elena, who was reloading her magazine with calm, lethal efficiency, her eyes fixed on the distant helicopters attacking her home.

"Leave the commanders to us," Jaxith said, his eyes flashing with a dangerous crimson light as the shadows around his feet began to swirl once more. "We're coming to claim our wedding present."
