The rain fell in sheets over the jagged cliffs of the Vermilion Mountains, washing away the scent of cedar but leaving the metallic tang of fresh blood behind. At the grand marble gates of the Vermilion Sect, Lu Chen knelt on the razor-sharp flagstones. His fingers dug deeply into the cracks between the stones, his nails bleeding, but he felt no pain. His entire universe had narrowed down to the single, pulsating object nestled in his cupped palms: the Qi-Core of a Midnight Panther. It glowed with a faint, malevolent purple light, still warm with the residual life force of the beast that had slaughtered his family three years ago.

For three agonizing years, Lu Chen had lived like a ghost. He had tracked the beast through the toxic, suffocating miasma of the Ashen Peaks, surviving on bitter roots, venomous insects, and a boundless, suffocating hatred. He was nineteen years old, an age where the pampered scions of great clans were already condensing spiritual rivers in their bodies. Yet, Lu Chen’s inner self was a desolate wasteland.

Above him on the covered obsidian dais, Elder Zhao looked down. The old man’s eyes were as cold and unyielding as river ice. He slowly stroked his long silver beard, his pristine white robes entirely untouched by the raging storm. An invisible, humming barrier of refined spiritual energy deflected every stray drop of rain away from his frame, a silent testament to the vast gulf between the mortal and the divine.

"Your marrow is like dried clay, Lu Chen," Elder Zhao said. His voice was not loud, but it carried the vibrational weight of a collapsing mountain, rattling the bones in Lu Chen's chest. "You have spent three years hunting a low-tier beast, yet you have not even condensed a single drop of spiritual liquid in your dantian. Your meridians are narrow, brittle, and blocked. This panther core is valuable to the sect's alchemy hall, yes. But the Vermilion Sect does not waste its divine pills on beggars with broken foundations."

"I do not ask for your pills, Elder," Lu Chen whispered. His voice was hoarse, raspy from years of breathing volcanic ash and screaming into the mountain winds. He forced his head up, his dark eyes burning with an intensity so fierce it made the guard standing next to the elder subtly shift his stance. "I ask only for the Shattered Mirror Technique. Let me enter the Outer Disciple trial at dawn. If I fail, the panther core belongs to the sect, and my corpse belongs to the mountain vultures."

The elder paused. A flicker of genuine amusement broke through his icy demeanor. The Shattered Mirror Technique was a notorious, forbidden manual stored in the lowest depths of the sect’s library. It was a suicidal path. Standard cultivation required a practitioner to gently nurture their spiritual pathways, smoothing out the flow of energy like a calm river. The Shattered Mirror demanded the exact opposite: a cultivator had to intentionally fracture their own spiritual pathways and rebuild them from the wreckage. Nine out of ten who attempted it ended up as crippled husks, coughing up their own organs before dying in excruciating agony.

"A reckless gamble for a worthless life," Elder Zhao murmured, waving a silk-sleeved arm.

An invisible force flew through the air. The Midnight Panther core vanished from Lu Chen’s hands. In its place fell a cold, heavy iron token and a thin, weathered booklet wrapped in cracked animal hide.

"The trial begins at dawn at the base of the floating peaks," the elder said, turning his back. "Do not be late."

Lu Chen did not return to the squalid servant quarters where the lowborn washed the laundry of the sect's elites. He knew that if he slept tonight, he would never wake up with the strength required to survive the morning. Instead, he dragged his battered body into the deep forest bordering the sect grounds, seeking refuge under the massive, hollow roots of an ancient banyan tree.

The storm howled outside, but beneath the roots, it was deathly quiet. Lu Chen sat cross-legged, placing the weathered manual on his lap. He flipped through the blood-stained pages, memorizing the agonizing instructions. The words seemed to dance like mocking demons in the dim light. To forge a mirror that never cracks, one must first embrace the shattering.

Closing his eyes, Lu Chen took a deep, ragged breath. He reached out with his meager consciousness, pulling the chaotic, unrefined ambient Qi of the forest into his chest. The energy was wild, filled with the harshness of the storm. Normally, a cultivator would filter this energy through their meridians, purifying it slowly. Lu Chen did not filter it. He dragged the raw, burning energy straight into his chest, forcing it to coil into a jagged, spinning spike directly above his navel.

The manual’s final warning echoed in his mind: Despair is the only catalyst.

With a silent scream locked behind his clenched teeth, Lu Chen slammed the spiritual spike downward, straight into his own dantian.

The agony was absolute. It felt as if a white-hot iron blade had been thrust into his abdomen and twisted repeatedly. Blood instantly welled up in his throat, spilling past his lips and staining his tattered shirt. Inside his body, his spiritual pathways fractured like cheap porcelain under a hammer blow. The pain radiated outward, tearing at his muscles, his bones, and his very sanity. He felt his life force leaking out into the cold earth beneath him.

No! Lu Chen roared internally, his mind clawing frantically at the edges of a encroaching black void. I will not die here! Not while the scum who rule this world look down on the weak!

Refusing to lose consciousness, he executed the second, lethal phase of the technique. Using the sheer force of his willpower, he commanded the leaking, chaotic energy to stop escaping. Instead of letting the broken shards of his meridians dissolve, he used his mind as a vice, forcing the sharp, broken fragments of his foundation to trap the exploding energy. He began to grind them together.

Hours bled into one another in a haze of red pain. The storm outside eventually passed, replaced by the suffocating silence of the pre-dawn mist. Inside the banyan tree, Lu Chen’s body stopped trembling. The internal bleeding had ceased.

Slowly, Lu Chen opened his eyes. He exhaled a long, dark cloud of foul-smelling, black vapor—the impurities of his old clay foundation thrown out of his body. He looked down at his hands. They were no longer shaking. When he swept his consciousness inward, he gasped.

Where a smooth, peaceful sphere of energy should have been, there now spun a miniature, razor-sharp vortex of pure, compressed Qi. It looked like a cyclone made of broken glass, spinning at a terrifying speed. By shattering his fragile pathways, he had forced his body to rebuild them wider, tougher, and completely unyielding. He had bypassed the ordinary ranks of mortal tempering entirely. He had stepped directly into the First Layer of the Iron Qi Realm.

As the first pale light of dawn filtered through the forest canopy, Lu Chen stood up. His bones popped like firecrackers. He grabbed his iron token and walked out of the forest, heading toward the floating peaks. The beggar was dead. A cultivator forged in blood was about to take his place.

‎The central chamber of the Star-Ship Foundry descended into a chaotic symphony of violence and creation. Colossal steam-powered gantry cranes whined under the weight of massive, four-inch-thick hull plates forged from dark Void-Iron—a rare, density-defying metal that could withstand the crushing gravity of the higher planes. Thousands of multi-limbed Iron-Weaver blacksmiths swarmed the split-open chassis of the Iron Sovereign, their heavy hammers raining a continuous shower of blinding orange sparks onto the deck.‎Lu Chen sat cross-legged at the absolute center of the exposed hull, directly above the ship's pulsing star-core.
