2026-08-12 12:44:35The gates of the Dwayne Manor were wide open, a woman in her mid fifties was standing outside, looking about as if she was expecting someone.
After a while, she walked back in.
“Boss, how do you like everything I have prepared?” Paul asked, looking into the rearview mirror.
“You did a great job!” Lyon commended him.
As usual, Paul had exceeded his expectation, his tux for the nice was perfect.
That was not all, when he got back from the antique night, he had handled the setting up of the house and even filled his closet with new clothes, shoes and other essential things he needed
One would think he had paid a team of people to work for him but it was all Paul’s job. It was amazing that he could pull all of that in such a short time.
“Sir, I was able to get the office of the closer in charge of the KlinMeal Restaurants. I fixed an appointment and we are asked to come in at 12pm tomorrow.” Paul informed Lyon as he parked the car in front of the manor.
“I can’t believe you did all of this today. You can go back home and rest, I will take a cab back home.” Lyon instructed.
“But sir…..”
Lyon did not give him a chance to refuse him. “I won’t be taking no for an answer,” He grabbed the little gift bag from the seat. “As for our meals, hire a chef to take that burden off your shoulders. Plus a housekeeper.”
With that he got out of the car and made his way into the manor. He liked how diligent Paul was but he was not going to let him work himself to death that was why he sent him home.
Besides he didn’t want any of his family members questioning where he had gotten money to afford a car.
He adjusted his tie before entering the dinner hall. As the servants pulled the door open, he set his eyes on the familiar environment and a wave of nostalgia hit him.
The big family treated each other with hostility but they took events like this seriously, not sparing the feasts, the gifts and drinks.The scene was the same plus the chattering.
“Lyon!” A woman’s voice called and the whole room stopped to look at him.
The woman who had called him was his mother Linda, she had waited all night for him at the door, she only left when she thought he was not going to show up.
He bowed his head slowly, “I apologize for coming late tonight, it took a lot of….”
“Are you going to stand on ceremony like you are some stranger?” The Old Madam spoke up. “Sit near your mother instead of acting like you are not one of us.”
He bowed again and walked over to the empty seat close to his mother.
There were three separate tables and they occupied it according to their hierarchies.
Hierarchy in the Dwayne family is formed according to their worth, the first and fourth branches shared the biggest table with the Old Madam.
Both of them are the families of the first and fourth daughter and son of the Dwayne family. The second table had the families of the second and fifth branches then the third table had the third branch which had his mom and him and other illegitimate children of the Dwayne family.
Lyon’s father had passed away after his birth, plus he had not achieved anything before he passed and his mother came from a poor family with little dowry so his status in the family had been low from the day he was born.
“Who knew you were going to show up tonight? I guess your situation has made you realize that all you have is your family.” Kaleb, his second uncle commented, “It feels like yesterday when you packed your things up and left the manor, now you show up looking like a different man.”
“I heard your wife left you and she is married to some rich man now, how true is that?” Gina, the oldest daughter from the first branch, broke the silence.
“Your tuxedo looks so expensive, how are you able to afford that? Your security job cannot pay that. Did your ex-wife’s new husband pay you a lot of money so you could leave her?’
“Is it not too early to probe our cousin? He must still be going through a heart wrenching pain.” Jane, the first daughter from the fourth branch replied.
This triggered questions from every other person
“What about the kids? Are you guys co-parenting? “
Do they live with you?”
“Does their mother’s new husband accept them?”
“Why did you not come with them tonight?”
“They are a part of this family, it is only right that they are here. If only?”
Linda held her son’s hand. This was the first time she was seeing him in years, she did not even go see him when he had kids or got married.
Yet she knew nothing about him, only rumors that circulated around the family because she had little contact with the outside..
Lyon sat cold as the questions flowed in, he didn’t know if this was the time to tell them that his kids were not his. He didn’t come to the Thanksgiving dinner expecting that everyone would be so invested in his personal life.
Besides, Racheal and the kids had no idea whether he was dead or alive.
Aunty May cleared her throat, she was the first daughter of the Old Madam. “If you are tired of eating, we can move the gift presentation. Stop bugging that boy over the kids that do not belong to him!”
