The BMW 5 Series and 7 Series look very similar, with the main differences lying in their interiors. Ordinary people can hardly distinguish them from the outside, mainly relying on the rear badges for identification.

The 520 is the base model of the 5 Series, with average power, average handling, and mediocrity in all aspects.

The 760, on the other hand, is the top-of-the-line model in the 7 Series, boasting (extremely powerful performance), superb handling, and excellence in every regard.

As Alan drove the 760, he thought to himself: Mia doesn’t know much about cars.

If he told her it was a BMW 520, she probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

The owner of the repair shop clicked his tongue in disbelief, thinking: This guy looks honest, but he’s actually so cunning.

Deliberately modifying the top-of-the-line 760 to look like a 520—he must be planning to pretend to be weak to outsmart others!

After buying the car, Alan remembered that Norris’s restaurant was opening at noon that day, and he needed to prepare a gift.

Thinking that Norris was one of the few classmates who had been kind to him during college,

he drove directly to a large art consignment shop and spent $100,000 on an early painting by Huang Shen, a Qing Dynasty Chinese painter.

The reason for choosing this ancient painting was twofold: on one hand, he felt that Norris deserved a weighty gift; on the other hand, he didn’t want others to know the painting’s actual value.

He figured that if anyone asked, he could just casually say it cost a few hundred dollars to brush off the question.

By the time he finished buying the painting, it was almost noon.

Alan called his wife, Mia, to tell her he would pick her up at Delaney Group, along with Caroline.

But when they met, Mia was shocked to see Alan driving a BMW 5 Series!

Staring at him dumbfounded, she asked in surprise, “Where did this car come from?”

Alan smiled and said, “I bought it for you!”

“You bought it?” Mia was even more astonished. “Where did you get the money?”

Alan said, "From my hidden savings."

"I've been with the Mill family for so long, and I didn't spend a penny on our wedding.

Is it really that strange that I've saved some hidden money after living off the Mill family's resources all these years?"

Mia said, "But you could have just kept the money for yourself!

Why buy such an expensive car? This must cost $70,000, right?"

Alan smiled and said, "You're my wife.

Who else would I spend my hidden savings on if not you?

Do you think I'd spend it on mistresses outside?"

He added, "Besides, you're a company director now. If you don't have a decent car, people will laugh at you."

Just then, Caroline chimed in, "Mia, you really do need a more professional car for business.

This one suits you well. Alan has you in his heart—you should be happy!"

Mia nodded, deeply moved, and said, "Thank you, Alan!"

Alan gently squeezed her hand and smiled, "Why be so polite with your husband?"

Then he beckoned to both of them and said, "Let's go straight to Norris's restaurant!"

Mia hurriedly asked, "Did you buy him a gift?"

"I did," Alan replied. "I bought him a painting."

"A painting?" Mia asked curiously. "What kind of painting?"

Alan said, "One of those ancient paintings sold on Antique Street.

It depicts a pomegranate, which symbolizes multiple children, wealth, and blessings. I thought it had a nice meaning, so I bought it."

Mia asked, "How much did you pay for it?"

"Just a few hundred dollars."

Mia nodded and smiled, "Then you might have been scammed!

You can't buy a genuine ancient Chinese painting for a few hundred dollars."

Alan laughed and said, "It doesn't matter. It's mainly a token of my feelings. The gift is small, but the thought is deep."

Mia nodded in agreement and said, "You're right.

It's all about the sentiment. Let's go straight there now!"

Norris's new restaurant is located in the development zone of Plath City.

The development zone is quite far from the city center and sparsely populated.

Alan was a bit puzzled why Norris chose to open the restaurant here.

But Mia said that several large manufacturing enterprises were recently moving into the development zone, and it would soon become bustling.

So Norris was actually quite wise to open the restaurant here now.

Norris's restaurant is on the side of a wide new street. It looks quite large, with two floors.

The restaurant is named Blanca Western Restaurant.

When Alan drove to the restaurant entrance, a row of cars was already parked there.

Several people were standing in front of a golden BMW sedan, smoking and chatting.

Alan recognized these people—they were all former classmates from his college class.

But he didn't have much rapport with them.

The leader among them, Alan remembered, was named Hamlin, a well-known rich second-generation student in the class at the time.

He had always had feelings for Mia, but she completely ignored him.

At this moment, Hamlin leaned against his golden BMW, accepting compliments from his classmates.

Several male classmates commented on his newly bought BMW sedan, exclaiming, "Hamlin, you're truly a winner in life!

It's been such a short time since graduation, and you're already driving a BMW!

Is this a BMW 540? The top configuration of the 5 Series?"

Hamlin laughed heartily and said, "Ah, the 540 is just a commuter car worth over $100,000. "

"But the 540 is the most expensive model in the 5 Series! Must have incredible power, right?"

Hamlin smiled and said, "Not bad, not bad. The performance is relatively strong—usually unrivaled on the road."

"Amazing! I wish I could have a BMW sedan. My girlfriend keeps complaining that I can't afford a car—it's so annoying!"

Just then, someone with sharp eyes noticed another BMW approaching.

They exclaimed in surprise, "Hey, is this BMW also driven by a classmate?

Isn't that Alan, the loser?

The person sitting in the passenger seat looks like Mia!

Damn, that freeloader actually got a BMW too. He must be mooching off Mia!"

Hamlin also saw Alan in the car. With a dark expression, he said, "So it's this good-for-nothing! Damn, he sure has all the luck!"

At this moment, someone asked, "Hey, which series of BMW is he driving?"

Just then, Alan drove the car nearby and reversed into a parking space.

When Hamlin saw the "520" badge on the rear, he immediately sneered disdainfully, "Tsk, a 520.

The lowest (base model) of the 5 Series—only losers who pretend to be rich drive this model!"

Someone beside him immediately nodded and said, "Hamlin, yours is the top-of-the-line 5 Series, while his is the cheapest one. It's nowhere near yours, right?"

Hamlin snorted coldly, "My car could buy two of his!"

"Still, Hamlin is awesome!"

Just then, Alan parked the car, and Mia and Caroline got out first.

Several boys immediately stared in awe and swarmed to greet them.

"Two of our class's most beautiful women are here together!"

Mia and Caroline politely greeted everyone.

Looking at Mia, who was now even more stunning, Hamlin felt 极度不平衡 (extremely unbalanced) inside.

Damn it, why?

When he had desperately pursued Mia in college, she hadn't paid him any attention.

Now, she had married a live-in son-in-law, a freeloading good-for-nothing!

The heavens must be blind!

Thinking this, he sneered and mocked, "Wow, Alan, you seem to be treated really well at Mia's house!

You're even driving a BMW! Did Mia's family buy it for you?

You're truly an example for us men on how to take shortcuts!"

Mia's expression turned displeased upon hearing this.

Caroline beside her immediately retorted, "Hamlin, you're wrong. This car wasn't bought by Mia's family—it was purchased by Alan himself!"

With that, Kendall heaved a sigh and went on. But even when your father was a young man, foreign trade carried out by domestic entrepreneurs remained largely unchanged from the Tang and Song dynasties, lacking any sophisticated expertise. Meanwhile, Europeans and Americans had mastered cross-border finance to perfection—stocks, futures, oil, gold, private equity funds, hedge funds, venture capital; these were their core trump cards back then. While Asian nations were slaving away manufacturing goods to trade overseas and scrape together profits bit by bit, Western hedge funds flooded Asia with massive hot money, wreaking havoc everywhere. They could trigger financial crises and legally seize the fruits of an Asian country’s labor accumulated over years, even decades, sending its finance, stock market and real estate market crashing down all at once.Back then, the Field Family set their sights on exploiting major domestic clans. The rest of the clan chimed in one after another, their reasoning plain and simple: Alan had grown up in humble circumstances and was simply unworthy of the eldest young lady of the Bruce Family.Domingo wore a sneering look as he spoke. Father, even though Alan is Second Brother’s son, he’s exactly what young people nowadays call a nobody. How could such a man ever compare to a peerless beauty like Louise?Seeing every single person speaking out in opposition, the old Smith patriarch let out a cold snort and said, Do any of you know that Louise’s mother—the eldest daughter-in-law of the Bruce Family—once would have died for John? That’s right, Gaston, Alan’s male cousin, cut in. I’ve crossed paths with Louise from the Bruce Family before. She’s an icy, reserved woman who rarely attends social events.
