*****

On the plane, currently seated by the window, Zach stared out at the vast stretch of darkness outside, appearing as though he was enjoying the scene while quietly contemplating life.

However, if anyone truly looks into his eyes at this moment, they would immediately be able to tell that Zach wasn’t seeing the night sky at all.

In fact, at this moment, his pupils were completely unfocused and empty… seemingly piercing beyond the clouds, plane, and time itself.

He was staring outward, but his mind had already gone somewhere else… the unfortunate night ten years ago.

This happens every single time he is alone… However, every time he spoke of it, just as he had done in the camp not long ago, he saw it even more vividly.

And so, at this moment, Zach’s mind was filled with a clear image of the night, as though it was just happening.

He could still see the scene of his father standing in front of them with his arms spread wide, trying to shield everyone from the raging fire with nothing but his own body.

The way the flames wrapped around his body and climbed higher, burning hotter until his flesh gave way, was still very vivid.

Then there was his scream, so agonizing and soul-curdling that it still echoed fresh in Zach’s head, refusing to fade no matter how many years passed.

Then came his mother.

She had desperately tried to extinguish the fire burning his father alive, but all had been to no avail... and she had even been badly burned in the process.

Then, after his father had been completely engulfed by the flames, she had stepped forward without hesitation.

Zach could still remember the desperate, horrified, and utterly devastated look on her face, but even then, she had forced herself to stay strong for their sake.

She had grabbed him and his brother, trying to rescue them from the burning fire.

Zach could still recall her frantic and unsteady movements as she searched blindly for an exit through smoke and fire.

And in the process, a burning chandelier had torn loose from the ceiling, falling straight toward him.

It should have crashed into him, and in fact, it should have ended his life right there, burning him to ashes.

But it hadn’t.

At the last possible second, his younger brother had shoved him out of the way with all his strength.

Zach still remembered his brother desperately yelling his name before shoving him out of the way, slamming his body into the ground.

He still recalled the shock that had stolen the breath from his lungs, and then… nothing where his brother should have been.

His brother had taken the death meant for him.

Ten years had already passed since that night, yet not a single day had gone by without those scenes replaying themselves in his mind.

They surfaced in his thoughts, whether he welcomed them or not.

Was it his mother’s death that hurt the most?

Her end had been even more horrific.

After his father and brother had died, his mother had forced herself to remain standing for him.

Zach had never seen her so broken before… and at the same time, he had never realized just how strong she could be.

Since all the entrances had been blocked from the outside… blocked by the enemy to ensure that no one would escape and that everyone inside would burn to death, his mother had dragged him toward the kitchen.

There had been a secret exit there… their last hope.

But unfortunately… they never reached it.

A gas had exploded, the blast tearing through the kitchen with terrifying force.

But before the flames could consume both of them, his mother had turned back to him, and in a desperate, final attempt to save his life, had shoved him away with everything she had left.

And the result… she had been swallowed by the fire.

Zach could still remember it… every second of it.

Even as his mother endured the unbearable agony of being burned alive, she still made sure to lock the kitchen door behind her.

She had sealed it shut with her own body so that the intensified flames wouldn’t reach him, making sure to protect him even while dying.

Zach remembered all of it… the worst and most traumatic day of his life.

It was a day he wasn’t sure he would ever truly recover from, no matter how much time passed or how strong he became.

Those memories would never fade. Instead, they would always remain fresh and always surface every time he was alone.
