The fastest way to the Outer Ring ran straight through Dead Man's Cut. Every other courier in the pool avoided it. Ethan had ridden it a hundred times without a scratch. He wasn't reckless. He just knew where the fence had rusted through and how fast to pedal past the gap without thinking about it.
Fifteen minutes saved, every time. Fifteen minutes nobody else was willing to buy with their own skin. Today it earned its name a little more than usual. Something moved along the fence line … low, fast, gone before his eyes could register it. His hands tightened on the bars without his permission. He didn't slow down. Slowing down was how people stopped riding the Cut at all, and then they were back to the long way, and the long way cost him money he didn't have. His tablet chimed with a smaller job stacked onto the route … a courtesy pickup he could grab without losing time. A townhouse near the Ring's edge, the kind with a private elevator and a name plate instead of a buzzer. A man answered the door in house clothes that probably cost more than Ethan's bike. A faint gold shimmer traced his forearms … some minor luck ability, the sort rich families paid to have their children tested for before they could walk. "You're late," the man said, before Ethan had reached the step. "Traffic on the Ring road." "There's no traffic on the Ring road. There's traffic where people like you ride." He took the package without a thank you, turning it over like he expected damage. "Next time send someone faster." "I am the fast one." The man smiled, the kind of smile that wasn't for Ethan at all. "Sure you are." The door closed. Ethan stood on the step a second longer than he needed to, jaw tight, rain running cold down his neck. He'd heard worse. He'd said less, plenty of times, when less was the difference between getting paid and not. It never stopped landing somewhere it shouldn't. His tablet buzzed with a call before he'd made it back to the bike. Danny. "You still breathing?" Danny asked. "Barely. Rich guy just called me slow to my face." "Rich guy calls everyone slow. It's how they say good morning." A pause, static crackling on Danny's end. "You headed to the Ring depot? I heard the Zone 4 job's already been picked up." "That'd be me." Danny didn't laugh this time. "Seriously?" "Seriously." "Ethan. Rates like that don't come from nowhere." "I know what rates like that come from. I also know what rent costs." Ethan swung a leg over the bike. "I'll call you after." "You'd better," Danny said, and hung up before Ethan could decide whether that had sounded like a joke. Back on the bike, back through the Cut, he counted instead of feeling anything. Four minutes to the depot. Two hundred and forty seconds. Numbers didn't insult you. Numbers didn't look at you like a service instead of a person. The depot sat behind a checkpoint that hadn't existed last time he'd delivered out here. A guard in guild colors waved him through after scanning his tablet twice. "Priority run?" the guard asked. "Supposed to be." "You're either brave or stupid, kid." "I get that a lot." "They tell you what's inside the case yet?" "Not yet." The guard's smile faded a little. "They won't. Just sign fast and don't linger once you've got it." Ethan filed that away next to the dispatcher's warning from an hour ago. Two people now who knew more than they were saying, and neither of them saying it. Inside, a supervisor on the raised platform was shouting at a forklift crew to double their pace, something about a shipment deadline nobody had bothered to explain to the floor staff. A younger worker jogging past clipped Ethan's shoulder hard enough to spin him half a step. He didn't stop, didn't apologize, just called back, "Watch it, courier," like the collision had been Ethan's fault for standing where an awakened man wanted to walk. Ethan let it go. Fighting for an apology cost more than it was worth. He found the counter and gave his job number. The clerk didn't look up right away. When she did, something in her face shifted … not recognition, reassessment. "You're the Zone 4 run?" "That's me." "Huh." She tapped something into her terminal, slow, like she was deciding whether to say more. "Guild usually sends their own for this one." "Guess I got lucky." "Guess so." She didn't sound like she believed it, and disappeared through a back door without another word. She came back with an older man in a stained work jacket, wheeling a reinforced case on a hand truck … matte black, sealed, a biohazard placard bolted to the side that Ethan was fairly sure wasn't standard packaging for anything he'd ever carried. "This is it?" he asked. "This is it." The man set the case down hard enough that something inside shifted with a wet, heavy sound Ethan didn't like at all. "Containment sample. Guild needs it at the western checkpoint before tonight's diagnostics." "What kind of sample?" The man's eyes flicked to the clerk, then back, and something in his face closed like a door. "Above my pay grade. Above yours too, probably." "You're telling me to carry it and not ask." "I'm telling you to carry it and not open it, and not ask twice either." He crouched, locking the case onto Ethan's bike, fastening straps that felt heavier than the job description had suggested. "It's stable. It's supposed to stay stable. You don't slow down, you don't stop for anything between here and the checkpoint, and if it starts making noise…" He stopped there. "If it starts making noise, what?" The old man straightened, wiped his hands on his jacket, and looked at Ethan the way you'd look at someone you didn't expect to see again. "Just don't let it," he said. Behind him, something in the stacked crates shifted on its own … a slow, deliberate thump against the inside of a container three rows back, followed by a silence so complete that every forklift in the building seemed to stop at once.Latest Chapter
Chapter 11: The Cost of Strength
Ethan sat with his phone in his hand for a long time, and eventually just turned the screen off and set it face-down on the mattress like that would stop whoever was watching from watching. It didn't feel like it worked. Nothing tonight had felt like anything worked.Sleep, when it finally came, lasted less than it should have and ended the way most things had started ending lately … with a notification.[NEW MISSION AVAILABLE.] [TARGET: LOW-TIER MONSTER DEN, LOWER BLOCKS SECTOR 7.] [REWARD: ENHANCED STRENGTH.] [TIME LIMIT: NONE.]No time limit. Ethan read that part twice, waiting for the trick. Every mission so far had come with a countdown, a threat, a leash pulled tight enough to feel. This one just sat there, patient, almost polite."What's the catch," he said out loud, to a ceiling that didn't answer. He got up anyway. Not because the system had forced him … his arm stayed his own this time, his legs answered to him and no one else … but because refusing had already cost him a ni
Chapter 10: On Record
Ethan made it four blocks from the sparring yard before his legs decided they were done negotiating. He sat down hard on a bus bench that had seen better decades, the case-shaped ache in his side pulsing in time with his heartbeat, and let himself just breathe for a minute. No notifications. No countdown. For the first time since the monster's claw had found him, the corner of his vision was simply empty. He didn't trust it. Empty had a way of not staying empty. His tablet buzzed … the personal line, not dispatch. Danny.*Heard you're not showing up for your shift tomorrow. You okay, what happened?*Ethan stared at the message for a long moment, trying to figure out which part of the last several hours he could possibly explain in a text. A voice in my head made me fight a stranger and it worked, wasn't going to land the way he needed it to.*Long night*, he typed instead. *I'm fine. Explain later.**You keep saying that.**I keep meaning it.*He pocketed the phone before Danny could
Chapter 9: Contact
"Rules are simple," the stranger said, rolling his neck like this was a formality he'd rather skip. "First one down stays down. Guild doesn't cover hospital bills for sparring accidents, so try not to need one.""Nobody's covering mine either way," Ethan said. "I'm not registered."That got a reaction … a flicker of something behind the man's eyes, surprise wearing the shape of contempt. "You're joking.""I wish.""They sent me an unregistered nobody." The stranger's shimmer brightened along his knuckles, blue-white light gathering there like a static building before a storm. "This is going to be embarrassing for both of us.""For one of us," Ethan said, and didn't wait for a rebuttal. He came in low, the way he'd watched a hundred hunters do it in a hundred saved clips, weight forward, aiming for the same mistake he'd catalogued in his notebooks a dozen times over … the half-second where an awakened fighter, confident in their ability, forgot their footwork mattered too.The stranger
Chapter 8: Six Hours
The paramedics arrived four minutes too late to matter and just in time to be useful anyway.Ethan sat against the scaffolding while a medic pressed something cold and chemical against his side, Lily wrapped in a foil blanket a few feet away, already being fussed over by a second responder who kept asking her questions she was too shaken to answer. The hunter … Ethan still didn't know his name … stood over both of them like he wasn't sure whether to thank Ethan or arrest him.A containment tech pulled the reinforced case off Ethan's back before he'd even finished sitting down, running a scanner over its seals with the kind of urgency that suggested this wasn't routine. It beeped clean. "Not cracked," the tech said, sounding more relieved than professional. "You're lucky. Guild's going to want a full report on why a civilian courier was hauling this through an active breach, but that's tomorrow's problem." He carried it off into the dark without waiting for an answer, and just like tha
Chapter 7: Survive
The words hung there, cold and silent, and for a moment Ethan thought he'd already died and this was simply what dying looked like from the inside. Then more text bled into the space beside the first line, and none of it read like a welcome.[HOST COMPATIBILITY: UNKNOWN.] [SYSTEM STABILITY: 37%.]No fanfare. No triumphant chime. Just numbers that sounded less like a gift and more like a diagnosis someone hadn't finished running yet."Ethan, stay with me!" The hunter's voice, distant, frantic, still too far away to reach him in time. "Backup's two minutes out, just stay…"Two minutes. Ethan didn't have two minutes. He barely had two seconds.Above him, the monster's shadow fell across his ruined vision, close enough now that he could feel the heat coming off it. Lily's hands were still pressed to his side, still shaking, still refusing to let go even as the thing that had put him here closed the last few feet between them.[BEGINNER MISSION: SURVIVE.]"How," Ethan tried to say, and fou
Chapter 6: Nothing Between Us
"Run," the hunter said, finally unfreezing. "Get her out of here, I'll hold it…""With what?" Ethan snapped. The hunter's hands were empty. No weapon, no visible ability flaring to life, nothing but a man in guild colors staring down something four times his size."I don't know yet. Run anyway.""You said command's not clearing anyone to fight, either.""Command's not here." The hunter's voice cracked on the last word. "Go. Now."Ethan ran.He didn't get far. The street behind the evacuation line dead-ended into a collapsed section of scaffolding, metal and concrete piled too high to climb with a child in his arms and a case on his back. He turned, already knowing what he'd see, and saw it anyway … the thing from the breach, closer now, close enough that its shape stopped being a shape and became teeth, claws, a hide the color of old bruises catching what little light the streetlamps still gave.Lily made a sound against his shoulder that wasn't quite a scream. He didn't blame her."B
