“Why is he looking at me?” Arya couldn’t stop herself from asking, her eyes wide below her furrowed brows.

Brian chuckled softly, and this time he decided not to say a word.

Ethan returned his gaze to the screen, and as he withdrew it again, he announced;

“Link Tech!” He was elated, returning his gaze to Arya like he was more pleased than she was going to be.

“Did he just say Link Tech?” Arya had to turn to Brian, hoping her ears were not deceiving her.

“You heard right, Arya. Two hundred and fifty billion dollars. Just for you.”

Arya felt her breath shaking, her mouth refusing to shut as she gaped.

“But how? There were many better companies. How did I get chosen?” She asked a question that Brian was not ready to answer, her eyes still wide like they were about to explode.

Everyone turned to the power couple who seemed to have been left out of the Power Line Project, staring especially at the CEO of Apex Ventures.

Romeo was already enraged, his eyes flaming violently.

“What?! No way!” He sparked, rising from his seat.

“That must be a mistake! I should be the one mentioned!” He pushed the seat behind him, storming forward with burning eyes.

“Apex Ventures won the honorary award for the best software company in Lakeville. We had the most notable projects that were successfully carried out! How could you award the deal to a company that has just one project carried out since the last six months?!”

He turned to Arya, eyes staring with a condescending rage.

“She doesn’t deserve to get the deal! I do!” He withdrew his finger from Arya and pointed it to himself.

“This is unfair! I should be the one, not that undeserving lady! She has only been a CEO for how long?”

Pearl rose as well, pointing an accusing finger at Ethan.

“You have made the wrong choices! We deserve those spots! No one else!” She was boiling just like her partner, standing right next to him.

Ethan remained calm, looking at the couple with no intentions of indulging them.

“Say something, Mr. Hall! Don’t just stand there and stare at me!” Romeo felt the urge to move forward, but there were too many guards at every corner of the hall.

So he remained calm, gnashing his teeth while he scowled at the Event Manager.

Just then, Owen decided to handle the situation.

He gave Ethan a sign, and the Event Manager gladly left the center of the stage for him, handing him the tablet that seemed like his personal possession at first.

The Deputy Manager looked around, meeting the faces that seemed disappointed at the choices that were made.

“I know some of you seem unhappy with the names that were read out here. But the choices were made solely by the CEO of Prime Tech. We had no hand in it.”

“You lie!” Romeo pointed Owen in the face, then a loud murmuring erupted.

Some supported his claim, while others just had different views about the unexpected turn of events.

“Mr. Sterling assured me that I was going to make it to the list. How come Apex Ventures was never mentioned?!”

Owen took a deep breath, and then he cleared his throat.

Before breaking his silence, he read the room, waiting for emotions to die down before he could address the situation.

“I think you should go back to Mr. Sterling and ask him why your company was not chosen. I am sure he will have the right explanation for you.”

Romeo growled, yet he couldn’t intimidate Owen.

“You think this is funny?!” He fired, even when he saw no sign of laughter on the face of the Deputy Manager.

“I knew something was off when Mr. Sterling left and never returned.” He took a deep breath, yet his anger was still intact, brewing inside him.

Standing in the middle of the hall with all eyes on them, the power couple suddenly felt like they had been defeated, goosebumps running through their skin.

They looked at each other, but there was no clue about the best action to take.

“Ladies and Gentlemen…” Owen continued speaking to the audience, paying attention to those who wanted to listen.

“It’s been a pleasure having all of you at this event. We say a massive congratulations to those who emerged as selected companies for our project.”

He went silent for a few seconds, savoring the smile he saw on the faces of some of the glad guests.

“We have come to the end of this event.” He stated, stepping away from the mic and allowing Ethan to take over.

Romeo clenched his fist, growling as he watched the Deputy Director step away.

“We have to do something, Romeo!” Pearl urged from the side, drawing closer to Romeo.

“We can’t just let them win. We have to fight for what rightfully belongs to us.”

Romeo stared at her silently, a reaction that she hadn’t expected.

He couldn’t tell if she was right or wrong, or if it was just desperation speaking.

But since he was angry as well, he saw a reason to want to take some action.

However, Pearl’s gesture caught his attention, and he was forced to turn to his left slowly.

Arya was marching toward them, graceful and elegant as always.

On her sides were some of the men who had always admired her, and many others who had just seen her for the first time but couldn’t help to be stunned.

Her immaculate skin glittered under the chandeliers, her footsteps were an invitation for more gawking.

Her confidence had returned, and this time she moved like the Queen of the City.

Lakeville knew about her, but more people were definitely about to find out who she was.

“Why is she walking toward us?” Pearl asked, as though she didn’t know what was coming.

  • Admiration Withdrawn

“I am sorry. I can’t do that.” Winnie was quick to respond, then a snort followed.“I think you should leave, Mr. Regal. My boss is busy at the moment. He won’t be able to see you.”“But you just told me a while ago that he was less busy,” Brian argued, his face attacked by patches of frustration. “That was before I realized that he was too busy to see someone as unimportant as you.” Winnie didn’t hide her disdain. She looked at Brian like he was a piece of rag, glaring from the crown of his head, down to the sole of his shoes. It didn’t matter if he looked presentable or not, his name was a representation of failure and a man who had acted foolishly. Brian swallowed everything in good faith. After all, he was the one who brought everything upon himself. No one forced him to sell his company, not even to the highest bidder, but to the first person who offered to purchase it for a few million dollars. “I guess I deserve that.” He took a deep breath, yet his determination

  • Greeenfield Co

Brian stood in front of the tall building, both regret and annoyance simmering inside him. The company had been renamed from SilverLine Tech to Greenfield Co after he sold it in a desperate attempt to please his ex-wife. “All for nothing…” He muttered in despair, a heavy sigh escaping his lungs. Then he began to march toward the entrance, each step feeling heavier than the last. For some reason, the guards at the casement door didn’t stop him, probably because he was dressed differently- like a businessman or important personnel. They didn’t even recognize him, not even a glimpse of who he was. Brian continued moving slowly until he arrived at the reception. The young lady seated in front of the large screen was blowing hard on ballooned gum, biting hard even when she had sucked all the juice. Her fingers were clicking hard on the keyboard, but she had to stop when she saw Brian approaching. “Hello, Sir!” She said with a smile, her eyes flashing with pure admiration.

  • Sharp Mouth

“You have to believe it, Arya. I just did.” Brian held onto his smile, and then he took a deep breath.“But why?” Arya couldn’t let it go, the intense desire to know the truth. “Let’s just say that I have finally found a purpose.” “Oh…” Arya pretended to be satisfied by Brian’s response for the second time, nodding with a deadpan expression.“I am very sorry that you were not invited to the celebration. But I am grateful that you did a great job. I will send you the balance once I am settled.” Brian chuckled softly, causing Arya’s expression to drop. The lady was already asking why he was laughing with her eyes. “Don’t worry, Arya. You can give me the balance. At the party.”“You are coming?” Arya inquired with arched brows, staring even when Brian nodded.“Yes. And I will be coming with some flowers for my future wife.” “But…” “You don’t have to say anything, Arya.” Brian stopped her before she could continue with her slippery voice, still holding onto his confident

  • Uninvited

Arya shook her head frantically, but the truth was the truth. It was hanging in the air like their breath, soaring all around her.“He is a nobody, Grandpa. Brian is my husband, and getting this deal wouldn’t have been possible without him.” “No…” Don Pedro retorted with a cold tone, pupils contrasted in annoyance.“You will bring no shame to the Kirk family, child…” He took a deep breath, then he breathed annoyance. “This…” He pointed at Brian, in search of the right noun to use. “This leech will certainly not be my grandson-in-law. You had better divorce him now that it is early.” “I agree…” Travis nodded, smiling as though he was going to get a reward for it. “I am sure that he would want to reap where he did not sow. That’s what wretched men like him do.” Brian slowly pulled down his right hand, returning it to his side.He inhaled sharply, ignoring Travis and turning to the old man. “I think you are mistaken, Mr. Kirk. I am not a nobody, I am…”“I don’t care.”

  • The Kirks

“Who are you talking about?” Brian asked with a soft tone, but when he realized that he wasn’t going to get a response by just asking, he decided to turn toward the same direction Arya was looking. He saw them. An old man probably in his early seventies, a young man in his early thirties, and six bodyguards who were bouncing behind them. The two men in front were dressed in the same tuxedos, looking like the old and young versions of each other. From the way people stared and pointed, Brian could already tell who they were. “Let me guess…” He slowly returned his gaze to Arya, catching sight of the worry on her face.“That’s your Grandpa, and your brother.”“You guessed right.” Arya let out a heavy sigh, yet she couldn’t attain relief.“I wonder what they are doing here, Brian. It’s been barely thirty minutes since the close of the event.” Arya kept on staring, but she couldn’t look either of the two men in the eyes. She looked above them, but that didn’t look like it was

  • The Response

“Hello.” Arya waved at the couple, a smirk plastered across her face. Pearl snorted, disgruntlement etched on her face. “Have you come to make fun of us?”“No! Not at all!” Arya shook her head, yet she refused to discard her wry smile. “Why would I do such a thing?” She asked silently, moving her eyes from Pearl to Romeo, and back to Pearl. “As a matter of fact, I have come to sympathize with both of you. Not every day do we get to see people get so disappointed and yet stand courageous like you.” She tutted continuously, shaking her head with a palpable sneer. Her words stung the couple as though a hive of bees had attacked them, their temper rising as they scowled at her. “What did you do to make Mr. Adkins put your name on the list?” Romeo asked, but Pearl interrupted before Arya could decide if she was going to respond or not. “Did you sleep with him?” Her voice was cold, her glaring eyes demanding an immediate response, refusing to even blink. Arya scoffed, and
