The Unfamiliar Groom

“Evan Wilson! I have been looking all over for you!” The lady bellowed, a little annoyance and impatience etched on her face.

She was graceful, a rare beauty, and of towering height.

Her long brunette hair spread across her shoulders, running down the blue gown that clung to her hourglass body.

Her skin was ravishing, her smile captivating.

“Who the hell is Evan Wilson?” Brian managed to get a grip on himself, but he couldn’t stop himself from looking at the enchantress walking up to him.

“I have been searching everywhere for you, Evan! Why have you not been taking your calls?!” The lady was still annoyed, standing before Brian whose bemusement was still intact.

“I don’t know any Evan Wilson, Lady. I think you have the wrong person.” He stated, but the lady got even angrier.

“Don’t you recognize me?” She asked, pointing to herself.

“It’s me! Arya Kirk. We are supposed to get married today.”

“Huh?” Brian exclaimed, completely taken aback by the lady’s words.

“Married? I don’t even know who you are, lady. My name is not Evan Wilson, and I have never met you before.” He couldn’t deny the fact that the name Arya Kirk was very popular, but the other thing she said threw him completely off balance.

Arya sighed heavily, attempting to get a grip on herself.

“This is not happening…” She muttered, grunting in frustration.

Then she forced a smile, looking Brian in the eyes.

“Are you telling me that you are not Evan Wilson?”

“Yes. Isn’t that obvious?” Brian retorted at once, and then he cleared his throat.

“My name is Brian, not Evan.” He stated, and the lady immediately took out her phone.

She scrolled through, and then she grunted.

“Great! The moron chickened out…” She sighed in despair, staring at the last-minute text.

“I am so sorry…” She apologized, and then she paused to get a hold on herself.

“You look like the man who was described to me. He was supposed to meet me somewhere along this road so that we could sign the prenup papers.”

“The Prenup?” Brian couldn’t stop himself from asking, his eyes wide with curiosity.

Arya looked away for a few seconds, and then she nodded, her expression still unstable.

“Yeah. I know how crazy it sounds, but I desperately need a husband. Tonight…” Her tone was distraught, her eyes glittering with dismay.

For a few seconds, Brian couldn’t bring himself to say even a word, but the urge was still lingering inside him.

“Let me get this straight…” He paused for a few seconds, and then he took a deep breath while staring at the lady who seemed to have a ridiculous motive.

“You want someone to marry you. Tonight…”

“Mm-Hmm…” Arya nodded, and then she cleared her throat.

“But it turns out that the man that I was supposed to get married to is no longer interested even with the amount I offered to pay him.”

“Oh…” Brian nodded, completely lost for words.

“Why don’t you just find someone and date him? I am sure there are good men out there who would even propose without you asking.”

Arya scoffed, shaking her head slowly.

“I don’t have that time, Brian. It’s either I find a husband tonight, or I will relinquish everything I have worked so hard to build.” She sighed in distress again, and then she looked around as though she was in search of something.

But even with the lights that bordered the road, her vision couldn’t see so far.

Brian watched her struggle with her thoughts for a while, and then he cleared his throat.

“I am sorry that your supposed groom jilted, lady. But I don’t think you will find a husband tonight. It’s barely two hours until midnight…”

“I know…” Arya grunted, and then she hissed.

Then suddenly, her eyes lit up with the crazy idea that had crawled into her mind.

She chuckled, looking Brian in the eyes.

“What if…”

“I know what you’re about to say…” Brian cut her short, able to decipher the meaning of the wry smile on her face.

“I will pay you ten million dollars…” Arya blurted, desperation laced in her tone.

Her eyes were wide, staring at Brian who was rendered speechless by her utterance.

“Please, Brian. Just marry me, and the money is yours. You get half tonight, and the rest once we are done with the project.”

“What project?”

“The Power line Project, Brian. Prime Tech is hosting an event in a couple of days, and the only way my Grandfather can let me represent the family is if I am married. I have just tonight….”

She paused for a while just to be sure that Brian was still paying attention.

“All you need to do is to appear on occasions and meetings with me when necessary. You don’t need to perform any other husband duties for me, including intimacy.”

Brian looked at the lady for a while, and then he sighed while holding onto his silence.

“Think about it, Brian. You can get a better car with the money.” Arya looked at the rickety car behind Brian and shook her head in a slight irritation.

“I am sorry. I didn’t mean it that way…” She apologized as soon as she noticed the frown on his face.

“The project is worth two hundred billion dollars, Brian. That’s an amount that can make my Grandpa finally see my worth. He thinks my brother is better because he is a man.” She hissed, rolling her eyes while anger drained her expression.

She looked into Brian’s eyes, but there was nothing to show that he had either accepted the offer or rejected it.

So she pushed forward and grabbed his hands, looking him in the eyes.

“Please, Brian. I know this is too much, but I cannot lose against the kinds of Pearl Stuttgart and Romeo Jones…”

“Did you just say Pearl Stuttgart?” Brian arched his brows, staring at the lady who nodded at once.

“Yes. Do you know them?”

Brian nodded, and then he cleared his throat.

That was the perfect opportunity to start his plans, and he couldn’t let it slip through his fingers.

“How long are we going to be married for?” He asked, looking bemused Arya in the eyes.

Her lips separated, but it took a couple of seconds before she finally muttered;

“For a year. I guess…”

“Deal. Let’s go sign the papers…”

Brian seemed like the only one who wasn’t moved by compassion, standing firm with his deadpan expression.Rebecca stared at Emilio with pity in her eyes, and before she realized it, she was already approaching him with staggering steps.“What happened, Emi? Why were you arrested?” She asked with concern glittering in her eyes, and the moment Emilio saw it, he took advantage of it. “I…” He sobbed silently, taking a deep breath. “After your brother kicked me out of this city, I decided to make something out of my life. There was no way I was going to sit idle and do nothing…” He took a break, sniffling twice for every second he was silent. “So, I joined this group of guys. A friend introduced me to this business. I thought it was just the usual offloading of cargo, but not until I got in. They made me sign an agreement of secrecy. They said it was a precaution….” “But that was a lie. They were importing weapons. Guns and ammunition of different kinds…”Rebecca covered her mou

“Did you just threaten me?” Brian asked, staring with an arched brow. “Was that a threat?” He repeated, taking a deep breath. “What do you think it is?” Emilio retorted, gritting his teeth in anger. “After everything your father did to me. You should be on your knees, apologizing. You should beg me for forgiveness!” He growled inwardly, pointing to the scar on his neck. Brian exhaled sharply, taking two steps closer to the middle-aged man.“I am not my father, Mr. Emilio. I cannot even claim to be aware of what happened to you…”“But his blood runs in your veins!” Emilio pointed out, his finger vibrating. His eyes burned like magma, like hot coals enough to flame. “Tiago Regal’s blood runs inside you, boy! You are his son, and I am sure you will be just like him.” “That’s a very funny thing to say, Mr. Emilio,” Brian said calmly, then he took two steps forward. “Because you are not entirely innocent yourself…” “What the hell are you talking about?” Emilio groaned,

  • Not a Guard

“Why not?” Brian replied almost immediately, turning to face Emilio. “You are asking why not?” Emilio scoffed, then he sniggered. “Because you are not family, boy! You are just a fucking bodyguard! You should be outside the door, keeping watch. That's where you belong. Now, go. Go do your damn job!” His voice was low but imperative, his gesture as arrogant as he was. “I wonder why you think it’s okay to interfere with a family discussion. You don’t know your boundaries. Get the hell out of here and let the family members talk…” Brian chuckled softly, turning to Rebecca. The lady said nothing, still dealing with her emotional baggage. “You want me to leave?”“Yes, boy! Get the hell out of here!” Emilio insisted, then he turned to Vicky. “Is he deaf?” He asked, but he was too ignorant to notice the look on her face, not only hers, but Carl’s as well. Rebecca was the only one who had a different countenance, and it was all because of her mood. She was heartbroken and r

  • Carl’s Father

Rebecca swallowed hard, and maybe it would have been easy for her if all the eyes in the room weren’t on her. She looked like she was standing trial, her frantic breath still in charge. “I didn’t have any choice…” She muttered, shaking her head as though it was too heavy. “I had to protect you guys. You are my children…” “That’s not the answer to my question, Mum.” Carl cut her short, eyes sparkling with impatience. “Is…” He sniffled, eyes burning with annoyance. “Is my father truly dead? Just like you told me?” “Carl…” Rebecca’s tone was broken, more tears welling in her eyes. “Just answer the question, Mum. I am begging you…” Carl pleaded, yet there was still anger in his voice. “Is he still alive? Is my father still alive?” He asked for the umpteenth time, his voice getting more distraught with every sound. Rebecca took a deep breath, then she turned to Vicky, shifting her gaze to Emilio the next second. “This is all your fault…” She said, scowling at him. “M

Why is Brian holding that man like he is a thief?” Vicky asked, turning while she refused to yield to her mother’s push.“That’s because he is a thief, Vicky.” Rebecca was quick to respond, but the uneasiness in her tone was still intact.“I need you guys to return to the hall and stay with the guests.
