To keep his true identity an absolute secret, Dane lived in a very cheap, ordinary apartment building. He used public buses and subways, never bringing his luxury cars to his home.
When they arrived, he gently handed Mara over to his asistant and instructed the assistant to help change her out of her torn, ruined dress and into a set of clean, warm, ordinary clothes.
An hour later, the drugs finally began to wear off.
Mara slowly opened her eyes. The room was small but very clean. She sat up on the soft sofa, clutching a warm blanket to her chest. She looked across the small living room. Dane was sitting quietly in a chair, watching over her.
Before she had lost consciousness at the mansion, she had heard a man's furious voice shout, Let her go! Looking at Dane now, she knew it was him. This poor, ordinary student had risked his life to save her from a monster.
Tears instantly welled up in Mara's eyes. "Thank you," she choked out, her voice trembling with deep emotion. "Thank you for saving me."
"Are you hurt?" Dane asked gently, his voice soft and warm.
Mara shook her head, crying quietly. But her relief quickly turned into absolute terror. She grabbed the edge of the blanket, her knuckles turning white.
"Do you have any idea who Vaughn Croft is?" Mara asked, panicking. "His family runs the underground in this city! They kill people and hide the bodies! You crippled him... he will send killers after you! You shouldn't have saved me! I dragged you into my nightmare!"
Dane smiled softly. "I'm not afraid of him."
Mara thought he was just putting up a brave front to make her feel better. She felt a crushing weight of guilt. She had ruined this good man's life.
Dane moved closer and handed her a warm cup of water. "Tell me everything. From the beginning. Why were you at his house?"
Mara took a shaky breath. The tears spilled over her cheeks. The emotional weight of the past few weeks finally broke her.
"My mother died," Mara whispered, her voice breaking. "She left behind a company called Horizon Corp. It was everything to her. But my father made terrible investment decisions, and the cash flow completely broke. We are heavily in debt. So, my stepmother... she decided to sell me. She took money from Vaughn Croft. If I married him, my family would get a financial bailout."
Dane clenched his fists, hiding his anger. "Is there no other way to save the company?"
Mara wiped her eyes, a tiny spark of desperate determination flashing in her gaze. "There is. I just need a miracle. Mercer Group, the biggest company in the city, is looking for partner companies right now. If I can secure just one small contract from them, I can resolve the debt. With Mercer Group as my backer, Vaughn Croft wouldn't dare touch me openly. And I can save my mother's legacy."
Suddenly, Mara's cell phone rang violently on the coffee table. The caller ID flashed Stepmother.
Mara flinched, but she slowly reached out and answered it, putting it on speaker.
"You ungrateful little bitch!" her stepmother's shrill voice screamed through the phone. "Where are you?! Get back here right now and go apologize to Mr. Croft! Without his money, we are ruined!"
Mara's hands shook, but she forced her voice to stay steady. "I am not going back. I will never apologize to that monster. And I won't marry him."
"Then Horizon Corp will go bankrupt tomorrow!" her stepmother shrieked.
"No, it won't," Mara said firmly. "I am going to get the partner contract from Mercer Group. I will save the company myself."
Her stepmother laughed, a cruel, mocking sound. "You? Get a contract from Mercer Group? Don't make me laugh! I am giving you exactly two days. If you don't bring that contract home, I will personally drug you, tie you up, and drag you back to Mr. Croft's bed myself!"
Click. The line went dead. Mara dropped the phone. She wrapped her arms around her knees, trying desperately to hold herself together.
Dane looked at her, his heart filled with deep respect. She was terrified, abused by her own family, and facing impossible odds. Yet, she was still fighting. She was so incredibly brave.
"You can do this," Dane said firmly, his deep voice carrying absolute certainty. "You will get that contract."
Mara looked up at him, deeply moved by his absolute faith in her. A poor student with nothing was the only person in the world who believed in her.
She took a deep breath and stood up. "I have to go. I need to prepare my business proposal immediately. Tomorrow night, Mercer Group is holding a massive banquet to publicly announce their partners. I am going to find their management. I have to fight for this."

Mara trembled violently, but she forced herself to speak. "Leave me alone! I never agreed to marry you!""You didn't have to agree," Vaughn sneered, stepping closer. "Your stepmother and your own father agreed for you. They eagerly took a ten-million-dollar contract from my company in exchange for your body. You belong to me!"Hearing this, Lana burst into cruel laughter from the sidelines."You are so lucky, Mara!" Lana mocked loudly, absolutely thrilled to see her sister suffer. "Vaughn Croft's family is quite wealthy! That is much better than trying to run a business on your own! Just go with him and be a good little pet!"Vaughn stopped. He slowly turned his head toward the sound of Lana's voice. His eyes darkened with absolute, murderous hatred. He remembered the excruciating pain of his bones snapping. Although his underground family was slightly inferior in wealth to the Hayes Family, he was his father's only son. His hands had been completely crippled. He was permanently disab

The blinding white spotlight hit the center of the main stage. The massive banquet hall was completely silent, everyone holding their breath to see the legendary owner of Mercer Group. But it wasn't a mysterious billionaire who stepped into the light. It was Dane.Wearing his cheap, faded clothes, Dane walked slowly and confidently down the aisle, right past the rows of stunned billionaires.Lana gasped, her eyes practically bulging out of her skull. She lunged forward and hissed, "Dane! What the hell are you doing?! Step back! They called for the boss of the company, not a broke beggar like you!"Cade grabbed Dane’s sleeve, trying to aggressively yank him back. "Are you insane?! How dare you pretend to be the boss of Mercer Group in front of everyone? You are going to get us all killed!"Dane easily brushed Cade’s hand away without even looking at him. He completely ignored their frantic whispers and kept walking. As Dane reached the steps to the stage, Paige, the terrifying CEO of M
Chapter 13
The entire banquet hall was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Hundreds of the wealthiest, most powerful people in the city stared at the woman in the tailored white executive suit.Paige stood tall, her presence radiating absolute, terrifying authority. She was the public-facing head of Mercer Group. Every single massive financial decision, every billion-dollar acquisition, and every single contract in the company required her personal signature. When Manager Kirk saw her face, all the blood instantly drained from his body. His knees began to shake uncontrollably.Kirk was just a mid-level manager who owned a fraction of a percent of shares. Compared to Paige, he was nothing more than an ant. He had absolutely no idea she was going to attend the banquet tonight. She rarely appeared at these public events."P-President Paige," Kirk stuttered, his voice cracking. He immediately lowered his head, not daring to look her in the eye. "I... I didn't know you would be here."Paige ignored h
Chapter 12
Dane demanded the moment the call connected, "Director Paige, is there a mistake in the partner list for today's banquet? I instructed the butler to contact you yesterday to remove Nexus Group."Lana laughed loudly from across the hall. "Who is Director Paige? I've never even heard that name. You're up to your fraudulent tricks again, Dane. Pretending to have connections you don't have."Cade felt something was off. Dane was far too confident. He had a nagging feeling that Dane's presence today boded ill for them.Cade whispered to Lana, "Let's drive him away. He used a fake VIP invitation to get in today, relying on some low-level connection. If we expose his true colors, the boss of Mercer Group will surely applaud us."Lana marched over and found Manager Kirk. "They used fake VIP invitations to get in earlier. Both the second male lead and I witnessed it."Kirk believed them without question. He hated Dane for making his nephew look bad. Kirk immediately called the security guards,
Chapter 11
Mara stepped back, her eyes wide with bewilderment. She could not understand how Lana and Cade were standing inside the exclusive banquet hall. She had just watched the security guards kick them out.Lana strutted forward, her glittering gown catching the crystal chandelier light. She looked at Mara like a hawk looking at an injured mouse."Surprised to see me?" Lana taunted, her voice dripping with venom. "Did you really think a lowly director like Paige could keep me out? We entered with the personal help of Manager Kirk. He is a senior executive at Mercer Group. His authority is infinitely higher than whoever is helping you."Lana crossed her arms, a triumphant smirk on her face. "Manager Kirk already gave us the inside scoop. The massive ten-million-dollar contract tonight will definitely be mine."In reality, Manager Kirk was nothing more than a mid-level pencil pusher. He had secretly peeked at a confidential document on Director Paige's desk earlier that day. He had seen the na

Lana's face burned with extreme embarrassment. She gritted her teeth so hard they nearly cracked. She was the supposedly mighty heir of the Hayes Family; kneeling in the dirt would destroy her reputation forever.Cade quickly stepped in front of Lana, sweating profusely. "Hey, don't be so aggressive," he said nervously to Dane. "It was just a casual remark between friends. Is it really necessary to take it so seriously?"Dane shrugged casually, but his eyes were ice cold. "It doesn't matter to me. I can't physically force you to honor your own bet. But with so many people watching, and so many cell phones recording... your story will definitely be on the front page of the entertainment news headlines tomorrow morning. 'Hayes Family Heir Refuses to Pay Debts.' Sounds catchy."Dane chuckled lightly.Bree respectfully extended her arm toward the glass doors. "Please, sir, miss. Let me invite you inside."Dane placed his hand gently on the small of Mara's back and guided her through the g
