CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

“I don’t think I heard you right, Dylan. Maybe my ears have been blocked by a lot of wax. Did he just say that you know about the Shadows of Retribution?” Lucian said inquisitively, turning to look at Helen who nodded to affirm the words of Dylan who sighed heavily just before Lucian returned his gaze to him with so much shock written all over his face.

“You knew?”

“Yes, Ian. We know everything.” Dylan said calmly, but at that moment, a seed of distrust had been planted i

CHAPTER FORTY-ONE“Who are you? Can I see your face? Maybe it would help me find out whatever it is you are looking for.”“I am faceless, Ian! Even if I appeared in front of you, you would never be able to recognize me. All I want is that which I have longed for, nothing else!”“But I don’t have it! I do not know what you speak of!”“Oh yes, Ian! Yes, you do! You have taken possession of the orb of the Phoenix, and you have killed he who I sent to get it for me!”At that moment, Lucian was able to recall some of the words he heard from Angus before he killed him after their fight.“It’s you.” He said with a whisper without looking at any direction in particular. He paused for a while, attempting for the umpteenth time to get a grip on himself shortly before he sighed heavily and cleared his throat. “You sent the Guild leader to get the Phoenix Root from me?”“Yes, Ian! And he failed woefully. I should have known better than to have trusted him with such a delicate task. Now I am le

CHAPTER FORTYLucian could barely get enough sleep that night, he stayed awake for several hours, thinking about the words that he heard from Dylan and Helen who sounded really desperate.“How come the people suddenly want me to be their leader? What do they really want from me? Am I going to be a good leader? What if I fail? What if I am not able to give them what they want?” He turned to look at his sister who was deeply asleep beside him, and a heavy sigh left his mouth.“How am I going to be able to take care of her if I choose to accept this offer of leadership? She is yet to get the cure she needs, and I don’t even know where to find the elixir.” Lucian stood up from the bed which suddenly fell a bit uncomfortable, and he began to pace around the room, struggling with both the thoughts that lingered in his mind and the fatigue that clung to him.He turned instantly the moment he heard Lena grunt, and when he was certain that she was still fast asleep, he sighed and returned his

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE After a while, Dylan cleared his throat to draw the attention of Lucian who quickly returned his gaze to him, thinking that he was going to say something at once, but it was clear that he was not yet ready to speak even though he seemed ready.“Ian? You know that with Angus dead, we do not have a Guild Master. Even if he were to still be alive, we wouldn’t have allowed him to rule Clachmoor after everything that he has done. That is never going to happen.”“Yes, I am aware of that.” Lucian nodded in agreement, but he refused to let go of the curious thoughts that lingered in his mind while he remained calm.“I am certain that you are aware of the fact that this town must not be without a leader for so long, or we could be standing the chances of losing our freedom to any of the dukes around. With everything that we have heard going on in the palace, our safety is not assured.” Dylan took a break while he left Lucian to assimilate the little he said even though th

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT Dylan was silent for a while and the expression on his face showed that he didn’t know how to tell Lucian what he had in mind. He turned to look at Helen as though he was going to find solace on her face, but he realized that she felt the same way he did, he returned his gaze to Lucian and sighed.“You still haven’t said anything, Dylan. You guys are making me scared! Did anything bad happen? The raiders? Did something happen to them?”“Nothing happened to them, Ian! They are all safe and happy in their homes, all thanks to you.” Dylan responded at once, and that was when Lucian was able to calm his nerves as that was the only thing he could be scared about apart from his sister’s safety.“Okay, what is it? If it’s not the Raiders, then what is it? I need you to talk to me, Dylan. You can’t just continue to remain still as though it’s going to help.”“Alright, Ian. I will tell you what you want to hear. I only hope that you will be willing to listen to me.”“Wha

We know everything.” Dylan said calmly, but at that moment, a seed of distrust had been planted inside Lucian who couldn't believe his ears. The memories of all the near-death experiences he had while in the capital city came crashing into his head, and he couldn’t think of the best response to give to them.“Ian?” Helen tried to move closer to him, but he took two steps backward, looking at her with eyes that displayed the suspicion that lingered in his mind.“We are really sorry that you had to find out this way, Ian. We were not certain of it yet until you left for the capital city. Angu

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX Lucian couldn’t withstand the pain which he had already forgotten about until his sister jumped on him, causing his injuries to remind him that he had been in several fights in a very short time.“Are you okay? What’s wrong?” Lena asked as she jumped down from her brother's body, looking at him while she held onto her torch.“I am fine, Lena. It’s nothing.”“No, you are not. It sounded like you were in pain.” Lena made use of the torch in her hand to take a proper look at Lucian from his face down to his feet without missing any part of his body.“You were in a fight?” Lena looked at his face, and then she moved her left hand closer to it, causing Lucian to whimper as soon as her hands came in contact with his cheek.“Who did this to you? No one said anything about fighting, brother. Was it a trap?”“No, it wasn’t,
