Chapter 20: A pain in his chest
Gavin stood in the middle of the alley, his hands clenched into fists, his heart pounding hard in his chest. He didn’t know why he hadn’t walked away already. Maybe he should have. The sun had completely disappeared from the sky, when Gavin dropped Harrison off. The streets were mostly quiet, painted in orange and blue shadows. As they pulled into the driveway, Harrison let out a dramatic sigh. “Home sweet chaos.” Gavin glanced at the empty front porch. “Your mom’s not home?” “She’s probably off with her pathetic woman’s club,” Harrison said, rolling his eyes. “Last week they met to talk about decorative spoons for a council meeting.” They both laughed and the minute their thunderous laughter died down. Mr. Smith’s voice rang out across the school courtyard. The anger in his voice couldn’t be missed and Gavin couldn’t help but shake his head in anger. “The school must have some idea what’s going on! How does a student just disappear?!” Gavin heard Mr. Smith say to Principal Moore, who looked shaken. Poor Mrs. Moore little did she know she was just being a pawn in Mr. Smith’s little games.
