At the Blackwell family estate, the air itself seemed to hold its breath.

Dickson Blackwell's foot slammed against the marble floor, the sound cracking through the room like a gunshot. His jaw clenched in rage, and his fists clenched at his sides.

"How dare he?" he roared, the words tearing through the room. Every man standing before him flinched, eyes dropping to the floor. No one in that house had seen Dickson Blackwell lose control in over a decade, and now the fear of it filled the room like smoke.

"Mr. Blackwell." Camila's voice shook as she stepped forward, wringing her hands. "I did everything I could to bring her to you. That man, Dennis, he wouldn't listen to reason. He broke my son's arm right in front of me."

Dickson's gaze shifted to Ethan, whose arm hung stiff in a fresh bandage, his face pale from pain and humiliation both.

"Mr. Blackwell," Victor added quickly, eager to seem useful, "my mother has already disowned Doris. She and her husband have nowhere left to run. I'm certain they'll try to flee the city soon."

"I want them brought to me alive." Dickson's voice dropped low, which was somehow more terrifying than the shouting. "They will pay for what happened to my son."

He turned away from them, his mind replaying the call he'd received hours earlier, his head butler, voice trembling, explaining that Sean had been dragged out of his own wedding reception by soldiers under Admiral Gregory's command and beaten so badly he'd been rushed into surgery. Dickson had made calls. He even offered money, but None of it moved Gregory or the uniform behind him.

He knew someone had orchestrated it. Someone had called Gregory there in the first place.

And Dickson knew exactly who.

"Dennis." He said the name like poison on his tongue. "He humiliated my family in front of four hundred guests. He brought the military down on my son's own wedding. Because of him, my son is lying in a hospital bed fighting for his life." His eyes burned. "I don't care what it costs. Find him! Find them both."

He turned to the man standing silently near the door, his head butler, Gideon, who had served the family for thirty years and had learned long ago never to ask questions when Dickson's voice dropped this low.

"A hundred million dollars," Dickson said. "Put it on Dennis's head. Get every killer, every hired gun, and every assassin you can find in this city or outside it. I want them hunting him. But bring him back alive. I want to watch him breathe while I take his heart out of his chest myself."

Gideon's expression didn't change, though something behind his eyes flickered. "And the wife, sir?"

"Bring her to me as well. She is my son's wife; she'll remain his wife until the day she dies, however long or short I decide that is." Dickson's mouth curled into something cruel. "And the boy. Bring the boy too. I want that man to watch his son suffer before I finish him."

"Consider it done, Mr Blackwell." Gideon bowed low, already pulling his phone from his jacket as he turned and left the room, dialling before the door had even shut behind him.

Camila's eyes went wide at the number still hanging in the air. A hundred million dollars. Her gaze slid sideways to her sons, something shifting behind her expression, quiet and cold, replacing the fear.

"Mr. Blackwell," she said carefully, "with your permission, my sons and I would like to take our leave. Ethan needs rest."

Dickson's eyes cut to her, sharp as glass. "Leave if you wish. But don't think for one second about running from this city. I will find you wherever you go." He let the silence stretch, savouring it. "The only way any of you leave my sight for good is if you bring me that woman and her husband."

Camila's throat tightened, but she nodded quickly, pulling her sons toward the door before Dickson changed his mind about letting them go at all.

---

That night, the three of them sat around the heavy mahogany desk in Camila's study, the silence between them thick with fear.

"Mom, what do we do?" Victor's leg bounced under the table, restless, unable to sit still. "Dickson Blackwell isn't a man you cross. He said we can't leave the city, not until Doris and her husband are found."

"Maybe we should just run," Ethan muttered, cradling his broken arm against his chest, his voice tight with pain and something close to panic. "What if they've already left the city? We could be waiting here for nothing while Dickson decides we're not worth the trouble anymore."

Camila said nothing. Her eyes were fixed on some distant point on the desk, her mind working through calculations neither of her sons could follow.

Then her hand slammed flat against the wood, hard enough to make both boys jump.

"Enough!" she snapped, her voice cracking through the room. "The two of you sit here whining like children while a hundred million dollars sits right in front of us, and neither of you can think of a single way to claim it?"

Victor and Ethan exchanged an uneasy glance.

Had she forgotten already?

Had she forgotten how Dennis had thrown both of them across the room without breaking a sweat? How Ethan's arm had snapped like a dry branch under a man who hadn't even looked angry while he did it?

"What exactly are you saying, Mom?" Ethan asked carefully, lifting his bandaged arm as if to remind her.

Camila dragged a hand through her hair, and when she looked up again, there was something colder in her eyes than either of her sons had seen before.

"If neither of you can think," she said quietly, "then I will. I have an idea. But we need to move before every assassin in this city gets there first, because that money belongs to this family, not to some stranger with a knife for hire."

Victor leaned forward, brow furrowed. "What idea?"

Camila's lips curved, the fear from an hour ago folding itself away into something far more dangerous.

She didn't answer right away. She let the silence sit between them, heavy and cold.

Rain lashed the roof of Doris's apartment that morning; a dark stain had spread across the ceiling in the corner of the bedroom, and water dripped steadily into a bucket Doris had placed there earlier.Dennis stood beneath it, watching the water fall, drop by drop, into the bucket already half full."How long has this been happening?" he asked, without turning around.Doris wrapped her arms around herself, standing in the doorway. "A few weeks now, I've called someone to fix it twice. But everytime they said they'd come and never did. I told the landlord myself, more than once. He kept saying he'd send someone, but It just kept getting worse."Dennis pressed two fingers against the swollen patch of ceiling, and watched it sag under the pressure like it might give way completely. His jaw tightened, and he shook his head."You've been living like this with Liam." His voice was filled with irritation "I didn't have a choice, Dennis. I couldn't afford anywhere else, and I couldn't leave

  • Chapter 5 - Faked Explanation

Dennis took a slow breath, and for the first time that night, his voice softened enough for the walls he kept around himself to crack, just slightly."Doris, something happened after everyone thought I died," he began. "I wasn't dead. I had to disappear. I was hurt badly enough that I lost my memory for a while. I didn't want to come back to you and Liam broken, half a man who couldn't even remember his own name. So I stayed away until I could stand on my feet again."Doris's eyes went wide, her lips parting, but no sound came out. Six years of grief, and the reason was this simple, this human."While I was recovering," he continued, "there was a fire at a mall. I saw a little girl in a wheelchair, trapped, no one going near her because the flames were spreading too fast. I got her out." He paused. "Turned out she was Hector Beaumont's daughter."Doris pressed a hand to her mouth, with her eyes still fixed on Dennis."When word reached him, he found me. Insisted I come to his house. T
