Dennis took a slow breath, and for the first time that night, his voice softened enough for the walls he kept around himself to crack, just slightly.

"Doris, something happened after everyone thought I died," he began. "I wasn't dead. I had to disappear. I was hurt badly enough that I lost my memory for a while. I didn't want to come back to you and Liam broken, half a man who couldn't even remember his own name. So I stayed away until I could stand on my feet again."

Doris's eyes went wide, her lips parting, but no sound came out. Six years of grief, and the reason was this simple, this human.

"While I was recovering," he continued, "there was a fire at a mall. I saw a little girl in a wheelchair, trapped, no one going near her because the flames were spreading too fast. I got her out." He paused. "Turned out she was Hector Beaumont's daughter."

Doris pressed a hand to her mouth, with her eyes still fixed on Dennis.

"When word reached him, he found me. Insisted I come to his house. Told me I'd saved the only thing in his life that mattered to him, and that I'd have one favour from him, whenever I wanted it, no questions asked." Dennis looked down at his hands. "I never used it, not once. Not even when I needed money, or shelter, or help finding my way back to you. But tonight, when Liam said he was hungry and I saw how that woman looked at us. I thought about it. I wanted my son to know what it felt like to be treated like he mattered somewhere in this world, so I called it in."

Doris stared at him for a long moment, the truth settling into her chest slowly, like water finding the cracks in stone. It was simple and believable. It explained everything without answering the question that still gnawed at her.

But she let it go, for tonight.

"So you used it for Liam," she said quietly.

"For both of you," he answered, meeting her eyes.

She didn't push further. Instead, she looked over at their son, standing a few feet away beside Hector, giggling at something the older man had said, looking more like himself than he had in weeks.

---

They arrived at Doris's old apartment a while later, the small, modest place she'd kept before Sean tore her out of her own life and dropped her into his gilded cage.

Liam was asleep within minutes, worn out from the night's chaos and the biggest meal of his life. Doris tucked a blanket around him and pressed a kiss to his forehead before joining Dennis by the kitchen counter.

They talked in low, easy voices, nothing heavy, nothing about wars, admirals or what happened. Just small things: the apartment, what Liam liked to eat for breakfast. It was the first quiet, ordinary moment either of them had had in years.

Dennis excused himself to the restroom.

That was when the front door exploded open, slamming into the wall hard enough to crack the plaster.

Doris screamed, jerking backwards, her hand flying to her chest. Three figures stormed into the apartment, and when her eyes adjusted, her stomach dropped straight through the floor.

Her stepmother, Camila. Her stepbrothers, Victor and Ethan.

"Mom?" Doris's voice shook with confusion. "What are you doing here? It's the middle of the night."

Camila's face was a mask of pure fury, her hands curled at her sides. "What did you do?" she spat. "How could you do this to us?"

"I don't know what you're talking about," Doris responded, her eyes scanning the faces of the people before her.

"Don't you dare play innocent with me." Camila's voice cracked into a shriek. "I know what happened. You and Dennis planned it, didn't you? You had Sean beaten within an inch of his life. He's in a coma, Doris. A coma. His father isn't asking for an apology; he wants blood. Our family's blood."

Camilla's eyes were wild now, darting between Doris and the hallway. "And I heard your pathetic husband crawled back from wherever he was hiding. Where is he? The two of you did this together, and now you're going to fix it by handing yourselves over to the Blackwell family before they come for the rest of us."

Doris felt the blood drain from her face. "You want to hand me over to protect yourselves?"

"You brought this on us!" Ethan barked, stepping forward, jabbing a finger toward her. "You think you're the first woman unlucky enough to marry into a family like that? You should've been grateful he even wanted you, knowing you already had a bastard son from some dead loser."

Something cold moved through the room. Dennis stepped out from the hallway, his face unreadable, his eyes locked on Ethan like a man memorising a target, but none of them noticed him yet.

"You were supposed to be the debt payment," Victor snapped, pointing at his half-sister like she was something disposable. "Instead of staying quiet and letting the marriage settle things, you had to go and destroy Sean Blackwell. Do you understand what you've cost this family?"

"You're coming with us," Camila said, voice flat and final. "Grab her."

Victor and Ethan lunged forward, with their eyes red with fury.

Doris stumbled backwards, but there was nowhere to go until there was a blur of motion and both of her stepbrothers were suddenly airborne, crashing into the wall behind them with twin cracks of pain and disbelief.

Dennis stood exactly where they'd been standing a half-second earlier, his expression carved from stone.

"Don't you ever put your hands on my wife again," he said in a low voice, each word deliberate as a blade. "She's not a debt. She's not a bargaining chip for you to hand off whenever it's convenient. I'm back now, and if either of you so much as breathe wrong in her direction, I will end you both."

Camila's eyes darted from her sons crumpled on the floor to the man now standing between them and Doris, fear and fury warring across her face. "He's lost his mind," she hissed. "He attacked my boys. Do you see this? He's a lunatic!"

Ethan staggered to his feet first, rage overtaking whatever sense he had left. He swung a wild kick toward Dennis's ribs.

It never landed.

CRACK.

Ethan's scream tore through the apartment, raw and animal. He collapsed to his knees, cradling his arm at an angle no arm was meant to bend. "My arm! He broke my arm! Mom, he broke my arm!"

Camila stumbled back against the wall. "You attacked my son! Do you understand what you've done? You've offended the Blackwell family and your own wife's family in one night!"

Dennis's jaw tightened. "Doris doesn't belong to your family. She never did. Call her your daughter one more time, and I'll cut out your tongue myself and feed it to your sons, since apparently that's the kind of family you raised them to be. What kind of mother sells her own child to a monster and calls it survival?"

Camila flinched, some deep animal instinct in her recognising the danger radiating off him. Victor backed toward the door, dragging his brother with him, both of them pale with something closer to terror now than anger.

"Doris." Camila's voice cracked, desperate now, pivoting tactics. "You're really going to stand there and say nothing? Fine. Stand with him, then die with him. The Blackwell family is coming for you tonight. I already gave them your location. His men are already on their way. And when they get here, don't you dare come crawling to us for help, because there won't be any."

The words hit Doris like ice water down her spine. Her hands trembled at her sides, but her voice, when it came, didn't waver.

"I'm not going anywhere with the Blackwells," she said. "I'm staying with my husband and my son."

Camila's face twisted with something between rage and heartbreak. "Then hear this, Doris Brennan, as of this moment, you have no family. You are not my daughter. Don't you dare come to my door when the Blackwells arrive. We will not help you, either of you."

Doris opened her mouth, but no words came. There was nothing left to say to a woman who had just confirmed exactly what she'd always suspected: that she had never been family at all, but only leverage.

Dennis let out a short, humourless breath. "Good," he said. "That's the best thing you've ever done for her. She never needed a family that only loved her as a bargaining chip. I can protect her without you." His eyes swept over all three of them, cold and final. "Now get out of my sight, before I decide to send the rest of you to the hospital to keep your son company."

Camila stiffened the moment their eyes met, something in his stare making her believe, instantly and completely, that he meant every word.

Victor hauled Ethan up by his good arm, half-dragging him toward the door. At the threshold, Ethan turned back, tears streaking down his face, fury burning through the pain.

"You're a dead man," he choked out. "I'll come for you. I swear it, I'll come for you."

Then they were gone, and the apartment fell into a heavy silence.

Dennis shut the door and threw the lock. When he turned back around, he found Doris sitting on the couch, her face buried in her hands, her shoulders shaking.

"What are we going to do?" she whispered, not lifting her head. "We don't have money. We don't have soldiers. We don't have anything to fight the Blackwell family with. They own half this city, Dennis. How do we survive this?"

He crossed the room and sat beside her, gently pulling her hands away from her face so he could look at her.

"You don't need to worry," he said quietly. "You have Liam and me. That's enough."

She stared back at him, wanting so badly to believe it, wanting it with everything left in her chest. But the fear was louder than hope right now.

How would two people with nothing fight a man who commanded an empire?

How would they survive a family whose son was lying in a hospital bed because of her?

What power does her husband really have, and would it be enough to stand against an army?

The questions circled endlessly, with no answers in sight. She said nothing. She simply leaned into him, resting her head against his shoulder, and let the silence hold her instead.

Rain lashed the roof of Doris's apartment that morning; a dark stain had spread across the ceiling in the corner of the bedroom, and water dripped steadily into a bucket Doris had placed there earlier.Dennis stood beneath it, watching the water fall, drop by drop, into the bucket already half full."How long has this been happening?" he asked, without turning around.Doris wrapped her arms around herself, standing in the doorway. "A few weeks now, I've called someone to fix it twice. But everytime they said they'd come and never did. I told the landlord myself, more than once. He kept saying he'd send someone, but It just kept getting worse."Dennis pressed two fingers against the swollen patch of ceiling, and watched it sag under the pressure like it might give way completely. His jaw tightened, and he shook his head."You've been living like this with Liam." His voice was filled with irritation "I didn't have a choice, Dennis. I couldn't afford anywhere else, and I couldn't leave

Camila's voice shook as she stepped forward, wringing her hands. "I did everything I could to bring her to you. That man, Dennis, he wouldn't listen to reason. He broke my son's arm right in front of me."Dickson's gaze shifted to Ethan, whose arm hung stiff in a fresh bandage, his face pale from pain and humiliation both."Mr. Blackwell," Victor added quickly, eager to seem useful, "my mother has already disowned Doris. She and her husband have nowhere left to run. I'm
