Jordan stared at him in silence.

The smirk on his face stiffened.

His eyes searched Chay's face, the scar, the blood, the cold eyes.

"...You're really... him."

His eyes slowly swept over Chay from head to toe. He could see the torn military combat uniform, he caught the dried blood, the fresh wounds and his blood stained knife.

Then his gaze returned to the familiar scar running across the left side of Chay’s face.

His pupils narrowed. “So…” he muttered to himself. “You didn’t die.”

Silence.

Then Jordan suddenly laughed. Not because he found it funny, but because the absurdity of it excited him.

“Hahaha…”

“I’ll be damned! The dead actually came home?” He asked, his grin widening.

Chay didn’t answer

CRACK.

The leader’s neck twisted violently in Chay’s hand. His body instantly went limp and Chay released him, his corpse collapsing beside Nana.

There was definitely no way Chay was going to spare him after he killed Nana.

Only then did Chay slowly raise his eyes and completely face Jordan.

Recognition flickered through them.

Jordan Jones.

Ten years had changed him.

The immature youth Chay remembered had become a tall, broad-shouldered man dressed in a tailored charcoal suit.

Luxury watch. Perfectly styled hair. Arrogance still sat proudly on his face. Only now, it carried the confidence of someone born into overwhelming power.

He was the heir of the Jones household and son of Felix Jones, the man whose name alone terrified half the city.

Felix Jones was one of Kent’s most feared businessmen and underground rulers. He was the head of the Jones Household and an old friend of John Whitney.

And Jordan was just as obnoxious. Just as cruel and just as evil.

Jordan clicked his tongue. “You really should’ve stayed dead, you know,” he took a step forward and stopped, his hands in his pockets.

“You escaped the slave market once. You won’t escape twice.”

Beneath his bravado, Jordan still couldn’t hide his curiosity.

“But, how?” he asked.

“I watched them drag you away in chains.”

“My father said you wouldn’t survive a month. In fact, we received news that you were dead, in what? Two… three days?”

“And yet…” he spread his hands.

“Here you are.”

Chay’s face remained expressionless.

Jordan frowned. He had no fear, no panic whatsoever. “Interesting.”

“You know…” he smiled. “I’ve suddenly got a better idea.” He slowly began pacing.

“If I kill you here… my father will be pleased. I mean, uncle John will also be pleased. But…”

He stopped.

“…if I take you back alive…” His grin widened, “Oh… what a wonderful surprise that would be.”

He let out a dark chuckle.

“I can’t wait to see the look on Uncle’s John’s face,” his smile widened as he imagined it. “I can’t wait to see the look on everyone’s faces.. no…no… do you know what I can’t wait to see most?”

He paused.

“Uncle John putting an end to you for the last time.”

He laughed hard. “I’m sure my father will love that.”

Chay had said nothing to him so far but observed and listened. But hearing Jordan insinuate John Whitney killing him made him chuckle.

And that upset Jordan.

‘What is funny?’ He wondered. Chay should be scared, he should be shaking and trembling in fear, in fact, he should be on his knees begging him to spare him…

not smiling.

Jordan clicked his tongue and shook his head. “Take your time, this will be the last time you smile anyway.”

He acted as though he was unbothered but he desperately wanted to spite Chay. He hated the look of the smile on his face.

“Oh..” Jordan smiled viciously. “Claire certainly forgot you the moment you disappeared. It was as though you never existed. She bloomed and kept glowing.”

“She and my brother couldn’t be happier,” he teased.

Asher Jones, Chay’s best friend, was also Jordan’s brother.

“Did you hear that they got married?” He gladly continued. “They’ve built a beautiful family, and that little baby from the naming ceremony? She has grown into the sweetest little girl.”

He smirked. “Funny how she resembles Asher more and more every year.” He stepped forward slowly, his glittering eyes locking Chay’s, “You know, you really were pathetic.”

“Your wife was sleeping with your best friend right under your nose, and you never noticed,” he shook his head dramatically. “I suppose stupidity really is incurable.”

“But perhaps it was fate? Claire and Asher are made for each other. You? You were never worthy of her.”

Chay remained silent, unshaken and unbothered. He didn’t care. The pain of those memories had been long buried away.

Jordan’s smile slowly weakened. Why wasn’t Chay reacting?

He desperately wanted a reaction from Chay so badly. Then…

His eyes drifted towards Nana’s body and a cruel idea entered his mind.

“Oh, that old bitch,” he pointed lazily at Nana.

Chay’s brows furrowed.

“You should’ve seen her,” Jordan laughed. “She crawled to Uncle John’s villa once, actually got on her knees desperately begging him to save you.”

“But… of course, we threw her out like garbage.” He snorted, “obviously after giving her a good beating.”

Chay’s fingers slowly tightened around the combat knife in his hand.

Jordan noticed, and his grin returned.

‘There it is,’ he thought to himself, his heart filling with satisfaction.

“She looked like a pathetic old fool but the bitch kept crying for–“

“Shut the fuck up!” Chay’s voice was quiet. Deadly quiet.

Jordan’s eyes lit up.

Finally, he had struck a nerve.

“Oh? I finally got your attention?” He laughed. “You’ll like this even more.”

“Molly’s already on her way to Lumen village… the same place you were sold. How iconic of Uncle John to give both of y’all the same fate.”

“They’re probably stripping her already. Maybe she’s screaming and calling on her dead parents as we speak, who knows?”

Chay slowly lowered his head, his breathing growing deeper. He was no longer listening. Every word Jordan spoke, only added another name to the list of people Chay would bury.

Jordan mistook the silence for defeat. He smiled triumphantly. “You made a grave mistake, Chay. Why come back? You should’ve remained in the godforsaken place you hid all these years”

He casually waved two of his fingers. “Break every bone in his body. But, don’t kill him.”

He looked Chay dead in the eye. “I want whatever’s left of you chained like a dog.”

“I’m taking you to my father…”

“…as a gift.”

  • Chapter 2: Her final promise

Nana laid crumpled on the cold wooden floor, her frail body twisted at unnatural angles. Almost every bone in her body had been shattered. They sure had taken their time. Blood seeped from countless wounds, staining her once neat woolly clothes a deep red before pooling beneath her. It was not a good sight to behold. Every breath felt like a blade carving through her chest. Her vision blurred as tears mixed with blood trickled down her wrinkled face. Anyone with a normal heart who saw Nana’s state would’ve shed tears. She was merely an innocent, frail old lady. She had lived a very long life, but she never imagined it would end like this. Six huge men surrounded her. One of them, a towering brute with a shaved head, a braid tail dangling behind his head, and his tattooed fists wrapped around a thick steel club, looked down at her with a hint of pity. “You know,” he clicked his tongue, rolling his shoulders. “I almost feel sorry for you, old lady.” He rested the club against h
