They dragged Rowen outside like he was a piece of garbage.
"You dare to upset someone as powerful as Fred? I see you really do have a death wish!" They glared at Rowen.
They expected him to shiver and grovel. They expected his knees to hit the ground with a thud, his legs wobbling beneath him as he begged for mercy like his life depended on it—which, in truth, it did.
Instead, he stood perfectly still. His breathing remained calm, unhurried, and his eyes were steady, regarding them as though they were the ones beneath contempt.
It caused Joel, the gang leader, to expel a sharp breath from his lungs in hot, explosive bursts.
His face twisted and his hands curled tightly into fists.
He stepped forward while the other men held Rowen in place, closing the distance until Rowen could feel the heat of his stale breath against his skin.
"You've really got some nerve for someone who's about to die, haven't you! We are the Trinity Bloodhounds, and our torture methods are among the most feared in this city.
If you really think you're some tough guy who's going to walk away from this easily, then you had better think again!" His tongue clicked and spittle sprayed across Rowen's face as he spoke.
It was revolting.
Rowen's expression remained blank, almost as though he were staring at something he had stepped in.
"I'm not acting tough. I just know my worth," Rowen responded calmly.
His words were first met with silence, after which a burst of laughter tore through the air.
Joel's gold teeth caught the light as his mouth stretched wide, his hands pressed against his stomach as he roared with unrestrained amusement.
"You know your worth?"
The others fell silent the instant he stopped laughing, not daring to push further, well aware of their leader's explosive temper.
"You must be out of your mind talking about worth. You're nothing but a washed-up nobody, a pathetic fool who got dumped by his girl for someone with more power and standing—someone actually worth her time—and you dare to claim worth?
Fred knows the most powerful men in this city, men whose names alone would make you lose your nerve. That's the man you chose to offend!"
Rowen scoffed, and everyone in the alley instantly froze as a drop of saliva landed on Joel's face.
Their breath caught in their throats and their bodies tensed on Rowen's behalf, knowing what he was about to endure.
They all knew Joel's most sacred rule—that no one dared to spit on him.
"Consider yourself dead!" he snarled, and the rest of the gang cracked their knuckles, falling into step behind their leader.
They were ready to attack and tear Rowen apart. Afterward, they planned to scatter his remains across the city as a warning.
"You wouldn't dare touch me." Rowen's arms folded across his chest.
He delivered the words with such certainty, and the weight of his composure was enough to make even the air around them feel different.
"What did you just say?" the gang leader demanded, his expression darkening in a way that seemed to drop the temperature by several degrees.
"I said you wouldn't dare touch me. You don't want to know what will follow."
The air grew thick and still, every man's breath catching in their dry throats.
Thought after thought hammered through their minds as they watched Rowen defy their leader twice over—first by spitting on him, then by having the audacity to issue a threat.
"He's as good as dead."
Then Joel laughed. The sound startled everyone, and the members joined in almost immediately, though none could afford to provoke him further at this point.
"What are you going to do, you worthless nobody? Everyone already knows you're pathetic, so what exactly is your plan here?
Call in a sniper to knock me off? Who do you honestly think is coming to save you? Even the president and the mayor would step back from this fight!"
"I know someone."
Joel's expression hardened and a sharp sound escaped his throat. To Rowen, the man was nothing more than an arrogant and powerless oversized rat.
"I know Hagen," Rowen said.
The gang members erupted into laughter. The name meant nothing to them. If the man were truly powerful, they would have heard of him—assuming Rowen even knew anyone with enough influence to pull him out of this situation.
But Joel wasn't laughing.
The color drained from his face and his jaw dropped open, hanging slack as though the muscles had simply given way.
When he spoke, his voice had dropped to something low and quiet, but it carried far more weight than any of his shouting had.
"How do you know Hagen?" he growled.

Rowen almost snorted. Everyone had been trying to play his family name these days.It was getting ridiculous. Every bottom-feeder in the city thought they could throw the Hart name around like some magic badge that would solve all their problems and make them untouchable. Like saying it three times would summon some kind of protection they had never earned.Despite the pressure and the fact that no one was helping, Van's face remained impossibly calm as she pushed his arm away. There was something about her composure that stood out in all this chaos. Even with everyone else shrinking back and pretending not to see what was happening right in front of them, she kept her spine straight."I only came here, Mr. Vince, because you said you could help—not because I wanted to have anything to do with you!" she protested strongly. And the man only flashed an even stronger smile that caused Rowen's stomach to turn.It was the kind of smile that belonged in dark alleys, not in the middle of the

"What's there to hear? My first loyal dog gave me that to wear before she left the country. And my second loyal dog brought the same thing. Seems you both had something in common—being thieves—or you were just a player." She laughed. Those words rang deep inside Rowen's head, and his temples throbbed. It wasn't from rage, pain, or disappointment. He couldn't even place what it was—just an ancient, hollow twist in his stomach that set every part of his body on fire.Burning so intensely that his eyes turned bloodshot. Now the truth lay bare before him.All this time he had stayed despite Emma's abuse because he believed he was repaying her for saving his life during that crash that took his mother's life—when she had hidden him with a kiss as the assassins attacked, when she had stopped his bleeding wound.Back then, he had seen her as his savior, someone he would do anything for. All this while, it turned out he had been completely wrong.Rowen's hands tightened at his sides as the re
Chapter 7: The Revelation
"You thought I wouldn't find out the truth, didn't you? You stole this from the Hart family just to impress me.I never thought in my life that any person was capable of sinking so low. Clearly, I was dead wrong!" she shrieked."If you didn't have money to get something, you could have always asked me for help, Rowen. You know I don't bite. Besides, with your ex warming my bed, I'd do anything for you now," Fred added, a crooked smile tugging at the corners of his lips.Rowen couldn't suppress his look of contempt, directed at both of them for their breathtaking hypocrisy. He didn't bother explaining himself. His face remained cold and unreadable as he stared at Emma, his gaze seeming to drop the temperature in the room."Give it back to me so I can leave. We don't have any business with each other anymore, and I don't owe you any explanation," he responded.Emma's features twisted into something venomous."How dare you?""Do you think walking away will help you in this matter? For a few moments, neither of them could speak. The echo of Mr. Kane's words continued replaying in their minds. Then Emma's teeth ground together."That bastard," she hissed."No wonder he held on to it like it was so important. He must have stolen it from the Hart family and given it to me. Does he have any idea how much trouble this could bring down on me?" Her voice sharpened with rising panic."You're right. There's no way that ring truly belongs to him, and it could cause serious problems. The Hart family is the most powerful in the city and beyond. We cannot afford to get on their bad side."Emma's expression shifted, fear bleeding into her features as the implications crashed over her."What do we do?" Her voice wavered, her words breaking into anxious fragments.Fred smiled as though the matter were trivial."Fortunately for you, I know the Hart heir personally. I can easily speak to him and smooth things over. Then we'll have Rowen dragged in to beg and answer for what he's

Fear spread through the eyes of the men standing around as they watched their master shaken to his core by the mere mention of a name, for the first time in his life.Joel wasn't scared of anyone and never had been, yet this single name was enough to rattle him completely. There was no question it had to belong to someone extraordinarily powerful. But the question was how someone like Rowen could possibly know someone like that."Tell me, how do you know Hagen?" he demanded."Does it matter?""Exactly!" Joel let out a sharp, dismissive breath."There's no way you know Hagen. You're just throwing names into the air and got lucky!"The members nodded in agreement. That had to be the only explanation.
