The air in the hallway of the Thorne residence was thick, not just with the scent of old wood and the lingering aroma of dinner, but with the suffocating weight of five years of unsaid words.

Shane Cross stood perfectly still, his frame nearly filling the narrow entrance. For a man who had commanded legions across frozen tundras and scorched deserts, who had looked into the eyes of death a thousand times without blinking, he found his breath hitching. In front of him stood Tessa Thorne, his wife. They had been married in a whirlwind, a flash of passion and shared dreams, only for Shane to depart for the front lines almost immediately after the ceremony.

At the time, he was a mere Grunt, driven by a sense of duty and a need to prove his worth. He had promised to return, but the theater of war is a greedy master. The five years that followed were a void of communication, a black hole where Shane had ascended to become The Sovereign, while Tessa was left to wither in the judgmental shadows of Harbor City.

"Shane?" Tessa whispered again, her voice a fragile thing that seemed ready to shatter. Her eyes, usually sharp and clear, were clouded with a turbulent mix of relief, fury, and profound sorrow.

"I told you he was a Bad Omen!" Lorraine Thorne barked, shattering the fragile moment. She stepped between them, her face contorted in a sneer that highlighted every bitter line on her face. "Look at him, Tessa! He disappears for five years, leaves you to fend for yourself while our family business, Thorne Industries, is systematically dismantled by the vultures of the Vance Syndicate, and now he has the gall to show up at our door with a Sterling Bastard in tow!"

"Mom, please," Tessa said, her voice gaining strength, though she didn't look away from Shane.

"Don't 'Mom' me! You were the most sought-after debutante in Harbor City. You could have married into the Five Dynasties! Instead, you chose this... this deserter. And then, because of his 'friendship' with that failure Julian Sterling, you threw away twenty thousand dollars of our emergency funds. You handed it to a dead man walking!" Lorraine turned her venomous gaze back to Shane. "Do you have any idea what that cost us? We are a joke in the Financial District. Debt collectors call us every hour. We are on the Point of No Return, Shane, and it's because of the company you keep."

Shane remained silent, his heart tightening. He had known the Vance Syndicate was ruthless, but he hadn't realized their reach had extended to strangling the Thornes simply out of spite for a small act of charity. Twenty thousand dollars—a pittance to the Five Dynasties, but a lifeline for a family like the Thornes.

"Pumpkin," Shane said softly, looking down at Lily, who was trembling violently behind his leg. He looked back at Tessa, his eyes dark with a promise of retribution. "I didn't know the extent of the damage. I didn't know your kindness to Julian had cost you so much."

"You didn't know because you weren't here!" Tessa finally stepped forward, her eyes brimming with tears. "I sat in this house every night for eighteen hundred days, Shane. I watched the news, praying I wouldn't see your name on a casualty list. I defended you when the neighbors called you a coward who ran away. And when Julian came to me, crying, holding this little girl... I saw you in him. I saw the man you claimed to be. So yes, I gave him the money. And yes, the Vance Syndicate took everything we had left because of it."

Shane’s aura shifted. The cold, calculated mask of The Sovereign slipped back into place. The temperature in the hallway seemed to drop, and even the abrasive Lorraine felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to take a step back.

"I am back now," Shane said, his voice a low, terrifying hum. "And I promise you this: those who looked down on you will kneel at your feet. Those who dared to strip Thorne Industries of its dignity will beg for the chance to give it back. I will make the Financial District bleed for every tear you shed."

"More empty promises!" Lorraine scoffed, though her voice wavered. "You're a soldier, Shane. A nobody. You think you can take on the Five Dynasties with a rifle and a few war stories? They own the police, the banks, and the Proconsul himself. Now, take that little Bastard and get out before the Vances see your car and finish us off for good!"

Shane didn't argue. He saw the exhaustion in Tessa’s eyes, the way her shoulders slumped under the weight of five years of struggle. He knew that his presence here, with Lily, was a lightning rod for danger that the Thornes were currently too weak to handle.

"She is not a Bastard," Shane said, his voice as sharp as a bayonet. "She is Lily Sterling, and she is the daughter of a man who died with more honor than this entire city possesses."

He looked at Tessa one last time. "I will not bring more trouble to your doorstep tonight. I have things to settle. But I will be back. And when I return, the world will look very different."

Without waiting for a response, he turned and led Lily back toward the street. Behind him, he heard the door slam shut, and the muffled sound of Tessa finally breaking into sobs.

The drive back to the Hamptons was silent. The Hamptons was an exclusive enclave of lakeside villas that Scarlett Byrne had secured for Shane’s temporary headquarters. It was a fortress disguised as a playground for the rich, surrounded by hundreds of yards of artificial shoreline and high-security fencing.

"The Sovereign," Scarlett said, her hands steady on the wheel as they glided through the gates. "The move into the villa is complete. We have a secure line, and Knox is currently deep-diving into the financial records of the firms that targeted Thorne Industries over the last ninety days."

"Good," Shane replied. "I want names. Not just the families, but the middle-managers, the bankers who froze their credit, the suppliers who cut them off. Every single person who kicked them while they were down."

"Understood."

They arrived at the villa—a masterpiece of modern architecture, all glass and stone. Inside, the decor was understated but spoke of immense, quiet power. It was the kind of luxury that didn't need to scream.

As they entered the foyer, Lily looked around, her eyes wide. She looked like a small, lost bird in a cathedral. "Uncle Shane... that lady... she's nice. She helped my Daddy when everyone else was mean."

Shane knelt down, his expression softening instantly. "She is the best person in the world, Lily. And she was right to be angry. I was away for a long time."

"Is she going to be my Mommy?" the girl asked, her voice hopeful but hesitant.

Shane felt a pang in his chest. "I hope so, Pumpkin. I hope so. But first, I have to make things right." He noticed her rubbing her eyes. "Are you hungry?"

The girl’s stomach gave a loud, treacherous growl. She blushed and nodded.

"Go wash up. I’ll make us something to eat."

In the kitchen, Shane found a strangely therapeutic peace in the act of cooking. He donned a simple apron, his movements in the kitchen as efficient and lethal as they were on the battlefield. He began to prepare a meal—four dishes and a savory soup. As he sliced the meat with surgical precision, his mind drifted back to his youth in Harbor City.

He remembered the days before the military, when he and Julian were just two kids with nothing but their ambitions. He remembered a time when a bully from a wealthy family had cornered him behind the school. Julian hadn't hesitated; he had stepped in, taking hits meant for Shane, refusing to back down until the teachers arrived. Julian had shared his lunch every day when Shane's father lost his job. He had shared his dreams of building Sterling Corp into a force for good.

I survived the trenches because of the strength you gave me, Julian, Shane thought, his grip tightening on the kitchen knife. And now, you're gone. And I'm making dinner for your daughter while your killers drink champagne.

An hour later, the table was set. The aroma of braised pork and fresh vegetables filled the room. Lily, who had likely not had a proper meal since her father's death, sat at the table with her hands folded, looking at the food as if it were a miracle.

"Eat up," Shane said, placing a generous portion of the pork over her rice. "You need to grow big and strong."

The girl ate with a quiet intensity that was heartbreaking to watch. Shane barely touched his own food, content to watch her.

Once dinner was finished and the dishes were cleared, Shane spent an hour watching cartoons with her. It was a surreal juxtaposition—the most feared warlord in The Union sitting on a plush sofa, quietly explaining the plot of a talking-animal show to a four-year-old. Eventually, her head began to loll, and he carried her to a bedroom prepared specifically for her.

He stood by the window of his own study afterward, looking out at the shimmering lights of Harbor City. The neon glow of the Financial District looked like a fever dream in the distance.

"The Sovereign," a voice crackled over his earpiece. It was Knox, his intelligence specialist.

"Report."

"The Falcones are in a state of high alert following the incident at the Zenith Hotel. Vinny Falcone is demanding your head. He’s already reached out to several high-level mercenaries in the Metro City circuit. They haven't linked you to the military yet; they think you're a high-level enforcer for a rival syndicate."

Shane smiled, a cold, predatory expression. "Let them think that. It makes the fall more entertaining. What about the Estate?"

"The auction for the Sterling Estate—the ancestral home—is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM. Vanessa Vance intends to buy it for pennies on the dollar to turn it into a private club for the Five Dynasties."

"Is that so?" Shane’s eyes turned into chips of black ice. "Then tomorrow, we attend an auction."

"Shall I prepare the Sovereign Card, sir?"

"Do it. And tell Scarlett to have the motorcade ready. Tomorrow, we begin the process of taking back what belongs to the Sterlings. We start with the house, and we end with their lives."

Shane turned away from the window. The game had officially begun. The Five Dynasties thought they had won when Julian fell from that roof. They thought they had successfully executed a plan to tie up loose ends. They had no idea that they had simply invited a dragon into their parlor.

From the vantage point of Tessa Thorne, the scene on the carousel was a picture of domestic perfection. There was Shane Cross, the man who had abandoned her for five long years, standing tall and protective next to Lily. The atmosphere inside the Grand Atrium grew thick with a volatile mix of reverence and predatory curiosity. Every neck in the high-society crowd craned simultaneously, their collective gaze locking onto Scarlett Byrne. She stood with a posture that was perfectly vertical, a stark contrast to the slumped, decadent forms of the city's elite. Her military uniform was pressed with razor-sharp precision, and the Major insignia on her shoulders caught the crystalline light of the chandeliers, flashing with a brilliance that seemed to blind those who stared too long."A Major? At her age?" a voice whispered from the back rows, dripping with a mixture of disbelief and envy. "That’s a rank usually reserved for veterans with decades of field experience.""Forget the rank," another man hissed, his eyes wide as he checked his digital ledger. "Eighty million dollars. That is double what the Falcone Group just offered. She didn't just outbid them; she humiliated them."In the middle of the frantic

The atmosphere inside the Falcone Group headquarters in Harbor City was suffocating, thick with a tension that felt like a physical weight against the lungs. Anthony Falcone stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his private office, overlooking the sprawling skyline he had spent decades conquering. Below him, the city hummed with the indifference of millions, but inside this room, time had frozen. His gaze was fixed on the cold, lifeless form of his eldest son, draped in white linen. Anthony did not scream. He did not weep. He simply stared, his eyes twin abysses of freezing malice that promised a reckoning more terrible than any outburst of grief."You’re telling me," Anthony began, his voice a low, guttural rasp that seemed to vibrate the very glass of the windows, "that we still have not uncovered the lineage of this man? This 'Shane Cross'?"The silence that followed was absolute. The senior advisors and bodyguards of the Falcone inner circle exchanged glances, their hearts hamm

The atmosphere within the Grand Ballroom of the Zenith Hotel was one of stifling, curated opulence. Outside, the December winds howled across Harbor City, bringing a frost that could stop a man's heart, but inside, the air was heavy with the scent of expensive lilies, vintage champagne, and the musk of excessive wealth. The socialites and debutantes of the city’s upper crust moved with a feline grace, draped in silks and satins so thin they barely offered a pretense of modesty. They were peacocks preening in a golden cage, their low-cut designer gowns shimmering under the amber glow of the massive crystal chandeliers. Each woman sought to outshine the other, desperate to catch the eye of the titans gathered in the room.Tonight was not merely another gala; it was a coronation. It marked the formal alliance of the Five Dynasties, the power brokers who now held the throat of Harbor City in their collective grip. To be invited by Vanessa Vance was to be acknowledged as a survivor—or a vi
