It was true that Arthur hadn't followed the prison passageway before. But he had heard that sleeping dust was often blown into the air to keep every prisoner unconscious through the night. The reason behind such a practice made Arthur wonder what it truly meant.

Perhaps it existed for people like Asuka, who remained awake even when everyone else had long drifted into sleep. She ought to have been asleep too, because no other inmate seemed to be in their right senses.

"Arthur... are you there?"

It was true that Arthur hadn't followed the prison passageway before. But he had heard that sleeping dust was often blown into the air to keep every prisoner unconscious through the night. The reason behind such a practice made Arthur wonder what it truly meant.Perhaps it existed for people like Asuka, who remained awake even when everyone else had long drifted into sleep. She ought to have been asleep too, because no other inmate seemed to be in their right senses."Arthur... are you there?" she asked, peering weakly through the bars.Arthur walked closer and looked into her ward. She was lying flat on the floor, gore staining the wooden planks in jagged circles. She could no longer stand on her own legs, and no living soul could look upon her without feeling pity."Are... you okay?" Arthur asked quietly.Asuka looked at him through the deep cut beneath her eye. Her jaw trembled before a painful laugh escaped her lips."I'm just trying to catch my breath, Arthur," she said."I'm rea

Seated on one of the royal chairs now, Arthur fought the urge not to look at Raka. She was staring at him, still chewing that berry with deliberate calm, as though silence itself was another language she had mastered."Good evening, Your Highness." Arthur said. But the Empress never answered. It was the third time he had tried to pay reverence to her since he'd been seated, yet she offered no reply. At one point, Arthur argued within himself that perhaps he should never have sat down, even if the maid had instructed him to. It might be that sitting before the Empress without her permission was considered rudeness.Or maybe, he had been stealing glances when he should not have. With that latter thought, Arthur kept his eyes fixed on his legs beneath the table. Silence would be an understatement, because the absolute stillness was slowly crushing every part of him."Look at me." She cooed.Arthur looked at her. Now that he finally had the grace to observe the Empress closely, he realize

Night had descended again. There was hardly any time for reading because Arthur spent the entire day thinking. His thoughts wandered endlessly, searching for a way to flee the ship. Luck had finally smiled upon him, and he now possessed what he had long searched for. The Manifestations should have filled him with excitement, yet he found himself unable to study. Not that the spellbook failed to interest him, and not that studying was unpleasant. The image of Asuka simply refused to leave his mind. It lingered like a stubborn stain. Honestly, if the lady ever gained the slightest freedom, Arthur believed she would drive a pike straight through Deff's throat without a second thought. And yes... all that, and all that.Raka, the Empress, never showed herself during that judgement. She had not emerged during any of the happenings aboard the ship as well. Still, Arthur believed her opinion ought to have mattered. A ruler who remained hidden while another exercised authority in plain sight

Luckily enough, Arthur was able to get back to his quarters after witnessing the murdered guard. Some of the soldiers had already arrived to keep everyone in place, accompanied by Deff himself.Arthur avoided the old man altogether. If Deff truly possessed the strange perception Arthur suspected, he was likely to sense that the spellbook had returned to its rightful owner. It was still difficult to understand what had truly happened. Arthur had seen the murdered guard with his own eyes. It looked as though the man's eyes had been ripped straight from their sockets. The sight alone was enough to haunt anyone.Yet somehow, it remained less disturbing than the pile of slaughtered mermaids lying inside that refuse hall. That dreadful image had refused to leave Arthur's mind. More than anything else, he needed answers.Arthur was just about to devote himself to studying when the horn resounded across the vast sea once again. He groaned quietly and knelt to pull his bag from beneath the old

"Hello, ma'am... I mean, Your Highness." Arthur immediately fell to his knees. He was shocked that he had almost exchanged formalities with the woman in such a manner. That would have been terribly rude, and entirely improper.Instead, the woman laughed softly. Even without daring to study her face for long, Arthur could hear the confidence carried within that laughter. Everything about this woman was surprising in ways he could not properly explain.And... how had she come to know his name?"Look at me, Arthur," she said.Arthur slowly lifted his gaze. Sweat rolled down his temples while his heart pounded so fiercely he almost wished he could flee the chamber."Do you know who I am?" she asked.Arthur quickly shook his head. "I'm afraid not, Your Highness."She laughed again, almost like a gentle purr. For some foolish reason, Arthur liked the sound of it. Her voice was so soothing that he could easily imagine her as a singer."Well, call me Raka. I am the Empress of this ship, and D

"Are you alright, Asuka?" Arthur enquired as the smell of the fish scales reached him.Asuka leaned weakly against the wooden bars while clear liquid streamed down the corner of her mouth. It could have been the sign of unbearable pain... or overwhelming relief. The way she breathed was pitiable, each breath sounding as though it had to force its way through her chest."Are you alright, Asuka?" Arthur asked again."I'm better, Arthur. I can't thank you enough. How do I ever repay your kindness?" Asuka's eyes wandered toward where Arthur stood."What really is wrong with you? I'm sorry, but I'm afraid you are a strange person." Arthur asked sincerely.Asuka laughed softly as she wiped the moisture from her lips. "I am strange, Arthur. I should be. But soon, I will be leaving this prison."Arthur tilted his head. "You will be leaving the prison? Does Deff eventually pardon prisoners who survive starvation like you?"Asuka laughed again. "You've helped me a lot, Arthur. The scales stabi
