“You’re lying!”
Kael Veyron stumbled away from the black door as the voice on the other side repeated his name. The wooden floor beneath his feet trembled violently, while thin fractures spread across the walls of his dormitory. Every protective enchantment in the room had redirected its remaining energy toward the sealed passage beneath him, but the barrier was already beginning to fail.
The voice laughed again, carrying a familiar note of bitter amusement.
“You always say that when you’re frightened.”
Kael felt the blood drain from his face. The voice was not merely similar to his own; it carried the same uneven breathing he remembered from the final battlefield and the slight rasp that appeared whenever his throat became dry. Even its mocking tone sounded painfully familiar.
He had heard himself speak thousands of times throughout his life, but hearing his own voice emerge from something imprisoned beneath the academy made him feel as though his identity were being stripped away.
“Tell me who you are!” he demanded.
“Look at your hand.”
Kael glanced down and discovered that the black symbol beneath his palm had expanded, with curved lines extending toward his wrist. A faint golden glow pulsed between the markings, matching the rhythm of the knocks coming from below.
A translucent message appeared before his eyes.
[WORLD ERROR: EXTERNAL CONNECTION ESTABLISHED.]
[IDENTITY CONFLICT DETECTED.]
[TWO CLAIMS REGISTERED FOR ONE EXISTENCE.]
Kael stared at the final message, struggling to understand its meaning.
“Two claims,” he whispered. “One existence. What does that mean?”
“It means you took something that belonged to me.”
The voice abruptly lost its amusement.
“You stole my body, my name, and my place in the world. Then you ran away and left me to rot in the dark.”
Kael clenched his fists, forcing himself to resist the growing fear.
“I was born eighteen years ago. I have parents, memories, and a life of my own. I know who I am.”
A heavy impact struck the other side of the door, shaking the entire room.
“Do you?” the voice asked. “Then tell me, Kael Veyron, why does your earliest memory begin with a woman screaming beside a burning house? Why can you remember your eighteenth birthday perfectly, but not a single moment from before your fourth year?”
Kael opened his mouth, but no answer came.
He remembered his mother telling him stories about his childhood, along with fragments of a small house, a wooden toy soldier, and the smell of rain coming through a broken window. Those memories had always seemed ordinary, yet something felt wrong whenever he tried to examine them closely.
He could remember his mother describing his first steps, but he could not recall taking them. He knew the name of the village where he had grown up, yet every attempt to picture its streets ended in a blur of unfamiliar shadows.
He had never questioned those gaps because he had assumed that childhood memories naturally faded with time.
Now, that explanation no longer seemed convincing.
“You’re trying to confuse me,” Kael insisted, although his confidence had begun to weaken.
“Of course I am. I have spent years learning what makes you afraid.”
Another impact struck the door, followed by the slow scrape of something dragging across its surface. The sound resembled a long fingernail searching for a weakness in the wood.
“Do you want to know what frightens me, Kael?” the voice asked quietly. “I’m afraid that when this door opens, you’ll finally understand why I begged them to kill you.”
The black symbol on Kael’s palm suddenly burned.
He cried out and stumbled against the desk, knocking over the lamp. Its glass shattered across the floor, plunging half the room into darkness. For one brief instant, the interface changed before his eyes.
[MEMORY FRAGMENT DETECTED.]
[RETRIEVAL ATTEMPT: FORBIDDEN.]
A violent flash of images tore through his mind. He saw a circular chamber, a woman kneeling beside a cradle, and blood spreading across white stone. Then a voice whispered words that made his heart seize.
One body cannot contain two beginnings.
Kael staggered upright, gasping for breath as the images disappeared before he could understand them.
Someone hammered on his dormitory door.
“Kael! Open this door immediately!”
Professor Aldric Thorne.
Relief swept through Kael so suddenly that he almost rushed toward the entrance without thinking. However, just as his fingers touched the handle, the voice beneath the floor spoke again.
“Don’t let him inside.”
Kael froze.
“Why?”
“Because he knows what you are.”
The professor struck the door again.
“Kael, if you can hear me, step away from the floor!”
The conflicting warnings left Kael trapped between two dangerous possibilities. Professor Thorne was an experienced mage who had spent decades studying magic, while the imprisoned stranger claimed to share his identity and knew details about his past that nobody should have known.
Neither had given him a convincing reason to trust them.
When the black door beneath the dormitory began opening wider, Kael made his decision and unlocked the entrance.
Professor Thorne entered carrying a silver staff in one hand and a glowing containment seal in the other. His dark robes were disheveled, and a thin trail of blood ran from his temple to his jaw. Two academy guards followed him, each carrying enchanted restraints designed to suppress dangerous magical abilities.
The professor surveyed the room before raising his staff.
“Move away from the center of the floor.”
Kael obeyed, keeping his injured hand close to his chest.
“What is happening beneath my room?”
Professor Thorne refused to answer immediately. Instead, he pressed the containment seal against the floorboards, releasing blue runes that spread outward into a circular barrier around the source of the knocking.
The fourth knock sounded.
The barrier cracked.
One of the guards swore under his breath, while the professor tightened his grip on the staff.
“How long have you been hearing it?” Thorne demanded.
“Since I returned from the examination hall.”
“And you failed to report it?”
“I thought I was losing my mind.”
“That is not an acceptable reason to conceal a containment breach.”
Kael stared at him in disbelief.
“You knew about the door.”
The professor’s silence confirmed his suspicion.
“You knew something was down there,” Kael continued. “You knew it was connected to me.”
Professor Thorne finally met his eyes.
“I suspected a connection. I did not know it would awaken today.”
“Then tell me what Chamber Zero is.”
The professor’s fingers tightened around his staff.
“It is not a chamber in the ordinary sense. It is a containment structure built beneath the academy long before the current institution existed. Most of its records were destroyed during the founding war.”
“What is being contained?”
Before Thorne could answer, a fifth knock reverberated through the room.
The blue barrier shattered.
Freezing air erupted between the floorboards, extinguishing the remaining lamps. The guards raised their weapons as Professor Thorne thrust his staff forward and shouted an order.
“Containment formation!”
Silver chains burst from the floor and wrapped around the invisible structure beneath them. For a moment, the magical bindings held, but then a pale hand emerged through the darkness.
The slender fingers were covered in black markings identical to the symbol beneath Kael’s skin.
The guards attacked immediately, striking the hand with their enchanted blades. Their weapons passed through it as though they had cut nothing more substantial than smoke.
The hand closed around one of the silver chains, turning every rune on its surface black.
The guard holding the chain screamed as darkness crawled up his arm. Professor Thorne slammed his staff against the floor and severed the magical connection just before the corruption reached the man’s shoulder.
“Fall back!” the professor shouted.
The second guard retreated toward the entrance, but Kael remained motionless, unable to look away from the pale hand. Something about it felt horribly familiar, as though his mind recognized it even while his memories refused to explain why.
The hand slowly turned toward him, its fingers opening in a silent invitation.
“Come closer,” the voice whispered.
Professor Thorne seized Kael by the shoulder and dragged him backward.
“Do not answer it!”
The hand vanished, leaving the broken floorboards trembling beneath their feet. For several seconds, nobody dared to move as the remaining runes flickered across the damaged wood.
Then Kael noticed that the professor was staring at his palm rather than the floor.
“You have the mark,” Thorne whispered.
Kael pulled his hand away.
“What mark?”
“The original seal.”
The professor looked as though he had just discovered that a grave had opened beneath his own house.
“That symbol should not exist outside the containment chamber.”
“Then explain why it appeared when I touched the assessment crystal.”
Thorne’s gaze shifted toward the shattered lamp before he finally answered.
“Because the assessment crystal did not measure your magical capacity. It recognized you.”
Kael felt a knot form in his stomach.
“Recognized me as what?”
The professor looked toward the damaged floorboards.
“As the person the academy was built to contain.”
Kael felt the room tilt around him, but before he could demand another explanation, a loudspeaker crackled to life outside the dormitory.
“All personnel, report to the eastern medical wing immediately. A student has regained consciousness following a severe magical episode.”
Professor Thorne went rigid.
“What student?” Kael asked.
The announcement continued, identifying a female candidate with silver hair and violet eyes who was requesting to speak with Kael Veyron.
Seraphina.
Kael turned toward the entrance, but Professor Thorne caught his arm.
“You must not go near her.”
“She may know something about the door.”
“That is precisely why you must stay away.”
Kael pulled free, his patience finally breaking.
“Everyone keeps telling me what I must not do, but nobody is willing to explain why. I died once because I trusted people who believed they knew what was best for me. I will not repeat that mistake.”
Professor Thorne’s expression changed at the word died. Although the reaction lasted only a moment, Kael noticed the fear that flashed across the older man’s face.
“You remember more than you should,” Thorne murmured.
Before Kael could question him, the professor reached inside his robes and removed a small black key bearing the same three curved lines as Kael’s mark.
“This opens the restricted archive beneath the western tower,” he explained. “If you want answers, look for the records of the First Subject.”
Kael accepted the key cautiously.
“Who was the First Subject?”
The professor hesitated before delivering an answer that made the room feel colder.
“The first person to survive having his existence divided in two.”
The medical wing was almost deserted when Kael arrived. Two guards stood outside Seraphina’s room, but neither attempted to stop him after he displayed Professor Thorne’s key.
Inside, Seraphina sat upright on a narrow bed, her face pale and a thin silver bracelet fastened around her wrist to monitor her magical condition.
She looked relieved when she saw him, but that relief disappeared as soon as her eyes settled on the black mark covering his palm.
“You went to the door,” she whispered.
Kael pulled a chair beside the bed.
“What do you know about it?”
Seraphina glanced toward the observation window before lowering her voice.
“I remember a room beneath the academy. A woman was standing in front of a black door, and someone was crying on the other side.”
“Who was the woman?”
“I don't know.”
“What was she doing?”
Seraphina pressed her fingers against her temples, struggling to organize the fragments of memory.
“She kept saying that the child had to forget. She said the world would destroy him if he remembered who he really was.”
Kael felt his chest tighten.
“What child?”
Seraphina looked directly at him.
“You.”
He searched her face for any sign that she was playing a cruel joke, but he found only confusion and fear.
“That doesn’t make sense,” he said.
“I know.”
“These are dreams. They could mean anything.”
“Then why do I remember your death?”
Kael fell silent as Seraphina reached toward his hand, carefully avoiding the black symbol.
“I saw you on a battlefield. Lucien was standing over you, and you were begging me to help. I wanted to move, Kael. I wanted to save you, but I couldn’t.”
Her voice broke as tears gathered in her eyes.
“Then something looked down from the sky, and I heard a voice say that you had been returned to the wrong beginning.”
Kael slowly withdrew his hand.
“Did you see anything else?”
Seraphina nodded, her expression growing increasingly frightened.
“The woman beside the door turned around.”
“And what did she look like?”
Her violet eyes filled with tears.
“She had your face.”
The room seemed to shrink around him as Kael struggled to process her answer.
Before he could speak, the lights flickered, and the black mark on his palm burned beneath his skin. A message appeared in his vision.
[MEMORY FRAGMENT RESTORED.]
[ORIGINAL SUBJECT: KAEL VEYRON.]
[CURRENT HOST: KAEL VEYRON.]
[STATUS: OCCUPIED.]
A second message appeared beneath the first.
[WARNING: HOST REJECTION IMMINENT.]
Kael staggered away from the bed, barely noticing when Seraphina reached toward him.
The voice from beneath the academy returned, whispering directly into his mind.
“You are finally beginning to remember.”
Kael clenched his teeth as the black symbol spread across his wrist.
“What do you want from me?”
The answer came immediately.
“My life.”
Every light in the medical wing went out, plunging the room into darkness.
Seraphina screamed as something moved beyond the observation window, and Kael heard a sound rising from deep beneath the academy.
A massive door had just slammed open.
