The cold wind carried the sound of shouting long before General Victor Drăghici's coffin reached the memorial platform. It wasn't the grief of mourners. It was the anger of people who had already begun fighting over the future.

Inside Fortress Aegis, death had become an ordinary visitor. Soldiers fell defending the walls. Civilians succumbed to starvation or disease. Children disappeared during supply expeditions beyond the gates. The apocalypse had stripped humanity of the luxury of peaceful farewells.

Even so, no one had expected the strongest commander in Eastern Europe to die in his own bed. General Victor had survived twenty-three years of the zombie apocalypse.

He had endured mutant sieges, famine, betrayals, and endless winters. In the end, however, it was a wasting illness that defeated him. His body had weakened little by little until even the finest doctors inside Fortress Aegis could no longer slow its relentless advance.

Now thousands gathered beneath grey skies to say goodbye. The steel fortress overlooked the ruined city like a mountain forged from iron. Towering concrete walls wrapped around several districts reclaimed from the undead decades earlier.

Guard towers bristled with heavy machine guns, while snipers watched every rooftop beyond the perimeter. Smoke drifted from factory chimneys where survivors manufactured ammunition, repaired armoured vehicles, and recycled anything useful from the fallen world.

It was humanity's greatest sanctuary. Or at least, it had been while Victor Drăghici lived.Ștefan stood beside the coffin in a simple black military coat that had belonged to his father.

The sleeves fit almost perfectly, though the weight of the garment felt heavier than armour. Every crease carried memories of campaigns he had never fought beside the man who wore it.

He stared at the polished wooden lid without blinking. His father had always looked indestructible. Seeing him reduced to a coffin felt impossible.

Nearby, priests murmured the final rites while soldiers lowered their rifles in salute. The ceremonial gunfire echoed against the fortress walls, startling birds that scattered into the dark clouds gathering overhead. No one applauded. No one spoke. Yet beneath that solemn stillness, whispers flowed through the crowd like poison.

"He's too young."He has no military record."General Victor should've named someone else."We're doomed if the boy takes command."

Each murmur carried enough volume to ensure Ștefan could hear it. He heard every word. He answered none of them.

His father had often warned him that fear transformed ordinary people into desperate ones. Desperate people looked for certainty, even if that certainty wore the face of a tyrant. Across the square, Colonel Adrian Varga watched everything unfold with unreadable eyes.

Tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in an immaculate officer's uniform, Adrian projected the confidence of someone born to command. A jagged scar crossed one side of his face, earned during the Siege of Bucharest years ago. Many soldiers admired him. Others feared him.

Victor had trusted him. That realisation stung more than anything else. When the funeral rites concluded, an elderly council member stepped toward the podium.

"Today," the old man announced, his voice trembling, "we mourn not merely a commander but the man who carried Fortress Aegis through humanity's darkest years."

A wave of quiet agreement swept through the crowd. The councilman turned toward Ștefan.

"According to longstanding "I object."

The interruption cracked across the square like a rifle shot. Every face turned. Colonel Adrian climbed onto the platform with calm, measured steps. His expression carried just enough sorrow to appear respectful. Just enough.

"We all loved General Victor," Adrian began, lowering his head briefly. "No one questions his sacrifices."His gaze slowly lifted toward Ștefan. But our duty isn't to the dead."His voice hardened. It is to the living."

The crowd shifted uneasily. Adrian continued before anyone could interrupt.

"General Victor's passing leaves thirty thousand survivors depending on one decision."He let the words settle. Can we entrust their lives to a twenty-two-year-old civilian?"

The square erupted into murmurs. Several officers exchanged uncertain glances. Others nodded openly.Ștefan remained motionless. He understood exactly what Adrian was doing. This wasn't grief. This was politics.

Captain Elena Petrova stepped forward from the officers' ranks, her sharp green eyes narrowing. As commander of Fortress Aegis's reconnaissance division, she rarely involved herself in internal disputes. Her reputation had been forged beyond the walls, where hesitation meant death.

"This is a funeral," she said evenly. It shouldn't become a trial."Adrian offered her a polite smile. I couldn't agree more."His hand slipped inside his uniform. Which is why I waited until today."

He withdrew several weathered documents bearing the fortress seal. A murmur rippled across the council.

"I discovered these among General Victor's private records."

Ștefan frowned. His father's handwriting was unmistakable. The signature looked genuine.  Adrian unfolded the papers carefully.

"The General reconsidered his successor shortly before his illness worsened."

The words struck the square like thunder. Council members immediately crowded closer. One of them adjusted his glasses.

"This states..." he whispered....Colonel Adrian Varga is appointed Acting Supreme Commander."

Gasps spread through the civilians. Some soldiers stared at Ștefan with sympathy. Others looked relieved. Adrian lowered the documents.

"I never intended to reveal this today."His voice carried practised reluctance. But General Victor understood what many of us already know."He faced the crowd. Compassion alone cannot defend these walls."

Several officers stepped beside him. Major Ionescu.Commander Pavel.Logistics Chief Sorin. One after another. Each movement felt rehearsed.Ștefan's stomach tightened. Not because he feared losing authority.Because he suddenly recognised the pattern.

This hadn't happened overnight. The alliances...The prepared speeches...The forged paperwork...Even the timing of today's announcement...Weeks.Perhaps months.

The coup had begun while his father was still alive. Captain Elena snatched the documents before anyone could stop her. She studied them carefully. Her expression darkened. Finally, she looked toward the council.

"I don't know who forged these documents."The square grew utterly still. But I know someone is lying."Adrian's smile barely changed. Are you accusing General Victor of deception?"

"I'm accusing someone of exploiting his death."

For a brief moment, tension settled over the gathering so heavily that even the wind seemed to hesitate. Every soldier's hand drifted closer to their weapon.Ștefan finally stepped forward. His voice remained calm despite the storm surrounding him.

"My father believed this fortress belonged to its people, not to one man."

Many civilians lowered their heads. Several looked ashamed. Adrian sighed.

"Your father was a hero."He allowed genuine respect to colour those words.

Then his expression hardened. But heroes don't always leave behind worthy heirs."

The sentence spread through the crowd with devastating effect. Some nodded. Others looked away from Ștefan entirely. Fear had already chosen its leader.Ștefan remembered sitting beside his father's bedside only three nights earlier.

Victor's breathing had been weak. His hands had trembled. Yet his eyes remained steady.

"Power doesn't make a leader."Responsibility does."Promise me one thing."If protecting our people ever means sacrificing your pride...""Choose the people."

At last, Ștefan understood what those words truly meant. He could challenge Adrian. Many soldiers still respected Victor enough to fight. Captain Elena would almost certainly stand beside him. Blood would flood the memorial square before sunset.

Everything his father built would collapse from within before the zombies ever breached the walls. He closed his eyes. Then slowly opened them again.

"I won't draw weapons against my own people."

Adrian's gaze sharpened. For the first time, genuine surprise flickered across his face. He had expected resistance. Instead...He had been handed victory. Adrian raised one hand.

"Secure the heir."

Heavy boots thundered across the stone courtyard. Steel rifles snapped into firing positions. Dozens of armed soldiers emerged from every direction, forming a tightening circle around Ștefan while civilians recoiled in shock. Captain Elena instinctively reached for the pistol at her hip, but the overwhelming number of weapons trained on the young heir forced even her to hesitate.

The funeral of humanity's greatest commander had become the opening move in a carefully orchestrated coup.

And as the ring of soldiers closed around him, Ștefan realised that his father's death was never the true beginning of this tragedy. It had only been the signal for those waiting in the shadows to seize everything he had left.
