The first rifle butt struck Ștefan between the shoulder blades before anyone announced his sentence. He stumbled one step, caught himself, and slowly straightened.

The dozens of rifles aimed at his chest made it painfully clear that the blow had not been given to hurt him. It had been delivered to remind everyone watching that the son of General Victor Drăghici no longer possessed any authority within Fortress Aegis.

The memorial square had transformed from a place of mourning into a military courtroom, yet no trial had ever begun.

Colonel Adrian Varga descended from the platform with measured confidence, the forged succession documents still folded neatly beneath one arm. The officers who had pledged themselves to him formed a half circle behind him, while soldiers tightened their cordon around Ștefan.

Every movement revealed preparation. Every command had been rehearsed long before General Victor drew his final breath. Captain Elena remained where she stood, her jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles in her face trembled. Her hand hovered near the pistol on her belt, but she never reached for it.

She had counted the rifles. She knew exactly how many loyal soldiers Adrian had hidden around the square. If she fired one shot, hundreds of civilians standing between the soldiers would pay the price. Adrian surveyed the crowd before speaking.

"My fellow survivors," he announced, his voice carrying easily across the square, "today has already demanded more grief than any of us wished to bear."

He allowed his gaze to settle on Ștefan.

"Unfortunately, our investigation has uncovered evidence that the former commander's son intended to challenge the lawful transfer of authority."Murmurs rippled through the gathering.Ștefan stared at Adrian without flinching. You know that's a lie."

"I know," Adrian replied quietly enough that only those nearest could hear, "that people believe the man who keeps them alive."

Then his expression shifted back into one of solemn authority.

"Rather than allow civil war inside these walls, I have chosen mercy."The word stung more sharply than any insult. Mercy?" Elena said, unable to hide her disbelief. Adrian ignored her.

"Ștefan Drăghici is hereby stripped of military rank, citizenship within Fortress Aegis, and all rights of inheritance."A soldier stepped forward. Remove his insignia."

Hands seized Ștefan's coat. The bronze commander-in-training badge his father had pinned to his collar years ago was ripped free.

Another soldier removed the fortress identification tag hanging around his neck. Each item landed in a wooden crate already prepared beside the platform.Prepared.Even this humiliation had been organised in advance.

The crowd watched in painful silence. Some faces showed relief. Others showed shame. Most simply looked away. When the soldiers reached for the sword hanging at Ștefan's waist, he instinctively tightened his grip.

The weapon had never belonged to him. Its worn leather hilt still carried scratches from battles fought decades earlier. Victor had entrusted it to him only a month before his illness became fatal.

"Carry it," his father had said. "Not because steel makes you strong, but because every mark on this blade reminds you that leadership always demands sacrifice."

A lieutenant twisted Ștefan's wrist until his fingers opened. The sword was pulled free. For the first time since his father's funeral began, genuine pain crossed Ștefan's face. Adrian accepted the weapon with surprising care. He examined the blade for a moment before resting it across both palms.

"A fine sword," he remarked. It belonged to my father."It belonged to the Commander of Fortress Aegis."Adrian's eyes hardened. And you are no longer either."

The words settled over the square with suffocating weight. Near the front of the crowd, an elderly woman suddenly stepped forward despite the soldiers blocking her path. Her clothes were patched so many times that almost none of the original fabric remained.

Ștefan recognised her immediately. Mrs. Marta. His father had personally ordered extra medicine for her husband every winter. Tears streamed down her weathered face.

"Young Master..."One soldier shoved her backwards. She nearly fell before another civilian caught her."I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice breaking under the weight of helplessness. "Forgive us... We're too afraid to speak."

Ștefan offered her the faintest smile. He understood. Fear ruled the fortress now. Not loyalty. Not hope.Fear.Adrian raised one hand. Escort the prisoner."

The massive steel gates at the eastern wall began to move. Ancient gears groaned beneath the weight of reinforced metal, producing a deep mechanical rumble that echoed throughout Fortress Aegis. Everyone knew what waited beyond those gates.

The Dead District. An endless sea of ruined buildings where the infected wandered in numbers no military force had ever managed to eliminate. No one survived there alone. Not for an hour. Not for a day.

The opening between the gates widened inch by inch until the ruined streets became visible. Broken vehicles clogged the roads. Abandoned apartment towers leaned at impossible angles. Between them drifted countless figures.

Thousands of zombies.Perhaps tens of thousands. They wandered through the city, occasionally colliding with one another before staggering onward in search of living prey. Even from the safety of the walls, their distant growls carried across the wind.

A child buried his face against his mother's shoulder. Several soldiers swallowed nervously. Veteran scouts avoided looking too long into the ruins. Adrian stepped beside Ștefan one final time.

"You wanted your inheritance."His tone held neither anger nor pity. Only cold satisfaction."I'm giving it to you."He gestured toward the endless wasteland beyond the walls. The world outside these walls."

The soldiers shoved Ștefan forward. His boots crossed the threshold. The gates immediately began closing behind him. Steel scraped against stone as the fortress sealed itself once again, separating the last son of General Victor from everything he had ever known.

The final gap narrowed until only a thin line of light remained. Then it disappeared. The thunderous boom of the locking mechanisms echoed through the empty streets.Ștefan stood alone beneath the grey sky.

He did not curse Adrian. He did not pound on the gates. He did not beg to be let back inside. Instead, he looked up at the towering walls his father had spent a lifetime building. Disappointment settled over him far more heavily than hatred ever could.

The fortress still stood. Its people were still alive. Yet the ideals that had held them together had already begun to crumble. Victor's dream had not died with illness. It had died the moment fear became more valuable than trust. A dry gust swept through the ruined avenue, carrying with it the smell of rust, dust... and decay.

Then, somewhere ahead, a lone figure stopped walking. Its pale, lifeless head turned with slow, unnatural precision. Clouded white eyes fixed directly on Ștefan. The nearest zombie had noticed him.

Until they surrounded a group of raiders."He drew a shaky breath. The zombies ignored the civilians.""They attacked only the bandits."Uneasy whispers spread through the assembled officers.
