The quiet statement lingered in the air, spoken with a calm confidence that seemed entirely out of place, causing Lord Evander Cross's arrogant smile to vanish for a brief second.

Then Gideon Veyne cleared his throat loudly, deliberately shattering the awkward silence.

"I believe this commoner has finished making a fool of himself for the evening. Security can remove him if he refuses to leave on his own."

"That won't be necessary," Darian stated evenly.

He snapped the ring box shut with a slow, deliberate motion and slipped it back into his coat pocket. He offered Seraphina one final look, showing no trace of anger or desperate pleading, but rather a quiet, unshakeable finality.

"You called me a footnote," Darian noted, his voice carrying clearly to those nearby. "Perhaps I am. Yet footnotes remain a permanent part of the text, Seraphina. Someday you will search for this page again, and you will detest what you read."

He recognized that Seraphina was merely yielding to her family's pressure. She wasn't an inherently bad person, and she was certainly a capable officer who faced the wilderness without fear. Yet she consistently lacked the courage to confront her relatives or make independent choices.

Perhaps this outcome was for the best, Darian reflected privately. Given his true stature, he had no desire for a companion who surrendered her will so easily to others.

"Are you offering another threat?" Cassian mocked with a sneer.

"No," Darian clarified calmly. "I am stating a fact. There is a distinct difference, as I mentioned earlier."

He turned and walked toward the exit, passing Gideon's self-satisfied expression, Marcella's cold dismissal, and Lord Evander Cross's cousins, Ronan Cross and Alaric Cross, who were chuckling behind their glasses. He moved past the crowd of onlookers who had gathered to watch a man suffer a public humiliation.

"A wise decision," Lord Evander Cross shouted after him, his confidence fully restored once Darian turned away. "Keep walking, Vale. The exit is right where you found it. Try not to trip on your way back to whatever wretched alley you came from."

Mocking laughter followed Darian all the way to the heavy doors, only fading once they shut behind him, leaving him outside in the pouring rain.

He stood on the wet stone pavement for a long moment, allowing the cold downpour to soak his coat. His cheek still throbbed from the slap, and the velvet box weighed heavily in his pocket.

Five years, he thought bitterly. Five years together, and the moment her family deemed me useless, she let them dictate every choice.

He began walking down the damp avenue without a specific destination, wanting only to put distance between himself and the auditorium.

"You are still moving," a woman's voice called out from the shadows of an overhang.

She stood beneath the awning of a closed tea shop, her arms crossed as she observed him without pity or amusement. That neutral posture immediately set her apart from the crowd inside.

It was Xena Vale.

He recognized her instantly, as did everyone in the region. She was the young leader who had assumed control after her father's passing and earned a reputation as a fierce manager who spent years defending her district against rival factions.

"I caught the end of that display from my transport," she remarked casually. "I didn't need to observe the entire scene to understand what occurred."

Darian evaluated her briefly before speaking.

"Then you already understand that I am not seeking conversation tonight."

"I am not offering pleasantries," Xena replied, stepping into the dim light of a street lamp. "I am presenting an arrangement, a very different proposal from the one thrown back at you inside."

Darian felt a slight tension in his chest at the word, though he remained quiet.

"The Regional Council has granted me forty days," Xena explained in a businesslike manner, as though outlining a formal contract while standing in the midnight rain. "Forty days to declare an engagement, or they will select a partner for me. I require a spouse who desires nothing from the arrangement beyond the legal status itself. Someone the Council will accept because he lacks family ties and political connections."

Her sharp eyes met his directly.

"And judging by what I just witnessed, someone who has no supporters remaining in this district either."

Darian was well aware of the Council's pressure regarding her marriage. They intended to force one of their allies onto her to secure control over her territory. Ironically, that designated suitor happened to be Lord Evander Cross.

A faint, bitter chuckle escaped Darian. He found the petty political maneuvering in this lower realm somewhat absurd, watching it from the perspective of his true status in the Sovereign Realm.

"You have a unique way of phrasing an offer," Darian observed quietly.

"I am not attempting to make it sound romantic," Xena responded firmly. "I am stating the terms clearly."

She studied his face for a moment, tilting her head slightly as if evaluating a tactical report, focusing strictly on practical value while ignoring emotional noise.

"A formal agreement," she continued. "Nothing more, unless you choose otherwise down the line. In exchange, you gain my political backing, my assets, and a standing that ensures no citizen in this city will dare strike you again."

She paused briefly.

"I assume that holds some appeal considering your evening."

Darian glanced back toward the illuminated windows of the auditorium. Faint sounds of music and laughter still drifted through the glass, where Seraphina was likely moving on, dismissing the entire incident as a minor inconvenience.

You wanted me out of your life, he thought grimly. You have no concept of what actually walked away tonight.

He turned his attention back to Xena, who stood steadily in the rain with an offer born entirely of mutual utility.

"And if I decline?" he asked softly.

"Then I select another candidate," Xena stated without emotion. "And you return inside to let them finish destroying your standing."

The rain continued to fall steadily between them. Behind Darian, the heavy doors opened briefly, releasing a burst of light and laughter into the dark street before swinging shut once more.

Darian reached into his pocket, his fingers brushing against the velvet box that still held the warmth of his hand.

He did not reply immediately.

Chapter 9Three days after the wedding, Lord Evander Cross sat across from his father in the family's private study. The figures displayed on the data slate between them were worse than they had been that morning, and worse still than the day before.“Explain this to me again,” Lord Corwin Cross said. His voice was quiet, but it was the kind of quiet that had made grown men sweat through their collars in that room for thirty years.“How does a family that has controlled the western shipping lanes for forty years lose them in a matter of days?”“I don't know.”Evander pushed the slate across the desk, frustration cutting through his usual composure.“The contracts were bought out from under us through a logistics broker we've used for more than a decade. By the time our legal team noticed the routing changes, the documents had already changed hands twice. We can't trace ownership beyond the third layer. Every lawyer we've hired hits the same wall in a different jurisdiction.”“And the

Chapter 8The Cross estate was nothing like the promotion hall.It seemed to burn against the night.Every window across the massive residence glowed with warm light, spilling over the perfectly maintained grounds while servants moved along the driveway carrying trays of champagne. Music drifted through the open doors as guests arrived one after another.Darian had seen wealth before. He had seen the ordinary kind worn openly by families like the Veynes, and he had seen the impossible kind that powered the towers of Heavenly City. The Cross family wore theirs differently.Loudly.“You're quiet,” Xena remarked as their car moved slowly up the long driveway.“I'm listening,” Darian replied.“To what?” she asked.“Whatever this place is trying to tell me about itself.”Xena studied him for a moment, but whatever she saw in his expression made her decide against asking further questions.Inside, the ballroom was already crowded.Officers stood in small groups beside Council members. The transport returned Darian to the gardens behind the Vale estate just as dawn began to break. The storm had weakened to a thin, cold drizzle, leaving the grounds covered in a sheen of rain.He slipped through the gardens without drawing attention. He followed the hedge toward the side entrance, which the household staff rarely locked before sunrise, then climbed the narrow service staircase instead of using the main stairs.By the time he reached his room, the communication device beneath his collar was safely hidden away. Nothing about his appearance suggested that he had spent the night in a command center high above the clouds. He removed his damp coat, hung it beside the door, and went to bed.Xena found him the following morning in the east hallway. He was already dressed, holding a data slate in one hand as he reviewed the information displayed across its screen."You're awake early," she observed."Old habit," Darian replied."We have the tailor at noon." The rest of the evening wound down with surprising quiet, though not before Harlan had stormed out of the hall and Evander had followed right behind him.Darian accompanied Xena back to her estate once the reception cleared, eager to make the arrangement look as binding as possible now that every pair of eyes in the district was locked onto them.Even so, Darian had matters of his own to attend to. He waited until the Vale estate settled into midnight stillness before making his move.Xena's wing of the manor had gone dark an hour prior. Out at the perimeter, the guards had swapped shifts, sliding comfortably into the lazy cadence of men expecting nothing whatsoever to happen on a rainy night. A steady, soft drizzle blanketed the grounds, slicking the cobblestones and making the sprawling avenues outside an easy place to vanish into.Stepping out onto the dark stone balcony of his guest suite, Darian glanced around to ensure the yard was empty, then pressed two fingers against a small

The car rolled smoothly through the relentless downpour. Outside the fog-slicked windows, the massive iron gates of the estate loomed into view, dripping with mist."You're staying in my quarters tonight," she said the moment the engine cut, her voice leaving no room for argument. "We're making the announcement tomorrow morning.""Agreed," he replied without hesitation. "Though I have one condition.""Name it," she answered."There are things about my past you aren't going to understand right away," he murmured, watching the rain streak the glass. "As long as none of it threatens you or your city, and I give you my word it won't, we don't go digging for answers neither of us is ready to give. Deal?"She held his gaze for a long moment, appraising him the way a seasoned tactician might size up unfamiliar ground."Deal," she said. The council hall was packed. Roughly three hundred of the city's elite stood shoulder to shoulder in the vaulted room, every last one of them whispering about

Chapter 4Darian's fingers remained curled around the velvet casing hidden inside his coat pocket. He chose not to withdraw it. Looking at it again was unnecessary when he could vividly recall standing before dozens of onlookers, offering it to the one person who had dismissed it as meaningless.Xena Vale waited in silence, giving him ample room to process the situation. She remained beneath the awning with her arms folded, watching him with calm, detached composure, as though time were a resource under her command rather than a force pushing her forward."You are weighing your options," she remarked calmly. "That suggests progress.""I am considering why a woman of your standing requires someone in my position," Darian replied. "Any prominent citizen in this city would gladly accept your terms. Half the officers inside that venue would agree to marry you tonight if you offered.""Half those officers are seeking personal gain," Xena explained firmly. "They want titles, social leverage
