Chapter 4

Darian's fingers remained curled around the velvet casing hidden inside his coat pocket.

He chose not to withdraw it. Looking at it again was unnecessary when he could vividly recall standing before dozens of onlookers, offering it to the one person who had dismissed it as meaningless.

Xena Vale waited in silence, giving him ample room to process the situation. She remained beneath the awning with her arms folded, watching him with calm, detached composure, as though time were a resource under her command rather than a force pushing her forward.

"You are weighing your options," she remarked calmly. "That suggests progress."

"I am considering why a woman of your standing requires someone in my position," Darian replied. "Any prominent citizen in this city would gladly accept your terms. Half the officers inside that venue would agree to marry you tonight if you offered."

"Half those officers are seeking personal gain," Xena explained firmly. "They want titles, social leverage, or access to my family's estate. Meanwhile, you just endured complete abandonment by people you trusted within five minutes." Her gaze remained fixed on his face. "That makes you the only individual in this district tonight who desires nothing from my name."

The statement struck him with unexpected sharpness.

"You speak directly," he noted.

"Time does not afford me the luxury of subtlety," she stated plainly.

A sleek black vehicle glided to the curb behind her, its headlights cutting through the heavy downpour. A uniformed driver stepped out silently and held the rear door open, waiting for her direction.

"Join me," Xena urged. "If you accept, I will outline the arrangement while we ride. If you refuse, I will instruct my driver to take you to your destination, and we shall never speak of this matter again."

Darian looked past her toward the distant glow of the auditorium. Faint sounds of music still drifted across the street. He wondered briefly if Seraphina's laughter was among the noise, though a small, stubborn part of his pride resented that lingering thought.

He released his grip on the velvet box.

"Very well," he agreed quietly. "I will hear the details."

Across the district, through an encrypted transmission line no third party could intercept, a familiar voice whispered into Darian's ear.

"Sovereign, shall I compile a comprehensive dossier on Lord Evander Cross and the Veyne family? Following tonight's events, I presume you will require full intelligence shortly."

Darian pulled his collar up against the rain as Xena entered the vehicle, preparing to follow her inside.

"Compile everything," he instructed softly, keeping his voice quiet enough for the transmitter to register. "Begin with the Cross family's financial holdings. We will address the Veyne family afterward."

"Understood, Sovereign. What shall be done with the primary emblem?" the voice inquired.

Darian's expression remained completely flat.

"Store it," he commanded firmly. "I have no further use for it. At least not for her."

The vehicle pulled away from the curb, leaving the brightly lit venue behind in the misty downpour. Neither passenger spoke for several minutes as water trickled across the tinted glass, blurring the street lamps into streaks of gold.

Darian watched the district pass by outside. His cheek still throbbed faintly where Lord Evander Cross had struck him, though he refrained from touching his face.

Xena eventually broke the silence.

"You handled that situation with more composure than most men would display."

"Which aspect?" Darian asked. "The public rejection by her family, or the physical insult from her betrothed?"

"Both," she answered, studying him across the leather seats without revealing any emotion. "Most individuals would have struck back, lost their temper, or pleaded with her in front of the gathering. You simply stood your ground and left."

"Would striking him have improved my circumstances tonight?" he countered.

"No," she admitted frankly. "Though it would have been an understandable reaction."

Darian returned his gaze to the window.

"Experience has taught me a lesson," he murmured. "When people have formed a fixed opinion about your worth, fighting them does not alter their perception. It merely provides them with ammunition for gossip."

A subtle shift occurred in Xena's posture. Her cold expression softened slightly, as though she were reinterpreting the information before her.

"You have encountered these situations before," she observed.

"More frequently than you realize," he responded quietly.

She allowed another silence to settle before reaching into her jacket and retrieving a slim data slate. She extended it across the console toward him.

"Here are the formal terms," she instructed. "Review the document thoroughly before making a final commitment tonight."

Darian accepted the device and activated the illuminated display with his thumb. He reviewed the clauses steadily, fully aware of her watchful eyes evaluating how carefully he read every line.

"Public appearances," he noted aloud. "Joint attendance before the Regional Council. Residence within your main estate." He looked up from the screen. "Is this the extent of the requirements?"

"That covers the main obligations," she confirmed. "In return, you receive absolute legal immunity under the Vale lineage. No individual will dare target you once you carry my family's backing. Not Evander Cross, not his father, nor my own relatives should they object."

"And when the year concludes?" he inquired.

"We reevaluate the agreement at that point," she answered.

"That offers no long-term guarantee," he pointed out.

"It does not," Xena agreed plainly.

Darian met her gaze steadily. She returned his look without flinching, making no effort to embellish the proposition beyond the text displayed on the screen.

"Most individuals in your position would demand strict guarantees right now," she remarked. "Assurances in writing to protect themselves should my decision change months down the line."

"I do not operate like most men," he stated flatly.

"Clearly," she replied, tilting her head slightly as if analyzing an unfamiliar file. "An hour ago, you were offering a proposal to a woman who abandoned you before a crowded room. Now you are agreeing to wed a stranger with total composure, as if selecting a routine meal."

Darian offered a faint, cold smile that failed to reach his eyes.

"Tonight provided a valuable lesson. I discovered precisely how little other people's opinions regarding my future actually matter."

Xena offered no verbal response, but her posture relaxed slightly against her seat, suggesting she had satisfied her private curiosity about his character.

The vehicle slowed as it approached a busy intersection. The rain drummed harder against the roof, creating a steady rhythm that filled the quiet interior.

"There is an additional detail you should consider before we proceed," Xena cautioned. "My uncle Harlan will strongly oppose this decision."

"I anticipated as much," he noted.

"You may not fully grasp his level of opposition," she explained, leaning forward as her tone grew sharper. "He has spent months attempting to arrange my match with Lord Evander Cross. He believes a union with the Cross family solidifies our territorial control, and he has already assured several Council members that the matter was nearly settled."

"And now his niece returns with an unknown candidate instead," Darian concluded.

"Precisely," she confirmed, a muscle tightening near her jaw. "He will react with severe anger."

"I am capable of handling your uncle," he said calmly.

A slight trace of amusement passed through her features, though her expression remained controlled.

"You express considerable confidence for someone who received a public blow less than an hour ago."

"That presented a completely different category of challenge," he observed.

"Did it?" she questioned.

Darian held her gaze, allowing a cold, unyielding resolve to show behind his eyes, a look far removed from the passive stance he had displayed earlier.

"Yes," he answered quietly. "It certainly did."

Chapter 9Three days after the wedding, Lord Evander Cross sat across from his father in the family's private study. The figures displayed on the data slate between them were worse than they had been that morning, and worse still than the day before.“Explain this to me again,” Lord Corwin Cross said. His voice was quiet, but it was the kind of quiet that had made grown men sweat through their collars in that room for thirty years.“How does a family that has controlled the western shipping lanes for forty years lose them in a matter of days?”“I don't know.”Evander pushed the slate across the desk, frustration cutting through his usual composure.“The contracts were bought out from under us through a logistics broker we've used for more than a decade. By the time our legal team noticed the routing changes, the documents had already changed hands twice. We can't trace ownership beyond the third layer. Every lawyer we've hired hits the same wall in a different jurisdiction.”“And the

Music drifted through the open doors as guests arrived one after another.Darian had seen wealth before. He had seen the ordinary kind worn openly by families like the Veynes, and he had seen the impossible kind that powered the towers of Heavenly City. The Cross family wore theirs differently.Loudly.“You're quiet,” Xena remarked as their car moved slowly up the long driveway.“I'm listening,” Darian replied.“To what?” she asked.“Whatever this place is trying to tell me about itself.”Xena studied him for a moment, but whatever she saw in his expression made her decide against asking further questions.Inside, the ballroom was already crowded.Officers stood in small groups beside Council members. The transport returned Darian to the gardens behind the Vale estate just as dawn began to break. The storm had weakened to a thin, cold drizzle, leaving the grounds covered in a sheen of rain.He slipped through the gardens without drawing attention. He followed the hedge toward the side entrance, which the household staff rarely locked before sunrise, then climbed the narrow service staircase instead of using the main stairs.By the time he reached his room, the communication device beneath his collar was safely hidden away. Nothing about his appearance suggested that he had spent the night in a command center high above the clouds. He removed his damp coat, hung it beside the door, and went to bed.Xena found him the following morning in the east hallway. He was already dressed, holding a data slate in one hand as he reviewed the information displayed across its screen."You're awake early," she observed."Old habit," Darian replied."We have the tailor at noon." The rest of the evening wound down with surprising quiet, though not before Harlan had stormed out of the hall and Evander had followed right behind him.Darian accompanied Xena back to her estate once the reception cleared, eager to make the arrangement look as binding as possible now that every pair of eyes in the district was locked onto them.Even so, Darian had matters of his own to attend to. He waited until the Vale estate settled into midnight stillness before making his move.Xena's wing of the manor had gone dark an hour prior. Out at the perimeter, the guards had swapped shifts, sliding comfortably into the lazy cadence of men expecting nothing whatsoever to happen on a rainy night. A steady, soft drizzle blanketed the grounds, slicking the cobblestones and making the sprawling avenues outside an easy place to vanish into.Stepping out onto the dark stone balcony of his guest suite, Darian glanced around to ensure the yard was empty, then pressed two fingers against a small

The car rolled smoothly through the relentless downpour. Outside the fog-slicked windows, the massive iron gates of the estate loomed into view, dripping with mist."You're staying in my quarters tonight," she said the moment the engine cut, her voice leaving no room for argument. "We're making the announcement tomorrow morning.""Agreed," he replied without hesitation. "Though I have one condition.""Name it," she answered."There are things about my past you aren't going to understand right away," he murmured, watching the rain streak the glass. "As long as none of it threatens you or your city, and I give you my word it won't, we don't go digging for answers neither of us is ready to give. Deal?"She held his gaze for a long moment, appraising him the way a seasoned tactician might size up unfamiliar ground."Deal," she said. The council hall was packed. Roughly three hundred of the city's elite stood shoulder to shoulder in the vaulted room, every last one of them whispering about
