Carlos had chosen the gown himself — a sweeping emerald silk, its bodice drawn tight with whalebone stays, its skirts spilling like forest shadows. The corset bit cruelly, cinching Janette’s waist, and the maids pressed layer upon layer of petticoats beneath the gown.
