The morning sun cast long shadows across the Langford Technologies parking lot as Marcus stepped out of Raymond's Mercedes. The building looked different now. Smaller somehow. Less intimidating.

"Are you certain about this?" Raymond asked from the driver's seat.

"I need to get my things." Marcus's voice was steady. "My mother's locket. Some photos. They're still in my locker."

"I can send someone."

"No." Marcus met his eyes. "I need to do this myself."

Raymond nodded slowly. "The bouncer will accompany you."

"That won't be necessary."

With those words Marcus left. He wasn't ready to reveal his identity yet, at least not until he got a grasp of everything. His enemies and that of his father could still be lurking somewhere.

Whispers followed in his wake.

"That's him."

"The guy from the video."

"He got Vince sent to the hospital."

"I heard his wife was sleeping with Mr. Langford for months."

Marcus kept his eyes forward.

"Marcus?"

He turned. Jessica Park stood in the doorway of the medical office, her nurse's uniform crisp and clean. Her face showed concern, genuine and unguarded.

"Jessica." He managed a small smile. She was one of the few people in this building who'd treated him like a human being. When he'd cut his hand on broken glass last month, she'd bandaged it carefully and hadn't asked questions about how it happened.

"I heard what happened." She approached slowly, as if he might bolt. "With Vanessa. And Mr. Langford. I'm so sorry."

"Don't be."

"No, I am. What she did to you was horrible. No one deserves that kind of betrayal." Her eyes were troubled. "I saw them together once. Months ago. In the parking garage. I thought about telling you, but I convinced myself I was mistaken, that it wasn't my place, that maybe I'd misunderstood what I was seeing." She twisted her hands together. "I was a coward. And you deserved better than that."

Marcus felt a strange calm wash over him. A week ago, this revelation would have destroyed him further. Now, it was just another piece of a puzzle he'd already solved.

"You weren't a coward, Jessica. You were kind. That's different." He touched her shoulder briefly. "Thank you for that. For being kind when nobody else was."

Her eyes glistened. "What will you do now? Did you find another job? If you need a reference, I can..."

"That's very kind of you, but..."

"Well, well, well!" A voice sliced through the moment like a blade. "Look who crawled back!"

Marcus turned. Derek strode down the corridor, his designer suit pristine, his hair gelled to perfection. Behind him followed Mark Chen and David Liu, two junior executives who always laughed at Derek's jokes, no matter how cruel.

Derek's eyes landed on Jessica, and his smile widened. He'd been pursuing her for months, everyone knew it. She'd rejected him three times.

"Jessica, darling." Derek's voice dripped with false charm. "Why are you wasting your time talking to the trash? Didn't anyone tell you garbage day was yesterday?"

Mark and David snickered.

Jessica's face tightened. "Derek, don't..."

"Don't what? State facts?" Derek sauntered closer, clearly enjoying having an audience. "Marcus, here is yesterday's news. Washed up and finished."

Jessica's face flushed with anger. "That's disgusting, Derek. He's going through a divorce. Have some compassion."

"Compassion?" Derek's eyes gleamed. "For him? Jessica, sweetheart, I'm trying to protect you. You're a beautiful, intelligent woman. You work in healthcare. You save lives. You shouldn't be contaminating yourself by breathing the same air as this failure."

"Stop it," Jessica said firmly.

"No, no, let me educate you about Marcus Hayes." Derek began counting on his fingers. "Failed businessman, failed husband, failed man and his own wife couldn't stand being poor with him. She chose a real man. A successful man. Can you blame her?"

Marcus's jaw clenched. The bouncer shifted slightly, but Marcus raised his hand, signaling him to wait.

"Are you finished?" Marcus asked.

"Finished? I'm just getting started!" Derek was on a roll now, feeding off Mark and David's laughter, showing off for Jessica. "Since you're here, Marcus, make yourself useful." He lifted his right foot. "My shoe came untied in the parking lot. Get down on your knees and fix it."

The corridor went dead silent.

Jessica gasped. "Derek, you can't be serious."

"Isn't he the messenger?"

"Administrative!!!" She added.

"Who cares, he's trash and has been leeching on the company doing nothing. He should as well clean my shoes."

A small crowd had instantly gathered. All of them watching. All of them waited to see him humiliated one more time.

Derek sensed victory. He always could smell weakness. "I'm waiting, Marcus or I will make you get fired if you aren't already!"

Marcus batted a brow so calmly and responded in a way that caused Derek's blood to rush through his vines.

"How can you fire someone that owns this place?”

CHAPTER FOURTEENIt was as though Vanessa’s breath had ceased, but she was able to get a grip on herself.“Did you just speak to me like that?” She asked, but Marcus paid her no more attention. The latter turned to Gary, and then he took a deep breath.“Who did you say you are again?” He asked, holding onto the smirk all over his face.“Who the hell do you think you are to ask him that?!” Victor snapped, pointing Marcus in the face.“Do you know what he is capable of doing to you, Marcus?! You should be afraid right now.”“But I am not…” Marcus remarked, still staring at the middle-aged man.“I am sure you can speak on your own behalf. You don’t need anyone to talk on your behalf.”Gary snorted, and then he slowly turned to face Victor who almost looked away immediately.“I am so sorry that he insulted you, Mr. Whitehead….”“No…” Gary stopped Victor before he could continue, taking a deep breath.“You don’t need to worry about me. I will take care of him myself. He is nothing.” He ret

It’s me!” Victor increased his pace as soon as he realized that the man had recognized him, marching as though he was the host of the event.Victor had to stop getting closer when the two guards standing next to the middle-aged man tried to stop him, putting out their hands.“It’s okay. Let him through.” Gary signaled to the guards, and after they had given Victor one last look, they stepped out of the way slowly.“I wasn’t certain if it was you, Mr. Whitehead. But I am very glad that I have seen you.” Victor chuckled softly, and then he extended his right hand toward Gary for a handshake. He sighed in relief as soon as Gary obliged him, getting rid of the doubt that was simmering inside him.“What are you doing here, Victor?” Gary asked, admiring the fancy suit Victor was putt

CHAPTER TWELVE Marcus looked up, and then he scoffed. He couldn’t hide it, the spite he felt for the woman he once called his own. “You wish.” He blurted, causing the couple to gasp.Vanessa covered her mouth while she turned to look at Victor, urging him to do something about her ex-husband’s unusual audacity. Victor stepped forward after a few seconds, and Vanessa felt a bit relaxed. She adjusted her dress, nodding while she waited for what was about to happen. Victor snorted, and while he was still boiling with disdain, he repeated his threat from earlier. “It’s either you leave this place on your own or I am going to ask the Head of Security of this place to throw you out.” He waited, hoping that his words were going to be able to spark some fear inside Marcus. At that time, they had drawn the attention of almost everyone in the hall. All eyes were on them, accompanied by the murmurings about the event that was meant to start in a couple of minutes. Marcus sighed heavily,

She was enraged, firing shots of disdain from a distance. Their movement quietly drew the attention of some of the guests, eyes flashing across the aisle. Finally, they were standing before Marcus, and it was clear that a hot drama was about to unfold. Tension, grew, chests puffed, and bloodshot eyes burned with piercing glares. Marcus took a deep breath, and then he finally took a sip from the glass he was holding. Then he smacked, looking up at the couple for the first time since they stood before him. Vanessa sighed the moment she saw that Marcus had finally recognized their presence, almost thinking that they had become invisible to him.She grunted, t

"Ladies and gentlemen, the announcement will begin shortly. Please take your seats."The voice crackled over the speakers, professional and clear.Victor exhaled. His shoulders sagged for just a moment before he caught himself and straightened. Relief washed over his face, quickly masked by forced confidence. The crowd's attention shifted immediately. Conversations turned from Marcus to the impending announcement. People began drifting toward their seats, the spectacle forgotten in favor of whatever was about to happen.Victor seized the moment. He raised his voice, loud enough for everyone still within earshot to hear."There's no need to stoop to the level of a peasant."Heads turned back toward him. He had their attention again, but on his terms now."I'm the CEO of a major company. My reputation speaks for itself." Victor straightened his tie, every inch the confident executive. He straightened his shoulders, smoothed his tie, and let a smile spread across his face.He leaned close to Vanessa, voice low. "What's he doing here?"Vanessa's grip tightened on his arm. "I don't know, but we can't let him ruin this."Victor's mind raced. Marcus shouldn't be here. Couldn't be here. This was an event for business elite, for people who mattered. Friendly. Surprised. Like running into an old acquaintance."Marcus? Marcus Hayes? Is that really you?"Heads turned. Conversations paused.
