Its death was instant.

As the light faded from the eyes of the Ogre chief, it seemed as though something stirred within the minds of the other monsters at the cave.

As though they felt his death, but were pleased by it.

The goblins began moving in different directions, without form or an inclination as to wherever they were.

They looked confused.

And then it clicked to Rhok. It was mind control.

He had killed the Chief, freeing them all from the hex he had put them under.

[CONGRATULATIONS]

[YOU HAVE SLAIN THE OGRE CHIEF]

'Huh?'

[NEW ATTRIBUTE ACQUIRED]

[ASSIMILATION]

'Wait wait, what's going on?'

[ASSIMILATION ALLOWS YOU TO PICK A RANDOM SKILL OF THOSE YOU HAVE SLAIN.]

[WOULD YOU LIKE TO TRY IT?]

Rhok looked at the system while he hid in the shadows, he was out of mana, weak, drenched in his sweat and had no way of escaping.

'Yes, damn it.' He cursed.

[ACQUIRING SKILL…]

[MIND CONTROL. ACQUIRED.]

[SKILL ALLOWS YOU TO CONTROL THE MINDS OF ANYONE YOU'RE STRONGER THAN. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE AND THEY SHALL REMAIN BOUND TO YOU UNTIL YOU DECIDE TO FREE THEM OR YOUR DEATH RELEASES THEM.]

'Well, that's a broken ability,' he sighed. He was tired, he needed mana.

[SKILL DOES NOT REQUIRE MANA TO ACTIVATE.]

A smile formed at Rhok's lips. Although it seemed like an inconvenience most times, the system knew exactly what he required at times like this. And for that, he had to be thankful.

Rhok stood up and stretched, he didn't need to hide anymore. As soon as he stepped out into the light, an ogre who stood a few feet from him saw him and attacked.

It swung down its club with enough force to split a tree in half, but before the attack could land. Rhok activated the mind control skill.

The club stopped just a few inches from his face, the gust of wind from the attack ruffled his hair slightly as the wind blew past him.

The ogre looked at him, placed his club down and looked at him once more. It cocked his head to the side and scratched its chin. Then it picked up its club and walked away.

Rhok looked at the rest of the horde before him. They all seemed calm, as though they were waiting for orders.

'This is an overpowered ability, and it's passive?'

He shook his head in disbelief, then just to be certain, he walked over to one of the goblins. Slit its throat with a sharp hand motion. The goblins didn't move. It simply stood there bleeding from his neck until it fell dead from blood loss.

Rhok shook his head once more. A truly broken skill.

[CONGRATULATIONS.]

[YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE QUEST IN THE GIVEN TIME LIMIT.]

[REWARDS.]

[NO DIARRHEA OR MANA REFLUX]

[HEHE...]

Rhok looked angrily at the system, it was back to its annoying self.

'What do you mean my rewards are no diarrhea. The fuck is that supposed to mean, huh?'

No answer.

Rhok swung his middle finger at the system then walked off.

'Stupid system.'

[I HEARD THAT!]

But Rhok ignored it. He walked among the midst of the horde with no worries or doubts. If anything he felt comfortable.

Then an idea clicked with him. He could make here his hiding spot, a pace to train and keep his treasures from the eyes of everyone.

He spread his shadow sense throughout the cave. It was bigger than he had expected, his shadow sense couldn't fully reach the end of it.

But his reach was just one kilometer.

But he felt at a certain point in the cave, it had a door even bigger than the one used to keep the slaves. He left the horde immediately.

He needed to know what was in there.

Minutes passed, and he stood in front of the door. This wasn't made of oak wood or anything of the sort.

It was a metal door. Thankfully, some time had passed and Rhok had been able to regain some of his mana.

He slid into the shadows and came out the other side. A dim golden light shone on his face. He saw the source of it and knew exactly what it was.

Money. Lots and lots of it.

Piles of gold so high it reached the roof of the cave. Rhok stood there in awe. This was just as much money as the kingdom's Treasury.

It must have taken years upon years to accumulate this much. But now it was his.

Rhok grinned darkly. In his past life he has been so bothered about saving more for his retirement.

But now he was just as rich as the entire country. If this wasn't a flex, then he didn't know what else was.

He slid out happily and went back to the horde. Although he was happy, he was certain about one thing.

Humans were involved!

And that meant that, the slaves and women being used to make cross babies was for a particular reason. A reason he didn't know but had to find out.

He was just a child. Why did he have to stress himself so much?

He tapped two Ogres and made them follow him, the least he could do was free the humans and use this place as he wished.

He was sure, the truth would come out eventually, he just needed to know the right places to look.

The Ogres dragged the doors open, light poured into the cave. The human prisoner saw the Ogres and wailed in horror. But the Ogre's didn't move.

They stood there.

Rather, it was the little boy who had moved. The boy who promised to come back was here once again. He wasn't harmed or dead.

Rather he smiled at them. Walked to them and cut their chains loose.

“You're free now” he said to them, but even they didn't believe it. Yet…

Yet, they stood up with hope, they all approached Rhok. Their voices shook, their hands trembled but the look in their eyes…

He knew that look all too well, he once enjoyed it, but he had come to hate it. After he had been betrayed.

Rhok pushed the memory from his mind. It was getting late, and he needed to start heading home, but there was something he needed to check.

He had felt a false wall on his way here, he would check before he left but for now. The humans came first.

[PAWN... OF THE GODS…]

'What?'

Rhok looked at the system expecting an answer.

[.....]

'Abyss Engine?'

[YES?]

'What did you say? What does that mean?'

[I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!]

Hmm, he shook his head and turned away, he had other important things to take care of.

The fire had long died down, yet Rhok remained awake, his back against the cold stone wall of the ruined shrine. The night was still, the kind of silence that gnawed at a man’s ears, making him believe there were whispers hiding in the quiet. The corpses of those he had cut down earlier still lay scattered outside, untouched by scavengers. Even they seemed unwilling to disturb the ground he now haunted.Veyra had already drifted into uneasy sleep, curled beneath her cloak, her chest rising and falling with sharp breaths. Rhok had almost envied her—her ability to slip into sleep even after watching him carve through men as if they were straw. He could not. His mind was too loud.He thought of the words she had said earlier. You’re not mortal anymore, Rhok. Stop pretending you are.It rang in his head like a bell struck too hard. She hadn’t meant it to wound him, but it had. Because sh

The room was quiet now.No chants. No pleading voices. No rattling chains or clashing seals of light. Only silence, broken by the faint drip of blood sliding from the stone altar onto the cracked floor. The cultists of Dawnlight had been reduced to nothing more than husks, their bodies scattered in the shadows like discarded garments. Some were frozen in mid prayer, faces twisted in devotion that had turned to terror the moment his black frost swept through them.Rhok stood in the center of the carnage. His breath came slow, steady, almost unnervingly calm. His hand was still raised, the frost lingering along his fingers, faint trails of smoke curling upward like ghostly incense. He stared at them, and for the first time in what felt like forever, he hesitated. The corpses looked different to him now, not enemies, not obstacles, not zealots blind in their worship. Just bodies. Human bodies. People wi

The fortress walls groaned as if alive, stone and steel whispering secrets of centuries past. Rhok moved through its hollow belly, shadows clinging to him like loyal dogs. The air smelled of burnt oil, rusted chains, and incense, a sickly sweetness that didn’t belong here. He could feel it before he saw them: faith, twisted and burning, pressing against his chest. The Cult of the Dawnlight. He hadn’t expected them here, buried in the bones of an old fortress. Dawnlight worshippers were usually loud, fanatical, building temples of gold and fire in the open. But these were different, quiet, coiled, and waiting. The first of them stepped forward. White robes painted with sunbursts, but stained with something darker. Their faces glowed in the flickering torchlight, eyes glistening as if fevered with holy fire. And then—one of them smiled, almost kindly, as though greeting an old friend.“At last,” the man whispered. “The Nameless walks into the heart of the sun.”Rhok’s hand twitched near

Rhok walked through the jagged cliffs with the wind tearing at his cloak. The world here was always cruel, but this stretch of land felt emptier than usual. No carrion birds, no scuttling vermin, not even the soft hiss of sand moving across stone. It was silence, the kind that presses into your ears until you can hear your own blood. At first, he thought it was simply his imagination filling the void. But then he stopped, tilting his head as the air seemed to vibrate faintly. A sound, fragile as if whispered into the cracks of the world, drifted into him.It wasn’t the voice of the living. It wasn’t the echo of wind. It was something else entirely.Come…He froze. He had learned enough by now not to trust any beckoning in this realm. Still, the pull was undeniable, like threads tugging at the marrow in his bones. Rhok clenched his fists and exhaled.“Fine,” he muttered. “But if this is another trick, I’ll burn the ground behind me so no one else follows.”The whisper grew stronger the

The night stretched long, the silence heavy. Rhok walked the worn path alone, only the crackle of fireflies flickering in the distance to remind him that the world had not yet gone silent. His boots scraped across broken stone, every step echoing faintly, swallowed by the darkness of the underworld’s veins. He felt it before he saw it, her presence. Like a ripple in still water, Velmira’s essence crept into the cracks of his mind. His chest tightened, not in fear, but in recognition. The shadows stirred, and suddenly, shards of fractured light cut across the path. Each shard carried her face. Her eyes, grey, almost silver watched him from a hundred angles, reflections trapped in broken glass that wasn’t really there.“Velmira.”Her lips curved in a half-smile, voice dripping with mockery and allure. “You still remember me. I thought maybe you’d forgotten. You seem to forget things easily these days… like your humanity.”Rhok exhaled, letting the words wash over him. “Humanity? I burne

The day began as nothing more than a quiet wander. The fields outside the ruins stretched wide, dotted with tall grass swaying in the wind. Veyra walked beside me, carrying a basket she had stolen from a village some miles back. She claimed it was for berries, though most of what she’d picked so far had already ended up in her mouth. She hummed as she walked, and for a moment it almost felt like peace. But peace never lasted long with me.The wind shifted. Clouds, heavy and low, began to roll across the sky. The sun dimmed, and in its place came something wrong, a glow like a furnace door cracked open far above. I stopped moving. The air tasted of smoke, dry and metallic. Then the first flakes began to fall.Ash.At first Veyra thought it was snow, lifting her hand up and laughing. “It’s summer, Rhok.
