Chapter 2

The grandma didn’t make it.

In 3 days, Alex organized her funeral, buried her in her hometown.

Standing in front of her tomb, Alex sighed and adjusted the dark spectacles shielding his eyes. It instantly dawned on him that his grandmother sent him away to make some soup probably because she didn’t want him to see her take her last breath.

He wondered whether it was a good judgment. He had wanted to be by her side till she took her last breathe but till then, he wasn’t sure if he could withstand the moment.

“I hope you are at peace, Grandma.” He mumbled and turned around.

He had said only a few things since she passed away. He had little conversations with the people at the funeral home and only muttered a thank you to the priest who officiated the burial rite.

Alex was about to take a step toward his black spot car which was parked on the driveway opposite the cemetery when he felt his phone vibrating in his breast pocket.

He pulled out the device and after glancing at the phone screen, he slipped the phone back and moved to his car.

The call persisted.

It was Elisa. In the past 3 days, she called Alex for dozens of times, but Alex just ignored her.

But now, since the funeral finished, he finally had time to give everything a conclusion.

“Hello!” Alex picked the phone with a cold voice.

“Where have you been? Why didn’t pick up my phone? Do you know...” Elisa’s voice was cold too, she thought Alex was just being narrow because she acted intimately with Mark.

She sighed. “Nevermind, you should thank god because Mark is fine, so he won’t sue you. Where are you now?”

Alex said calmly, “I’m in Grandma’s hometown.”

Grandma? Alex, you should know she has nothing to do with our issues right?”

Elisa’s voice changed.

When Alex mentioned grandma, she finally remembered that old lady was...in the hospital?

She was enjoying the time with Mark these days, almost forgot that the grandma was right there dying.

“You should be a mature man. She’s too old, I don’t want you to bring her into our affairs, it will only make her...”

Alex interrupted her, “Her funeral was just finished.”

Elisa was at a loss for words, she felt it was just a lie. “What...what funeral?”

“I laid her to rest a few hours ago.” Alex whispered hoarsely, he was totally disappointed in Elisa.

“Impossible, you’re lying, Alex! You can’t just announce her death so easily, I...why you didn’t tell me...” Elisa was panicked, she knew Alex would never joke about her grandmother’s death.

But she must try to find her an excuse.

Alex was silent, he just sat there, listening to Elisa’s jabber. He laughed with tears.

“Enough Elisa, stop pretending to care about her. I didn’t tell you? I told you grandma wanted to meet you, she was in the hospital. And you? What you said? Do I have to remind you?” Alex said restraining his anger.

“You were busy flirting with your ex-boyfriend! You told me to leave you two alone! Remember?” Alex said ironically.

Elisa’s body trembled, she couldn’t believe that old lady just passed away.

3 years ago, at the night when Mark left her, she was drunk and was harassed by some goons. It was Alex’s grandma who saved her from it.

She couldn’t believe it, she always claimed to be nice, kind and beautiful, a perfect girl.

But now...she missed the funeral of her savior? How ungrateful!

She was speechless, because she knew she had no excuse for it. She thought on that day Alex was lying, just to stop her from contacting Mark.

She was wrong.

Alex calmed down, he broke the silence, said coldly, “I know why you called me so many times, I’ll be back soon. Don’t worry, you’ll be free soon.”

He cut the line, fell on the seat of his car.

Elisa put the phone down at a loss, she was so guilty didn’t meet the last time of the grandma.

But...it won’t change her mind, she must leave Alex.
