The man shouted at Leo again. Leo could not speak. His mouth stayed open. He could not believe Mia was standing there with another man. It felt like a bad dream. He wished he could wake up right away.
Mia was not supposed to be here. She had told him she was going back to their room. Why was she in the mall with this stranger?
Leo and Mia stared at each other. Leo’s chest felt heavy.
“Mia… what is going on? Why are you here? Who is this man?”
Mia opened her mouth but no words came out. She never thought she would meet Leo here. He had said he was going to see a friend. Now he was standing right in front of her. She wanted to explain, but another voice cut in.
“She does not need to explain anything to you,” Claire said. Her eyes were full of anger. “Hasn’t my daughter suffered enough because of you, you useless man?”
Claire had been waiting for a day like this. She wanted Leo out of Mia’s life for good. Now the chance was here.
“This is Mr. Daniel,” Claire continued. “He is the heir of the Blake family. He wants to marry Mia and help our family get a good contract. We already agreed.”
The Blake family was a second-class family in Summerville. They had many business connections. Daniel raised his chin a little. He had worked hard for this day. It looked like he was finally getting what he wanted.
Leo could not believe what he was hearing. He had spoken to Mia just a short time ago. She never said a word about any of this. Had she been hiding it?
“Claire, I know Mia has gone through a lot because of me,” Leo said. “But she is still my wife. We are married. I worked hard for this family. I tried my best to make everyone happy.”
“Shut your mouth,” Claire snapped. “You say you worked hard? Then show me what you achieved. Real hard-working men have something to show. Where is yours? Show me, you good-for-nothing.”
Leo stayed quiet. Claire always took the small salary the Parker family paid him. She never gave him any of it. Now she stood there talking like this.
Claire kept going. “I heard you got fired today. Are you here to apply for a cleaning job? Is that how you plan to take care of Mia and make sure Lily goes to a good school like other kids?”
“No,” Leo said. “I came to buy clothes for my wife and daughter.”
Claire’s eyes narrowed. “You came to buy clothes? Do you even know how much things cost here? Look at yourself. Everything you are wearing is not even worth a hundred dollars. And you think you can shop in this place?”
She turned to the saleswoman. “Call security. This man is here to steal. That is what people like him do.”
Leo had heard enough. Claire always looked for ways to make him look small. He knew that if he paid for the clothes, she would have to stop talking. He faced the saleswoman.
“Please pack everything and tell me the total.”
The saleswoman nodded and added up the prices quickly.
“Sir, the total is three hundred thousand dollars.”
Before, that amount would have made Leo’s stomach drop. He would have needed two years of work under the Parkers to earn that much. Now it did not scare him.
Daniel gave a small smile. “Young man, since the clothes are for my future wife, let me pay. I know you cannot afford it. Leave it to someone who can.”
He looked at Leo like he was already the winner.
“Do not help him, Mr. Daniel,” Claire said. “If he wants to make a fool of himself, let him.”
Leo met Daniel’s eyes. “I can pay for my own things. I never asked for your help.”
Mia could not stand there and watch any longer.
“Leo, stop acting like you can pay,” she said. Her voice was tight. “You and I both know you cannot. Just let him pay and stop this. You are embarrassing yourself.”
Leo looked at her. His eyes turned cold. This was the same Mia he had talked to earlier that day. Now she was standing against him.
He did not care what any of them said. He knew he could pay. He pulled out the black card and held it up.
Everyone in the store went quiet. They all waited to see what would happen next.
