Chapter 8: The Breach in the Deep

With Sylvia taking over the supply logistics and tenant administration, the efficiency of Sector 99 spiked overnight.

While Sylvia established a strict inventory tracking system and drafted standardized lease agreements for future tenants, Han directed his full focus downward. Sixty days remained until the Great Mana Collapse, and Level 3 the designated War Foundry and Outer Defense Grid was still raw, untamed cavern stone.

Deep in the subterranean depths, four hundred feet below the surface, the natural ambient temperature dropped sharply. Unlike the warm geothermal veins powering Level 2, Level 3 bordered the unmapped subterranean abyss, a vast network of ancient, dark tunnels where ancient mana-beasts nested in the dark.

Han stood at the edge of the newly excavated Level 3 staging floor. Beside him, Vance held a long iron torch, its yellow flame flickering violently against the cold, damp draft blowing up from a massive natural chasm in the cavern floor.

"The thermal drills hit a natural fault line an hour ago," Vance said, his voice echoing in the vast, dark space. "We broke directly into an unmapped fissure system. The dwarf crews heard strange skittering sounds coming from the shaft down there. They refused to set the foundation anchors until we clear the area."

Han looked down into the pitch-black chasm.

DING.

His system interface flared to life, flashing a pulsing red warning box in his field of vision.

[Warning: Uncharted Subterranean Nest Detected!]

[Entity Type: Shadow-Claw Crawlers (Grade-B Swarm)]

[Estimated Hostile Count: 500+]

[Threat Assessment: High Risk of Level 3 Encroachment.]

"Shadow-Claws," Han muttered, his jaw tightening.

In his past life, he had seen these creatures strip an entire battalion of guild soldiers to the bone in minutes. They were blind, cave-dwelling beasts with razor-sharp chitinous claws, armor capable of shrugging off standard steel weapons, and an innate hunger for raw mana cores.

If this swarm breached the upper levels, it would butcher the workers and destroy the delicate geothermal conduits powering Level 2.

"Order all construction crews to fall back behind the Level 2 blast doors immediately," Han commanded quietly. "Seal the transit lifts."

Vance’s face paled. "Han, you can't face a subterranean swarm alone! Let me grab the dwarf guards"

"The guards aren't equipped for Grade-B monsters yet," Han interrupted, pulling his system interface closer. "Get the workers to safety, Vance. That’s an order."

Vance hesitated for a fraction of a second, seeing the unshakeable determination in Han’s eyes, before turning and shouting up the access ramp. "Evacuate Level 3! Move! Pull the levers!"

Within three minutes, the heavy iron lifts groaned as they hauled the last of the terrified workers up toward Level 2. The massive, four-inch-thick steel blast doors slammed shut with a heavy, reverberating THUD, sealing Han alone in the cavernous dark of Level 3.

Silence settled over the deep chamber, save for the rhythmic dripping of water and the low, sinister screeching echoing up from the chasm.

Han stood fifty feet from the gap, his eyes cool and focused as he opened his system interface.

[Construction Points Available: 12,500 CP]

[Deploying Module: Automated Runic Sentry Turrets (Grade-S Core) x 6]

[Deploying Module: High-Voltage Mana Grid Floor]

[Total Cost: 8,000 CP]

DING.

[Executing Rapid Structural Transmutation...]

The cold, uneven rock floor beneath Han’s feet instantly melted and re-solidified into smooth, interlocking plates of silver-hued mana-conductive steel. Along the perimeter of the chasm, six heavy, armored steel pedestals rose from the ground with a sharp mechanical hiss.

Heavy, triple-barreled rotary cannons materialized atop each pedestal, their runic barrels glowing with a lethal, deep-violet light as they locked onto the dark opening.

SKREEEEEEEECH!

A chorus of ear-splitting shrieks erupted from the chasm as the swarm hit the upper edge.

Dozens then hundreds of glossy black, eight-legged beasts surged out of the dark pit. Their multi-faceted red eyes gleamed in the dim light as they scrambled over one another, razor-sharp claws clicking furiously against the steel floor as they charged straight toward Han.

Han didn't flinch. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply raised his right hand and brought his fingers down in a single, decisive gesture.

"Engage."

BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM!

The six S-Grade rotary turrets fired simultaneously.

A deafening wall of sound roared through the cavern as thousands of superheated mana-bolts poured from the barrels in a solid wave of purple fire. The air turned white-hot in an instant.

The front rank of the swarm was instantly vaporized. Chitin armor shattered, limbs flew, and purple blood sizzled against the high-voltage floor grid. The floor plates crackled with fifty thousand volts of pure mana-lightning, shocking any creature that managed to leap past the initial hail of gunfire and turning them to ash in seconds.

The Shadow-Claws, driven by feral hunger, continued to pour out of the chasm, but they were charging directly into a meat grinder engineered by a God-Tier Construction System.

For ten minutes, the automated kill-zone operated with terrifying, mathematical precision. The turrets rotated smoothly on their swivels, tracking heat signatures and obliterating clusters of beasts before they could get within thirty feet of the perimeter.

When the last screech faded into the cavern air, the chasm entrance was silent.

Over five hundred Grade-B monsters had been completely eradicated.

DING.

[Subterranean Threat Neutralized!]

[Raw Beast Cores Harvested via System Reclamation: 520 Units.]

[Converting Raw Beast Cores into Construction Points...]

[Gained: 15,600 CP!]

[Current Balance: 20,100 CP!]

Han let out a low, satisfied breath as the turrets retracted into their floor housings, their hot barrels venting white steam into the air.

Not only had the defense grid passed its first real combat test with zero casualties, but the harvested cores had actually doubled his available Construction Points.

He walked over to the edge of the chasm, looking down into the dark abyss where the monsters had emerged. His Future-Value Appraisal swept over the deep fault line.

[Target Location: Subterranean Chasm - Shaft Gamma]

[Deep Resource Identified: Unrefined Mithril-Iron Vein]

[Estimated Yield: 50,000 Tons of High-Grade Defensive Alloy]

[Post-Collapse Value: Infinite (Essential for Level 4 Vault Shields)]

Han smiled, a dark, victorious glint in his eyes. The breach wasn't a setback it was a goldmine.

He brought up his system console and selected the automated excavation module, authorizing the construction of Level 3's primary facility.

[Deploying Module: Deep-Core War Foundry & Automated Alloy Smelter!]

[Deducting 10,000 CP. Construction Commencing...]

Deep within the cavern, massive automated furnaces began to rise from the bedrock, powered directly by the geothermal core above. Heavy mechanical arms snapped into place, ready to begin smelting the raw Mithril-Iron vein into impenetrable blast doors and heavy armor plates for the entire sanctuary.

The heavy steel blast doors behind him hissed open. Vance rushed out, holding a heavy crossbow, followed by a dozen trembling dwarf guards.

Vance stopped dead in his tracks, his mouth hanging open as he stared at the spotless, pristine steel floor, the massive automated foundry rising in the center of the room, and Han standing calmly near the edge of the pit without a single scratch on his vest.

"Han..." Vance squeaked, dropping his crossbow. "The... the swarm?"

"Cleared," Han said, turning around and wiping a fleck of dust from his sleeve. "And we found fifty thousand tons of Mithril-Iron down there."

He walked past the stunned guards, clapping Vance on the shoulder.

"Tell Sylvia to draft thirty more worker contracts, Vance," Han said smoothly as he headed toward the lift. "We're going to start building the heavy artillery."

We build fortresses and mine shafts, not fancy resorts.""You build the basics Vance " Han replied. "The System takes care of the rest." He brought up his master interface. "Level 1 is closed and working, Han. The places where plants grow are set up, the water cleaning units are taking underground water and the homes for people can fit a thousand people right now.. He didn't even bother looking up when the bell above the door chimed."Registry is closed for lunch in twenty minutes " Oswald drawled, his voice dry as leaves. He pulled his spectacles down his nose and peered over the counter at Han’s worn vest and scuffed boots. A low mocking chuckle rasped from the man’s throat."Sector 99? The old obsidian pit i
