"Watch your step, Mohr! Wouldn't want you kissing the ground again!" Laughter erupted as four boys stood together, sneering at the lone figure before them.
Ezra was fifteen, brown-haired, brown-eyed, and standing at almost six feet tall. He turned around to look at the boy that mocked him. "Hey Quentin! Damn you!" Ezra said as he lifted his middle finger. "You worthless piece of trash, how dare you!" Quentin shouted. With a flick of his wrist, his fingers traced the air. The wind howled, a sharp gust slamming into Ezra's chest. BOOM! Ezra flew backward, crashing onto the hard cobbled street. Pain shot through his body and a metallic taste filled his mouth. "You should be grateful to me for still letting you live. Even though we both know you're not worth it. Next time you talk back to me, I won't be so kind." Quentin said as he walked away with his friends. Their laughter faded down the street, leaving Ezra sprawled on the ground, staring at the sky, his breathing ragged. This was normal. Every. Single. Day. With a sigh, he wiped the blood from his lips and stood up. His tattered clothes clung to his bruised body as he limped toward home. This was the world of mages. People with special powers they could use however they wanted. Quentin was one of them, a wind mage. It didn't matter how old you were. As long as you could use magic, you were somebody. Ezra wasn't lucky enough to be counted as one. He had no affinity from birth. Anybody who couldn't use magic was considered a cripple and treated like one. He finally reached the slummy part of town where the less privileged rested their heads. Their house looked small from the outside, broken windows, a door barely hanging on, paint long since washed off. Walking in, Ezra caught the aroma of something delicious from the kitchen. His stomach growled. "Ezra! Is that you?" An soft voice called from the kitchen. "Yes mom." Ezra took his seat on the partly broken sofa. A woman stepped out, wiping her hands on a ragged cloth. Despite the hardships, Elise still looked breathtaking. Long brown hair, kind brown eyes, a soft warm smile. The woman looked to be in her late thirties and was beautiful in a way that felt unfair given where they lived. "How was your day honey?" Elise asked as she came over to him. "Horrible as usual." Ezra said with a hint of anger and sadness. Elise sighed and hugged him. "I'm sorry son that you have to go through all this." "I feel like it's my fault that you all have to endure this." Ezra said. "No honey, it's not your fault. It's just the way the world works." Elise said. "No!" Ezra pulled away from her embrace. "It is my fault. If I had an affinity we would be living better." "Ezra..." Elise choked up. "I just wish this was all a bad dream. I'm tired mom" A tear trickled down his face. He stood up. "And I think I know what to do." He ran into his tiny bedroom and shut the door. "Ezra! Don't do anything stupid!" Elise ran after him. Inside his room, Ezra took out the knife he kept hidden and stared at it. Every day he thought about this. Every day he stopped himself. He wasn't sure he could stop himself today. Voices came. "Do it Ezra. Do it." "You are useless to your family and yourself. It will be better to just end it." Like two devils whispering at once. He lifted the knife and stared at the blade. "Just do it and get it done with." He was almost ready. He lifted the knife higher and then a loud shout broke out from the living room. "Huh? Mom?" Ezra threw the knife down and ran out. Two men stood in front of his mother. Their faces were pale. Elise was trembling. "What's going on?" Ezra demanded, looking between them. "It's... it's your..." Elise struggled to speak, choking on tears. "What's going on mom? Tell me. Please." Ezra pleaded. "Kid, I need you to be brave." One of the men said. "Will someone just tell me what's happening?" Ezra's voice rose. "Ezra, it's your dad." Elise said, tears streaming down her face. "Dad? What happened to dad?" "Kid, your dad is dead. He died when a beast broke out at his work site. He was killed on the spot." The second man said. Ezra felt like a lightning bolt had crashed through him. His world collapsed right in front of him and he stood there, rooted, saying nothing. "I know it's hard to hear. Be brave for your mother." The first man signalled to his colleague and they left. Elise was on her knees, crying her eyes out. Ezra didn't know what to do. He turned and walked slowly out of the house. "Ezra!" Elise shouted after him. He didn't stop. His body moved and his mind raced and he didn't know where he was going until the trees swallowed him and he realized he had walked into the woods where beasts were rumored to roam. "If dad is dead, then what is the point of my existence?" He thought. "Won't it be better to go be with him wherever he is." He stopped in the middle of the woods. Hot tears streamed down his face. "Arghhhhhhhhh!" He screamed into the sky and fell to his knees, banging his fists into the hard soil. "GRRRRRRR!" A loud growl. A large wolf, hung its head low and was heading straight for him. He looked at it and smiled. "At last." Ezra stood and faced the beast, waiting. The wolf lunged. Ezra closed his eyes. He felt nothing. Then a thud hit the ground in front of him. He opened his eyes. The wolf lay dead at his feet. No wound. No sign of what had killed it. "What the?!?" He looked up. A wave of bright white light was rolling through the trees toward him. It hit him in a split second and knocked him out cold.Latest Chapter
Chapter 10: Last Strike
"Shit! What am I going to do now?" Ezra yelled as he watched the jagged shrapnel closing in fast on his position."Think! Think Ezra, think! Finally!" An idea struck him like.He immediately set to work, closing his eyes while standing perfectly still. He forced himself to ignore the whistling debris that was now dangerously close to his skin.Ezra began circulating mana rapidly throughout his body while simultaneously drawing in even more energy from the surrounding world. He pulled more and more power into himself, and in the process his physical body started to overload from the sheer pressure of the intake. That was when a sharp piercing sound echoed through the air as the shrapnel reached point-blank range.Snapping his eyes open, Ezra thrust both hands outward with a desperate roar.A violent burst of translucent energy erupted from his palms, hitting the projectiles and sending them flying away in every direction.Almost instantly Ezra collapsed onto his knees, breathing heavil
Chapter 9: Fire and Blood
The plan was fairly simple. All Ezra had to do was venture deep into the Volcano Forest, concentrate hard to cultivate and awake a fire affinity. Everything had been going smoothly until a Level 4 Magic beast with both Earth and Fire attributes appeared."How is this even possible? How did a level 4 beast find its way here and how can it actually wield two attributes? This is absurd! Why am I always stuck with the worst kind of luck?" Ezra felt like crying inwardly but the magic beast in front of him would not give him that leisure. The beast wasted no time to get in the offensive again, launching a powerful attack that sent Ezra flying. It then stood still, eyes locked on, watching as its target slowly pushed himself off the ground, clutching his stomach in pain. As if to taunt him.Now standing barely five feet away from the elemental wolf, Ezra took deep, controlled breaths, circulating his mana in an attempt to steady himself."Damn it! How am I supposed to fight such a crazy beas
Chapter 8: Confrontation
The next morning, Ezra woke up in high spirits, enjoying breakfast with his mother as they chatted at the table."I was thinking of going out to look for a job so we can have enough to eat," Elise said, her voice laced with worry.Ezra frowned. "Don't look so down, Mum. Things will change for us soon. And don't worry, you're not alone—I'll start looking for work too.""No!" Elise objected immediately. "I don't want you stressing yourself over household matters. Let me take care of them.""Mum, nothing you say will change my mind. I've already decided, and I promise, I won't do anything dangerous or exhausting," Ezra insisted firmly.Elise sighed. "Honey, I know you want to help, and I appreciate it. But there's hardly anything someone your age can do.""Yeah… because I'm useless." Ezra's voice dropped, and he abruptly stood up from the table. "I'm heading out. I'll be back late."Before Elise could stop him, he stormed out of the house.---Ezra wandered through the bustling streets,
Chapter 7: Ignition
Chapter 7: The Library EncounterEzra Mohr stepped out into the bright morning sunlight, a new fire burning in his chest.Ezra could not stop his mind from racing."Which elemental affinity will show itself first?" he wondered. After ten minutes of brisk walking, Ezra arrived at the heavy wooden doors of the town library. He took a deep breath, pushed the doors open, and stepped inside. The air inside the library smelled of aged paper, dried ink, and polished cedar. Sunlight filtered through the tall stained-glass windows, casting long beams across towering shelves.Ezra walked deeper into the back aisles where the magic manuals were kept.He skimmed his fingers along the dusty spines of the books, reading titles in quick succession. Most volumes covered standard theory. Finally, two thick tomes caught his eye.The first was titled Introduction to the Use of Fire Magic. The second was a thin, leather-bound volume titled Basic Pyromancy Incantations.Ezra pulled both books from the she
Chapter 6: The Broken Seal
"Ezra! Wake up!"A voice echoed inside Ezra's mind, snapping him back to reality."Ugh. My head," Ezra groaned, pressing a trembling palm against his forehead. A dull ache pounded behind his eyes, and his chest felt bruised. He blinked again, trying to clear the haze in his thoughts. He could have sworn someone had just yelled his name, but the bedroom was completely empty. Then, Ezra shifted his weight, and a loud, wet squelch came from beneath his back.A repulsive, rotten stench hit his nostrils, making him gag. He looked down at his body and recoiled in horror.A thick, jet-black sludge covered his skin. The foul, greasy substance had soaked through his shirt and pants, pooling on the floorboards around him. It oozed from every part of his body, mixing with cold sweat to form a disgusting coating. His tongue even tasted bitter, as if he had swallowed poison.Ezra sat frozen for seconds before realization hit him."Is this what I think it is?" Ezra whispered, his heart pounding. He
Chapter 5: First Steps
Ezra's head felt heavy."Damn that old geezer," Ezra groaned, his voice a weak rasp.Next came the sound of quiet, desperate sobbing.A soft, trembling voice broke through the thick fog in his mind."Ezra? Oh, gods! you're awake.""Mom?" Ezra whispered, his throat dry."Oh, Ezra! My sweet boy!" Elise Mohr cried out.Guilt crashed down on him like a heavy rock.Elise continued to sob against his shoulder for several minutes. Slowly, the heavy weeping turned into quiet sniffles. She finally pulled back, wiping her wet cheeks with the back of her sleeve. She looked down at him with a mix of fierce love and rising anger."Why did you go into the woods?" Elise demanded. Her voice cracked with raw pain. "Were you trying to get yourself killed, Ezra?"That was exactly the plan, Ezra thought bitterly."I'm so sorry, Mom," Ezra said softly, looking directly into her eyes. "It will never happen again."Elise let out a long, shaky breath. Fresh tears pooled in her eyes, but she blinked them back
