Chapter 4: The Flying Croissant Catastrophe

"Duck!" Calista barked, her left hand violently snatching the collar of Aether’s ruined silk robes.

"Whoa—!" Aether’s protest was cut short as she yanked him backward.

They fell in a chaotic heap, rolling behind a heavy, cast-iron park bench just as the blazing croissant flew over their heads. It hit the brick wall behind them, detonating in a shower of sticky, boiling-hot caramel and blue sparks.

"My hair!" Aether cried, clutching his head. "Tell me it didn't touch my hair! If I lose my volume, Calista, I swear to the heavens—"

"Quiet!" Calista hissed, her shoulder pinned hard against his. "Your hair is fine. Your situational awareness, however, is nonexistent."

"I was a god of aesthetics, not a shield-bearer! And may I remind you, we are currently sharing a single sleeve of a highly flammable trench coat?"

"Then get out of the coat!" Calista snapped, her silver eyes darting around the corner of the bench.

"I can't! Our hands are locked in the pocket, remember?" Aether rattled the glowing neon-pink chain. "Unless you want to do a synchronized strip-tease in the middle of a pastry-themed apocalypse, we are stuck in this thing!"

"Oh, look! More customers!" the possessed baker cackled from above. He was floating on a vortex of swirling flour and powdered sugar, his purple eyes bulging. "Have a complimentary scone, you freeloaders!"

He hurled three glowing, rock-hard pastries directly at their cover.

"We need to move," Calista said, her voice dropping into her practiced, military cadence. "On my mark, we pivot to the right. Three, two, one—go!"

"Which right?!" Aether screamed as she dragged him. "Your right is my left! We’re facing opposite directions, Calista!"

They collided immediately, their legs tangling as they stumbled out from behind the bench. The scones slammed into the iron seat, blowing it into twisted, smoking fragments of metal.

"See? This is what I’m talking about!" Aether gasped, flailing to keep his balance as Calista pulled him into a sprint. "You can't just yell 'right' and expect me to read your mind!"

"I expect you to have basic motor skills!" Calista countered, her silver rapier humming as she deflected a stray glob of explosive dough with a swift flick of her left wrist. "Can you use your magic to neutralize those projectiles?"

"Neutralize? Sure. Obliterate? No," Aether said, panting heavily. "My core is still empty, Calista! I only have trickles of residual chaos magic. The best I can do is minor transmutation."

"Then transmute them!"

"Into what?!"

"Anything that doesn't explode!" she yelled, dragging him behind a parked delivery van.

"Fine! But don't complain about the results!"

Aether squeezed his eyes shut, reached into his jacket pocket, and grabbed the rubber chicken. He couldn't channel real power, but he could redirect the lingering energy of the curse. He aimed the squeaking toy at the next incoming barrage of blazing danishes.

"Pigeon-morphosis!" Aether shouted.

SQUEEEEEAK.

A bright pink flash shot from the toy. The mid-air explosive pastries suddenly stopped glowing, shuddered, and burst into a dozen fat, incredibly confused grey pigeons. The birds fluttered wildly, cooing loudly as they flew straight into the possessed baker’s face.

"What? Get off me! You feathered rats!" the baker shrieked, swatting at the birds.

"Pigeons?!" Calista stared at Aether, her jaw slack. "You turned lethal explosives into pigeons?"

"Hey, they're self-replicating, organic crumb-disposal units! It’s highly thematic for a bakery!" Aether grinned, looking incredibly proud of himself. "And it gave us a window. Now, what’s the plan, Captain?"

"We need to subdue him, but we can't get close enough for a strike if we keep tripping over each other," Calista said, her brow furrowed in intense concentration. She looked down at the neon-pink handcuffs. "The curse. You said it requires harmony to function without feedback?"

"Yes! It’s a binding of sappy souls! It responds to physical and emotional synchronization."

"How do we achieve that?"

"We have to move to a rhythm," Aether said, a mischievous spark returning to his eyes. "A shared cadence. Like a dance. Or a children's game."

"Absolutely not," Calista said, her face turning pale. "I am a high-ranking officer of the High Court. I do not do 'children's games.'"

"Do you want to get vaporized by a flying baguette, Calista? Because he's getting those pigeons off his face, and he looks very angry."

"Gluten is the enemy of progress!" the baker roared, gathering a massive, glowing ball of purple energy between his hands. It looked like a giant, unstable sourdough boule. "Prepare to be proofed!"

"Fine!" Calista hissed, her grip on Aether’s hand tightening inside the torn pocket. "What is the cadence?"

"Just repeat after me and step on the beat," Aether said, flashing her a brilliant, ridiculous smile. "Ready? Sappy, sappy, make us happy..."

"I am going to throw myself into the sun," she whispered.

"Step! Left foot first!" Aether urged. "Sappy, sappy, make us happy..."

"Sappy... sappy... make us happy," Calista muttered, her face burning with a mix of embarrassment and sheer determination. She stepped forward. Her foot landed in perfect synchronization with his.

The pink chain between their wrists suddenly hummed, glowing with a soft, warm, and remarkably stable light. The heavy, dragging friction of the handcuffs vanished.

"It’s working!" Aether laughed, stepping in perfect harmony beside her. "Step together, light and snappy!"

"Step together, light and snappy," Calista chanted, her movements suddenly fluid, her silver rapier raised.

They moved out from behind the van not as two clunky, chained individuals, but as a single, highly coordinated unit. They glided across the cobblestones, weaving through the falling debris with effortless grace.

"Die, calorie-counters!" the baker screamed, throwing the giant sourdough bomb straight at them.

"Now, Aether!" Calista commanded.

"Slippery slide!" Aether shouted, pointing his free hand at the pavement directly beneath the floating baker.

A massive, shimmering puddle of pure, golden butter materialized on the street.

At the exact same microsecond, Calista slid beneath the incoming sourdough bomb, dragging Aether down with her in a perfectly synchronized dip. They popped back up on the other side of the projectile, their momentum carrying them directly toward the possessed mortal.

"What is this?! It’s too slippery!" the baker cried, his feet flailing on the buttered asphalt as his gravity magic wavered.

"My turn," Calista said.

Moving in perfect rhythm, she used their shared momentum to swing Aether around like a dance partner. As he spun, he provided the perfect anchor, allowing Calista to leap into the air and deliver a devastating, divine-infused kick straight to the baker’s chest.

BOOM.

The impact was clean. The purple chaos spirit was violently knocked loose from the mortal's body, dissolving into a harmless wisp of dark smoke that vanished into the afternoon air. The baker collapsed onto the buttery pavement, unconscious but breathing steadily, completely unharmed.

The giant sourdough bomb dissipated into a harmless cloud of flour, settling over the street like a light dusting of snow.

"We... did it," Calista breathed, landing lightly on her feet. She was panting, her silver hair slightly messy, but her eyes were bright.

"And we looked absolutely spectacular doing it," Aether gasped, leaning against her shoulder as he tried to catch his breath. "See? I told you pink was your color."

"Do not push your luck, Aether," she said, though she didn't immediately pull away.

Slow, deliberate clapping echoed from the shadows of a nearby alleyway.

"Bravo. Truly, a breathtaking performance," a smooth, drippingly arrogant voice called out. "I almost didn't want to interrupt. Almost."

Calista stiffened, her hand instantly going to the hilt of her rapier. "Who's there?"

A tall man stepped out from the darkness of the alley. He wore a tailored, charcoal-grey coat that screamed expensive, and his dark eyes gleamed with a cold, mocking amusement. In his right hand, he held a sleek, brass-and-silver device that hummed with a dangerous, high-pitched frequency.

"Cassian," Calista whispered, her eyes narrowing. "Cassian Jayendra."

"In the flesh, Goddess," Cassian said, bowing mockingly. "And I see you've found yourself a little playmate. Aether Valerian. The disgraced golden boy of the upper heavens. How the mighty have fallen."

"Cassian, you absolute parasite," Aether spat, his usual playful demeanor vanishing, replaced by a cold, sharp anger. "You're the one behind the dimensional tear. You released those chaos spirits."

"Guilty as charged," Cassian smiled, tapping the side of his glowing brass device. "Though, 'released' is such a harsh word. I prefer to think of them as a distraction. A way to keep the local authorities busy while I track down a much more valuable prize."

"And what prize would that be?" Calista demanded, stepping slightly in front of Aether.

"You, of course," Cassian said, his eyes locking onto the glowing pink chain connecting their wrists. "Or rather, the residual divine energy still lingering inside you both. The High Court was so eager to throw you out, Aether, they forgot to properly wipe your ledger. And Calista... well, your justice core is always so delightfully pure."

"You won't take us, Cassian," Calista said, her blade humming as she channeled her remaining energy into it. "We are officers of the—"

"Of a court that abandoned you?" Cassian laughed, raising his device. "Please. Look at yourselves. You're chained together by a children's toy. You can barely walk without singing a nursery rhyme."

"Hey! It’s a classic rhyme!" Aether protested.

"It’s over," Cassian said, his thumb hovering over a large, glowing red rune on his device. "This little toy of mine doesn't just track anomalies. It controls them."

"Calista, brace yourself," Aether warned, his eyes widening as he recognized the ancient runes on Cassian's device. "That's a gravitational attractor!"

"Too late," Cassian sneered. He pressed the button.

The brass device emitted a high-frequency shriek. Instantly, the neon-pink handcuffs around Aether and Calista's wrists began to glow with a violent, blinding violet light.

"What's happening?!" Calista gasped as her arm was violently jerked forward.

"The device is hijacking the curse's binding magic!" Aether yelled, struggling to keep his feet as an invisible, immense gravitational force began to pull them.

The pink chain snapped taut, vibrating so violently it hummed with a painful, high-pitched screech. With a sudden, powerful lurch, Aether and Calista were dragged off their feet, flying directly through the air toward the glowing, swirling vortex opening at Cassian’s feet.

"Hold on!" Calista screamed, reaching out to grab Aether's free hand as they were pulled into the blinding light.

"I'm trying!" Aether yelled back, his fingers lockin

g into hers as the world spun into absolute darkness.

Cassian’s wicked laughter was the last thing they heard before the portal slammed shut behind them.

Master Vane stood over a sputtering brass burner, his hair standing on end as though he had recently experienced a minor electrical discharge, glaring at the three intruders with rheumy, bloodshot eyes."You brought it?" Vane demanded, his voice cracking like dry kindling as he pointed a stained wooden spatula directly at Nyxara’s nose. "Do not tell me you dragged yourselves through half the lower cisterns just to ask about my rheumatism. I want the salt. The blue salt from the third dock warehouse, specifically crate seventy-four. He was leaning heavily against a towering crate marked Imported Cinnamon: Handle With Extreme Care, his left shoulder flickering erratically between solid flesh and shimmering, translucent orange dust. Only my staggering charm can bridge the diplomatic divide.""Your charm is currently leaking out of your elbow," Calista snapped, her fingers tightening around his good arm with a grip that threatened to bruise. Her silver divinity hummed just beneath her skin, a low, steady thrum of warmth trying to anchor his dissolving form against the damp chill of the night. "You are staying in the shadows, Aether. She simply planted the heel of her boot against the warped timber, shoved hard, and let the door bang open against the interior wall with a sound like a small cannon shot. A cloud of grey dust immediately billowed out into the damp corridor, accompanied by an overpowering olfactory assault that made Calista gag instantly. It smelled like scorched vinegar, over-steeped chamomile, sulfur, and something that strongly resembled a burnt woolen sock."Close that door, you illiterate mountain goat!" a voice screeched from the gloomy depths of the room. "Do you think I run a public thoroughfare for draft animals and vagrants? The draughts ruin the condensation coils!"A diminutive, incredibly ancient man emerged

The air here tasted of stagnant bilge water, sulfur, and unwashed desperation. "Though I do feel like my current translucent aesthetic really brings out the swamp gas."Calista kept her right hand locked tightly around his good wrist, her fingers white-knuckled and aching from the continuous strain. "The Regulators outside are using hounds this hour. If your luminous friend here decides to sneeze another cloud of glitter, we’re all hanging from the iron spikes by midnight.""It wasn’t a sneeze," Aether whispered, though his voice sounded thin, like wind whistling through a cracked pipe.
