Kai had barely finished his last sarcastic remark when Reginald did something no one—least of all Kai—expected.

He ran toward him.

Not in anger. Not fists swinging.

No.

The man dropped all that pride he used to wear like a cheap cologne and grabbed Kai’s hand like a drowning man clutching driftwood.

“Kai,” Reginald said breathlessly. “Please, I’m sorry.”

Kai blinked.

Hard.

Reginald? Apologizing?

“Forgive me,” Reginald continued, his voice trembling like his pride had packed its bags and left him an hour ago. “For the insults. For mocking you. For stealing your… your woman.”

Kai tilted his head slowly, looking down at the man holding his wrist like it was a relic. “I must’ve hit my head harder than I thought earlier,” he muttered. “Or is this your ghost?”

Reginald sniffed, visibly panicked. “I mean it, man. Everything. I take it back. All of it. I was blind. I was stupid. I was arrogant—”

“Still are,” Kai cut in flatly as he watched Reginald fumble with his emotions like a man suddenly

Kai barely got the words out before Zora suddenly sat up like someone had just slapped her with a frying pan.“Ah! That’s true! I’ve been meaning to talk about that your shiny little eyeball situation and it's important!”She jabbed a finger at him like he was caught red-handed.Kai blinked. “You... forgot to tell me something important?”“Yes,” she said without remorse, “and it’s all your fault.”He stared at her in stunned silence. “How... how is it my fault you forgot something?”She squinted at him like it was obvious. “You distracted me. With your questions and your stupid soup face and your constant breathing.”Kai’s mouth parted. “...My breathing?”Zora waved dismissively. “It throws me off balance. Anyway, listen, Eyeball Boy, this is serious.”He was too confused to argue the nickname. She sat properly now, legs crossed, arms folded, face full big-sister energy. “That Heavenly Eye of yours? Yeah. It’s cool. It’s powerful. It’s shiny. But it’s not a toy.”Kai stayed quiet and

Kai sighed, eyes still fixed on Zora. She was deep in her plate again, ripping through meat like a predator at a victory feast, there was no hesitation, no restraint, just reckless, greasy satisfaction on full display. He didn’t doubt anything she’d said, her explanation had been chaotic, sure, but accurate. Still… something itched at the back of his mind.Who exactly was she?Her knowledge wasn’t basic, it was layered, lived-in, the way she talked about high-level beasts, dense energy, and cultivation limits, it was too detailed to be casual and yet, she wasn’t even supposed to be stronger than him.So why could she eat that much? Why wasn’t it affecting her?His gaze lingered on her for a moment longer, lips slightly parted like he wanted to ask again but he didn’t. He already knew how it would go, she’d dismiss it with another joke, another insult, another ridiculous nickname. So instead… he turned to his bowl.Kai lifted the soup to his lips and downed the rest in one slow, steady

Kai shifted in his seat, eyes still on the half-eaten soup bowl like it might attack him. “Alright then... Explain it better. The beast. The energy. This whole blowing-up nonsense. I want to understand.”Zora paused mid-bite, fork hovering midair. She looked up slowly, squinting at him like he’d just requested calculus at midnight.“You seriously want a lesson now?” she asked. “After I just saved your intestines from becoming air freshener, wasn't the explanation I gave okay?”Kai didn't blink. “Yes.”For a moment, it looked like she might throw her fork at him. But then, for some unknown reason...pity, amusement, boredom, she sighed and set her plate aside.“Fine,” she muttered. “Scoot over, big bro, it's story time.”Kai didn’t move. She ignored that and continued anyway. “You see that beast you fought earlier?” she began, hands gesturing like a drama teacher prepping for stage. “As crazy as it sounds, that oversized forest turd was cultivating.”Kai frowned. “Beasts can do that?”“

As they emerged from the dense forest, silence settled between them, only the crunch of leaves underfoot and Zora’s occasional dramatic sigh filled the air. But Kai, ever the curious type, broke the silence because something had been bothering him.“How did you know I wasn’t using my full strength back there?”Zora didn’t even pause. She shot him a look over her shoulder, smirking. “Please. That beast was barely a warm-up. You were dragging your feet like a grandma with arthritis. And don’t even get me started on your stance, your punches looked like a toddler swatting at air.”Kai blinked, unimpressed. “That’s a bit dramatic.”She threw her hands up. “No, what’s dramatic is the way you kept hopping around like some unbothered anime side character. Sloppy footwork, lazy dodges... I was honestly embarrassed watching you. I was this close to pretending I didn’t know you.”Kai exhaled through his nose and looked away, choosing peace over pettiness. “Noted.”“Good,” she replied sweetly, f

  • 153: “Congratulations? For Not Dying?”

Kai watched the beast kicking up dirt and leaves in its final, twitching breath. The echo of the impact still rang through the trees when Zora dropped from her perch in the tree like a meteor. She landed hard, so hard the earth cracked beneath her feet, forming a shallow crater with her boots in the center like a damn superhero landing.Without even glancing at Kai, she dashed toward the dead creature, eyes gleaming like she’d just found a pile of treasure. Her lips curled in delight as she crouched beside the body, licking them with disturbing enthusiasm, as if she’d been starving for a beast buffet.Kai stood there, still trying to breathe, still stunned. His chest heaved. His hands trembled slightly. Sweat dripped down the side of his face. He’d just unleashed a technique so violent it had shocked him and it had actually worked. Better than he ever imagined. Still, he could feel the intense pull on his energy. His insides felt like chewed wire and battery acid.He narrowed his eyes

  • 152: Let It Flow

The beast struck with a roar that shook the trees. Its claws carved deep trenches in the ground, and its muscles moved like nothing Kai had ever seen before. Kai dodged to the side, barely missing a blow that would’ve shattered his ribs. His fists tightened. His body moved. But it wasn’t enough.Every hit he landed barely left a mark. Every strike the beast threw felt like it could split the earth. He ducked, twisted, launched a kick, nothing worked. Its raw speed and brute force were terrifying. Even his Heavenly Eye, once his trump card, flickered uselessly against the overwhelming pressure. He was losing. And fast.Then...“Are you freaking kidding me right now?!” Zora’s voice exploded from somewhere above.Kai glanced up just in time to see her crouched on a high tree branch, fists clenched and eyes wild with disbelief. She looked like someone who’d just watched a toddler try to punch a mountain.“Why are you holding back, dumbass?!” she snapped.Kai blinked. “What?”An object buz
