Kai finally turned, slowly, with the kind of deliberate calm that felt heavier than anger. His gaze swept over the couple who were still laughing—like they were at some exclusive private joke, where he was the punchline.

He slid one hand into his pocket and tilted his head slightly. “Tell me something,” he asked, voice smooth. “Do either of you even know how much that car costs?”

The man didn’t flinch. If anything, he scoffed louder. “Tch. What does it matter?” he said, puffing his chest like a pigeon. “This is a car showroom, not an art gallery. That junk heap probably goes for five million at most.”

The sales girl's eyes went wide with panic. “Sir, that’s not—”

“Enough,” the man snapped, holding up his palm without looking at her. “Don’t bother. I know what I’m talking about. You just do your job and hand me the keys, yeah? Save your breath.”

The girl looked helplessly at Kai, uncertain whether she should argue or comply.

Kai let out a low chuckle, shaking his head as if he’d just w

Hearing Zora’s words, Kai’s brow furrowed deeply, his lips parted as he tried to comprehend what she just said.“You want me to open the real Third Eye?” he asked, voice low, still hoarse from screaming earlier. “How the hell am I supposed to do that?”Zora didn’t answer him immediately, she simply raised her chin and pointed at the scroll lying open on the floor, its old surface fluttering slightly from the energy still lingering in the room.“The scroll,” she said flatly. “You already have everything you need.”Kai followed her finger, then crouched and picked up the parchment, the paper still felt warm in his hand, humming faintly, almost as if it were alive, he held it in both hands, staring down at the lines of text now glowing faintly under his golden eyes.He blinked in surprise. This time, the words weren’t too harsh, his eyes didn’t sting or throb, there was no pain at all, just clarity, perfect, overwhelming clarity.“It’s working…” he murmured, eyes scanning every brushstro

  • 162: The Pain of Awakening

Kai’s scream tore through the room, raw, wild and animalistic as the blade twisted mercilessly inside his eye, and a sickening crack followed as blood gushed down the right side of his face it soaked his neck, stained his clothes, and dripped in heavy, red splats onto the floor.Zora didn’t flinch at his scream, her hand still gripped the dagger buried in his eye, wrist firm and cold like she was tightening a screw, not skewering someone's soul and then pulled it out and dropped it. “Activate your cultivation technique,” she said coolly, like this wasn’t the most brutal thing she’d ever done. “Now, focus the energy directly into your eye unless you wanna keep crying like a newborn.”Kai’s mind was foggy, pain clouded every thought, every breath, his mouth opened, and all that escaped was another broken scream, hoarse and guttural, but her words pushed through the haze of pain.Through clenched teeth and clenched fists, Kai tried, he summoned his inner energy, the core flow within hi

Kai stood there in silence as he watched Zora muttering shit he could not even understand. Her words were harsh, careless, even but they made sense and that was the problem.Thane didn’t know where Abigail had gone missing. He didn’t have a location, a clue, or even a working lead. And Kai’s sources hadn’t uncovered anything yet either, if he ran out now, burning energy and time in blind panic, what exactly was he going to accomplish?Worse... what if she was found… while he was wandering miles away from the right place? He clenched his fists, a bitter taste in his mouth.Zora was annoying, loud, always eating but unpredictable as she was, she might actually know something or have a way to help later, she always did.So, with a heavy sigh, Kai turned around and walked back to his seat and sat down slowly, shoulders tight. He didn’t say anything, just closed his eyes and tried to focus, trying to push himself into a state of cultivation. But the air between them was cold, Zora didn’t

The moment Thane's words hit his ear, Kai’s entire body jerked like he’d been shocked. He shot up from his seat, legs slamming against the table with enough force to nearly flip it over. Plates clattered, soup sloshed, and meat almost flew across the room.Zora didn’t even blink. With a flick of her wrist, she caught two falling bowls mid-air, spun a plate back into place with her elbow, and tilted her head lazily toward him, eye roll fully loaded.“Can you not cause earthquakes while I’m still digesting?” she muttered. But Kai didn’t respond. He gripped the phone tighter, voice sharp and low. “Thane. What happened?”Thane’s voice came steady, but Kai could hear the strain underneath.“She’s missing, young master. And I don’t mean late-for-a-meeting missing, I mean gone.”Kai’s eyes narrowed. “Explain.”Thane took a breath, and then the words came, clean and precise. “Abigail and I have been coordinating closely over the last few days, tying up some new development contracts you appr

Five hours later, Kai finally staggered out of the cave. His clothes were shredded, barely hanging off his frame, blood clung to his arms, streaked across his chest, and trickled down the side of his face, some of it was his, most of it wasn’t.His breathing came in rough, uneven bursts, and with every step he took, his knees threatened to buckle. The ground beneath him felt foreign, like he wasn’t walking on earth but on the edge of consciousness. His body was covered in bruises, bite marks, claw trails, deep gashes lined his ribs and shoulders, even with his healing ability, it was slow, slower than before, the kind of injuries that left a lingering sting, even after the flesh closed.Zora, sitting cross-legged on a rock nearby like she’d been on a picnic this whole time, looked up when she heard him.And burst out laughing.“Well, damn,” she grinned. “You actually made it out. Wasn’t betting on that.”Kai glared at her like he wanted to snap her neck with his eyes. She stood lazily

The next day came as fast as the last one disappeared.Kai wasn’t even sure he’d slept for more than four hours when Zora barged into his room, pulled off his blanket, and smacked him with a towel like she was waking up a lazy servant.“Forest time, Sleeping Beauty, let’s go.”He didn’t argue, he just sighed....Again.By mid-morning, they were already back in the forest, weaving through familiar trees and shattered branches until they reached… the exact same place he had fought the beast yesterday. Kai stopped, looked around, then stared at Zora.“We’re back here? Seriously?”Zora smiled, too cheerfully. “Oh yeah, same place, same air, same residual beast blood in the grass. Beautiful, right?”Kai stared at her, unimpressed. “You dragged me out here just to relive yesterday’s trauma?”“Don’t be dramatic,” she said, already walking forward. “We’re going deeper today, trust me, things get very interesting from here.”Kai muttered under his breath, “Please let me survive this shit.”Zor
