“Mother…” Abel called slowly, sitting right beside the bed.
He’d stayed at the hospital all night long. At 6 a.m., having seen how she rested peacefully all night long, the doctor allowed him into the room.
“Abel.” Maryjane groaned painfully.
“You are here?” she asked.
“Ah!” She leaned up, wanting to sit up.
“The doctor said you shouldn’t.” He gently placed a hand on her shoulder, stopping her from sitting properly.
“He said you need a week’s rest before the cut heals properly. For now, it’s not advisable to change positions.”
Maryjane nodded gently.
She remembered it, what brought her to the hospital.
Five years ago, she began to battle with an aortic aneurysm. The first two years of it, she didn’t know. The sickness had crept into her silently. The symptoms were mild and nonspecific until it became fatal and she was rushed to the hospital.
Three years down the line, she was now in critical condition. Her blood pressure was collapsing, her organs were beginning to fail, and she was on life support. Without the emergency surgery, she wouldn’t survive.
Abel held her hand gently, a smile widening on his face.
“I’m so glad you are fine now, Mother.”
Maryjane smiled but soon shrunk her face.
“Where is Adora?” she asked.
Five years ago, when Abel and Adora married, she had thought Abel would be the happiest man alive. She had thought even if she was no longer alive, Abel had already found someone who was a wife and a mother at the same time.
She never knew Adora was a bully who liked to show her might over Abel.
“Huh!” Abel stammered.
“She left some hour ago. She needed to change.” He lied.
He didn’t want her to nurture the gravity of her mistake instead of focusing on healing.
Six years ago, Maryjane and Marvin had contacted and met, getting each other’s contact from the document their fathers had left for each of them before they passed.
Over 50 years ago, Maryjane’s father and Marvin’s father had been friends who couldn’t do without seeing each other.
They started a company together and were doing well until one became greedy and killed the other.
Nevertheless, he felt the need to honor their promise to each other for their grandchildren to get married to each other.
Hence, they left the family name and the contact in their will, asking their children to only open it when they were of age.
“Okay. How much was the bill?” Maryjane asked, hearing Abel’s excuse for Adora’s absence.
“You shouldn’t have to worry about that.” Abel smiled.
“Only know that you are one lucky woman, Mother. Our prayers have been answered and now, we are in our best phase—.”
“Time’s up, Mr. Kane. You should let her rest now.” A nurse walked into the room, interrupting him.
Abel nodded. He understood why the hospital had to be strict.
He leaned to her face and kissed her on the forehead.
“I will be right back.” He said. Then stepped out of the room.

Abel stood outside the hospital building, his eyes darting to his old model car in the parking lot.
He smiled.
When he parked that car there, his heart was heavy. He’d been crying, thinking of how his mother would survive, thinking of how he would get the money for the surgery. But now, he walked out of the hospital a changed man.
Right now, he was the richest in the country. Right now, his story was soon going to start inspiring many in the city.
He approached the car and stepped in.
There was only one thing left to finalise, the best thing that had ever happened to him in his life.
“To go to the company and accept his new role as the chairman.”
Back at the Clement Family mansion, Adora lay in bed staring at the ceiling. Her breath was fast like a furious mistress who wanted to make the life of her servant more miserable.
She dialed Abel’s phone again.
“The number you are trying to reach is kindly switched off. Please try again later.” The robotic feminine voice sounded in her ear again.
She had been trying to reach him since last night. She wanted her nails done, and he was not there to polish it for her. That was a crime. And he must punish him for that.
However, he’d not come home since last night.
She punched the face of her screen and opened her iMessage.
“Tyler.” She hit the name on the screen.
“Where are you?” she texted.
“Home? Why?” Tyler replied.
“I’m coming over. Don’t go anywhere.”

Abel stretched his hand toward Adriano for a shake.Adriano pulled out his hand, received it and bowed slightly, showing respect.Abel knew it quite well. Before, he used to be poor, but now, he was a man of value. A man this company saw as worthy enough that they easily credited him with billions of dollars. There was no way he would still continue to behave like he used to when he was poor.“Thank you for coming. Please come with me.” Adriano gestured toward the elevator.Abel nodded. He stepped behind him, letting him lead the way.On the other hand, the junior executive, the secretary, and the security guard stood trembling. They knew it. They didn’t need anyone to tell them. They were done for.“Why didn’t you just check the appointment and see that he was indeed contacted instead of getting me into trouble?” The junior manager bellowed.“How was I supposed to check? “What?” the junior executive asked.“What are you gonna do, huh? Beat me?” He poked his finger on Abel’s chest and began to hit him in the chest.Suddenly, he grabbed his shirt and pulled him closer. The security smirked as soon as he said that. He knew it or so he thought. A man like Abel could never possibly be able to provide the email. With this viable reason, he would have the right to embarrass him as much as he wants.Quickly, without allowing Abel to pull his phone from his pocket, he shoved his hand, grabbing his trouser like a criminal.“What’s going on?” Abel asked, surprised at this sudden rude behaviour.“You are one fucking liar and a piece of shit.
