“Where the fuck are you?!”
“I’m starving, you bastard!!”
“Come home right away or I’ll report you to my dad?!”
Abel read every message that popped up on his phone screen. He furrowed his brows.
His hands were steady, but his heart was still heavy.
He sat in the waiting room, his eyes looking up at intervals toward the surgical room. Everything that concerned him right now was seeing the doctor come through the hallway and tell him his mother’s surgery was successful.
“I will come whenever I am ready to.” He punched his phone screen and hit his hand on the send button.

On the other side of the city, Adora’s jaw dropped.
“This bastard. He is snubbing me now because I won’t lend him the money?!”
She scoffed.
Instantly, she breathed heavily. She fumbled with her hands and dug into the grilled fillet mignon right in front of her.
Three hours ago, she’d ordered her private chefs to cook since Abel was not around to do it.
Nevertheless, she’d always wanted Abel to do her cooking. Not because she loved his cooking more, but because she always loved to show him that she was the boss.
“Father! He ignored me!!! What are you going to do about that?” She punched through her phone screen, breathing heavily and hitting the send button.

Abel tapped his feet on the ground, his heart pounding. He remembered it.
Seven years ago, on the day of his wedding, his mother had blessed him with prayers. She’d prayed for him to have a long life and to be wealthy, not because he was marrying into a wealthy family, but because he was a man of vision, intellect, and determination.
“Get well soon, Mother. I promise to take you around the world with me,” he murmured, his heart beating heavily.
He knew it.
The prayers of his mother had finally come to pass. He was now a billionaire, and it was about time he took care of his mother properly.
TRING
His phone rang suddenly, jolting him out of his thoughts.
He looked at his phone screen.
“Mr. Clement?” he murmured.
“Why is he calling me?” he asked himself.
Mr. Clement, Adora’s father, never called Abel. He always believed that Abel was a man who was not befitting enough to answer direct calls from a person like him. But now, because his daughter had reported him to him, how dare him not go home and prepare food for his daughter? Is he insane?
Abel furrowed his eyes. He tapped on the answer button casually.
“Hello, Mr. Clement.”
“Are you nuts? How dare you address me as though we are colleagues?” Clement exclaimed furiously on the phone.
“Have you no manners? I am the Chairman of The Clement Group and Companies. Greet me properly!”
Twenty five years ago, Marvin Clement became the Chairman of the family business. Whenever Adora called Abel, Abel always scurried to the phone. And do whatever she needed him to do for her.
Marvin expected the same behaviour to him. Abel was supposed to greet him as though he were a god. But then, he only said Hello?
“Is your mother’s life no longer important to you?” he asked nonchalantly.
“She benefits from the medical support we pay the hospital. If you do not leave wherever you are right away and return home and be the dog you truly are to my lovely daughter, I will make sure she stops paying those medical bills. You hear me?”
“Apologies if I stepped on your wrong foot, Mr. Clement,” Abel said calmly.
He was now easily the richest man right now. Why should he continue to be a dog and a useless son-in-law to the Clement family?
“I sincerely appreciate your support for my mother’s medical bill for all these years. However, Adora and the entire family should stop paying for it now. And about leaving where I am, no. I cannot do that. I will return home when I am ready to.”
He hung up.
“Hello!”
“Hello!” Clement sounded on the phone, hearing the call had ended but didn’t want to believe Abel could do that.
Three seconds later,
“He fucking hung up on me?” he barked.
“Insolent bastard! I will teach him a lesson!” He clenched his fist.
—
Back at the hospital, Abel sank his fingers into each other. His feet tapped on the floor continuously.
Earlier, when Clement called him and after he hung up, he turned off his phone. He didn’t want to be disturbed by anyone anymore. Everything that concerned him was his mother’s health.
Three hours later, he heard footsteps coming through the hospital hallway.
Quickly, he looked up. Seeing that it was the doctor, he rose to his feet immediately.
He walked to meet him on the way.
“How is she, Doctor?” he asked.
The doctor smiled.
“Congratulations, Mr. Kane. The surgery was successful!”
“Really?” Abel widened his cheeks in a smile.
“Can I go see her now?” he asked.
Without waiting for an answer, he already took a step forward, but the doctor blocked him with a hand pressed to his chest.
“She needs to rest for now, Mr. Kane.” He said gently.
“But you can watch her through the glass. By tomorrow, she should be awake.”
“Congratulations once again.” The doctor stepped away.
Without waiting, Abel walked to the glass panel and watched his mother sleeping peacefully on the hospital bed.
He smiled again. He moved his eyes over the machines.
The beeping was slow and normal. The figures and patterns were all green.
He nodded.
“Thank you for coming back to me, Mother,” he murmured, relieved.

Abel stretched his hand toward Adriano for a shake.Adriano pulled out his hand, received it and bowed slightly, showing respect.Abel knew it quite well. Before, he used to be poor, but now, he was a man of value. The security smirked as soon as he said that. He knew it or so he thought.
