LYON POV
"Did you really dump the founder of Blackwood Medical Group for a disgraced playboy whose father just got fired?"
Kelly slammed her back against the glass doors of the university library, her hands trembling as five news reporters pushed micro-recorders directly into her face. The bright LED camera lights blinded her, capturing every bead of panic-sweat breaking across her forehead.
"I didn't! I didn't dump him!" Kelly yelled, her voice cracking into a shrill, desperate pitch. "Lyon and I are just having a temporary misunderstanding! He loves me! He paid for my entire tuition for two years! We are still together!"
"Then why did you post a video last week laughing at his wheelchair while holding hands with Oscar?" a reporter shouted over the crowd. "And why did Blackwood Security file a formal restraining order against you three hours ago?"
Kelly froze, her mouth hanging open in complete horror.
Camera flashes erupted instantly around her. Within forty-five seconds, the video clip of her contradictory, frantic rambling crossed two million views on the regional business streaming platform. Down the street inside a luxury sports car, Oscar’s father watched the live stream on his phone, picked up his mic, and issued an immediate public statement disowning his son and revoking his credit cards permanently.
Inside the grand dining hall of the Darlington estate, the atmosphere was thick with suffocating tension.
Dean Darlington sat at the head of the long oak table, staring at the front page of the National Financial Review. The lead headline read: Who Is L. Blackwood? The Wheelchair Genius Redefining Global Medicine. Beneath the text was a high-resolution photograph taken from the side. Although the face was shadowed, the distinctive custom titanium frame of Lyon's wheelchair was completely unmistakable.
"Explain this to me," Dean said. His voice was low, shaking with an underlying rage that made the crystal wine glasses on the table vibrate. "The entire business sector is mocking us. They are saying we threw out a medical titan to embrace a fraud."
Nathaniel Darlington slammed his fork onto his porcelain plate with a harsh, metallic clang. The suave, polite mask he had worn for five years vanished, replaced by an ugly, contemptuous sneer.
"Shut up about that cripple, Dean!" Nathaniel snarled, leaning over the table. "I am sick and tired of hearing his name in this house! You think he's a genius? He's a broken freak who got lucky with a few patents! You need me to secure the regional lines, so stop whining about your little debt problem!"
Esther Darlington gasped, pulling her hand back from Nathaniel as if she had been burned. "Nathaniel... how can you speak to your father like that? You have never raised your voice in this house!"
"Father?" Nathaniel laughed coldly, tossing his linen napkin directly into Esther's soup bowl. "Do you really think I care about your pathetic little family? You people are stupid, arrogant fools who couldn't even see that your darling 'heir' was bleeding you dry from the inside out!"
Connie and Lydia shrank back into their chairs, staring at Nathaniel in complete shock and terror.
Unbeknownst to anyone in the room, a small silver pin attached to the antique chandelier above the dining table blinked with a microscopic red light. Inside a surveillance vehicle parked two miles away, Mandolin sat in front of three high-definition monitors, recording every single second of Nathaniel's outburst in crystal-clear audio and video.
Meanwhile, inside the glass-walled executive suite of Blackwood Corporate Tower, Lyon sat in his wheelchair before a massive terminal display. His lean fingers moved across the mechanical keyboard with practiced, rhythmic speed, executing a series of complex financial acquisitions.
"The Darlington Manufacturing Plant One is their oldest asset," Lancelot reported, standing beside the desk with a thick leather file. "It holds forty percent of their remaining physical collateral. The mortgage note was held by First Regional Bank."
"Was," Lyon said softly, his voice devoid of any warmth. "I bought the underlying debt note fifteen minutes ago through Apex Capital."
"The board of directors just received the automated foreclosure notice," Lancelot added. "They have twenty-four hours to produce eighty million dollars in cash, or we take physical possession of the facility tomorrow morning."
"They cannot raise eighty million," Lyon stated plainly, his eyes reflecting the blue light of the falling stock tickers. "Their accounts are frozen. Their allies have abandoned them. They have nothing left to leverage."
An hour later, Lyon sat alone on the sweeping open-air balcony of his penthouse suite, high above the glowing grid of the city night. The cold wind blew through his dark hair, but his posture remained rigid and unwavering in his wheelchair. On the small glass table beside him sat a single glass of water, untouched and still.
Mandolin stepped quietly onto the balcony, his leather shoes clicking softly against the stone tiles before coming to a stop three paces behind the chair.
"The Darlington board is in full panic, Young Master," Mandolin said, bowing his head respectfully. "Dean has called an emergency session for midnight. He is begging every bank in the province for an extension, but no one will take his calls."
Lyon did not look back. He kept his gaze fixed on the distant lights of the Darlington Corporate Tower, watching as the lights in the upper floors flickered and died one by one under the city's automated power grid management.
"Let them feel the floor disappearing," Lyon said. His tone was as cold and unrelenting as ice. "Then we show them who actually owns the ground."
Mandolin reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy, sealed manila document bearing the red wax seal of the Provincial High Court.
"Young Master," Mandolin said softly, holding out the document. "The court enforcement order has been signed. But something unexpected was attached to the filing from the state forensics laboratory."
Lyon reached out and took the document, breaking the wax seal with a quick flick of his thumb. He pulled out the single sheet of official paper and read the bold text stamped across the bottom margin.
His calm, expressionless face did not change, but his fingers tightened slightly on the paper as he read the written notice aloud:
"The court-ordered audit of the Darlington family trust has uncovered an undisclosed safety deposit box registered in your late mother's name. It contains a signed confession detailing the exact mechanical sabotage that severed your spinal cord fifteen years ago, signed by Dean Darlington."
