The morning air was still cool when Yu Bin left her room in haste, her heart caught between duty and instinct. The palace walls, once comforting, now felt too narrow to contain her restlessness. Ever since the bond between her and Xian Chen had been broken, something inside her ached—an emptiness her stubborn pride couldn’t name. She had run to him. Not as a princess. Not as a disciple. But simply as Yu Bin—someone whose heart had grown tied to another, in ways she hadn’t planned.

Now, sitting in her master’s home, caught between the sharp stare of Bao Fang and the quiet presence of Xian Chen, Yu Bin tried to act as if everything was fine. But the words slipped out before she could stop them.

"I'm fine, thanks. And you? How are you?" she said casually, but Bao Fang’s knowing smirk and the intensity of her gaze made Yu Bin shift awkwardly.

"You almost killed me. Sometimes I even wonder... Master, are you trying to kill me?" she blurted out, laughing nervously, her tone caught between jest and hidden fear.

Those words struck something in Bao Fang and Xian Chen. Their faces, once light with humor, turned serious. The shift in atmosphere was immediate—and suffocating. Yu Bin’s heart dropped.

"Wait, Master, don't get me wrong. I was joking! Brother Xian, I was joking—I don't really believe that. I trust my master. It’s not her fault I’m so easily scared. I’m sorry," she said hurriedly, the words tumbling from her lips as her eyes searched for reassurance.

Seeing her unease, both Bao Fang and Xian Chen suddenly burst into laughter.

"Really? I thought Master wanted to kill my little sister," Xian Chen teased, chuckling warmly.

Yu Bin blinked in surprise. It was only the second time she’d seen Xian Chen laugh like that—so freely, without guardedness. Her heart softened. He looks so different when he laughs, she thought. As if some heavy armor cracks away and he finally breathes.

“Yu Bin,” Bao Fang’s tone shifted gently. “Do your parents know where you are?”

There was a pause.

Her question was fair. Yu Bin looked down at herself—disheveled hair, rumpled pajamas, no shoes, no coat. She hadn’t even taken the time to bathe. The worry on her master’s face wasn’t unwarranted.

“Well…” she trailed off.

“Yu Bin.” Bao Fang’s voice was firmer.

“They don’t. Not really,” Yu Bin admitted with a sheepish smile.

“Let’s go,” Bao Fang sighed. “Before your father accuses me of kidnapping his daughter. And stop smiling like that. It won’t save you from your mother’s wrath either.”

Xian Chen made a move to follow, but Bao Fang held up a hand.

“You stay here. You’re not well enough to travel.”

Yu Bin nodded in agreement, meeting Xian Chen’s gaze. “Please rest, Brother Xian. Listen to Master.”

His lips pressed into a reluctant smile. “Alright, alright. I’ll behave.”

Outside, the morning air was crisp. Yu Bin wrapped her arms around Bao Fang’s waist as her master summoned her sword. With one fluid motion, they rose into the sky.

“Yu Bin,” Bao Fang said quietly as they soared, “from now on, stay in front of me. Let me see you. Always remain by my side.”

Yu Bin’s arms tightened slightly around her. “Master… is something wrong?”

“No. Not exactly,” Bao Fang replied, exhaling deeply. “I just want to help you grow. I want to see you rise and become the queen you're meant to be.”

Yu Bin didn’t press further. She could feel it—something was weighing on her master’s heart. But she had learned patience. Like Xian Chen, her master carried her burdens in silence. And like before, Yu Bin chose to wait until they were ready to share.

“I promise I’ll listen to everything you say,” Yu Bin whispered.

Bao Fang smiled faintly. “Do you have a sword yet?”

Yu Bin shook her head. “No. Father brought me many, but none responded to me. I couldn’t form a bond with any of them.”

“Then after we’ve reassured your parents, I’ll take you somewhere special. Somewhere your sword may find you.”

Yu Bin gave her a skeptical glance. “You’re not tricking me again into fighting on a battlefield, are you?”

Bao Fang laughed. “Next time, yes. But not today. Today, I keep my promise.”

They approached the castle, but even from above, Yu Bin sensed something was wrong. The palace was in chaos—guards shouting, servants running.

The moment her feet touched the ground, her father stormed out like a thundercloud.

“You devil! Come here! I’ll wring your neck myself!” he roared.

Yu Bin shrieked and darted behind Bao Fang. “Master! Save me!”

“I warned you,” Bao Fang muttered.

“Your Highness,” she said quickly, stepping forward. “Please let me explain.”

The king halted, barely restraining his fury.

“Speak,” he said tersely.

“Yu Bin was concerned for Xian Chen, who was gravely injured while protecting her. In her panic, she rushed to check on him before dawn. It was my decision to allow her to stay. Please forgive her just this once. Right, Yu Bin?”

Yu Bin poked her head out. “Yes, Father. I promise it won’t happen again—unless Master or Brother Xian is in danger. Then... maybe I’ll rush out again.”

The king’s face flushed with renewed anger. “You—what did you just say?!”

“If someone I love is in danger, I can’t just wait,” she said defiantly. “You’d do the same for Mother.”

“That’s different!”

“It’s not. Love is love, Father. That never changes.”

“You—!” His voice rose sharply.

“Enough!” the queen interjected. “You’re both acting like children. Yu Bin, apologize to your father.”

Yu Bin glanced at Bao Fang, who nodded gently. “Be the daughter your parents are proud of.”

Yu Bin bowed her head. “I’m sorry, Father. Mother. I’ll do better. I don’t want to worry you again.”

The king’s eyes softened. “Have you eaten?”

“No…”

“Neither have we,” he said, sighing. “Let’s all eat together.”

Yu Bin nodded but kept her eyes low. She didn’t expect what came next.

“Look at me,” her father said softly.

She raised her eyes.

He opened his arms. “Come here.”

Tears slipped from her eyes as she stepped forward and embraced him, burying her face into his chest.

“I’m sorry, Dad,” she whispered.

He held her tightly. “Just don’t scare me like that again. You’re all I have.”

In that moment, Yu Bin felt the warmth of something she thought she might have lost—the deep, unshakable love of a parent. And it filled her with a quiet strength.

"Old man, Do you think I'm a bad person ?" Ming Fang asked, somehow disturbed by Yu Bin's and Xian Chen's reactions a few hours ago. "Why do you think so?" The old man asked, turning around and staying down on the chair beside Ming Fang. They were reaching their home not so long ago and he was preparing some food for them but Ming Fang's troubled voice made him stop whatever he was doing and stayed down beside her.
